Apr 4, 2012
It cant be more simple. However I have tried a lot of examples and none of them have been working.
I have a very simple Excel file. I want to post these data in a gridview, Column A, B and C all placed in the Sheet1 and the file name is Book1.xls.

I have a client that provides a .xls file on their site that we have no control over that we download the file and then read it to update inventory. The first column is the SKU and in cell A2 it has the value 1028. This outputs fine but when I get to A8 the value is '1051-LV' and in my output it is blank. I am thinking in my dataset it reads A2 value and that becomes the type for the remainder of the rows. But what if that is wrong? How do I fix so it doesn't set the datetype to say int when it could be a string type?
Below is my code and works but the output of certain rows sku values are blank and are not like that in the excel file.
Code:
Protected Sub btnGetExcelFile_Click(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnGetExcelFile.Click
litOutput.Text = ""
Dim ws As New WebPost
ws.URL = "http://www.domain.com/dropship/feed.xls"
'downloads excel file based on url
Dim bExcel() As Byte = ws.RequestBinaryData("", True)
[Code] ....

I am trying to read a text file from the root of the server. This is what I tried
Code:
Dim sr As StreamReader
Try
sr = File.OpenText("~ est.txt")
Label1.Text = sr.ReadToEnd
Catch ex As Exception
Label1.Text = ex.Message
End Try
If I test this locally, I get the error: "Could not find a part of the path 'C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesMicrosoft SharedDevServer10.est.txt'."If I upload it and run the code on the server, nothing happens (Lable1.text does not change).

it may not have to do with silverlight as such, but a "security" issue. I appologize if that was wrong.
I´m having a go at silverlight...
I want to display large amount of data in good looking charts. Ideally, I would use a web service. However none of the tutorials I´ve watched works. There´s always some component or class missing.
So I figured I´d do it the "ugly" way, creating a xml file from a dataset, and then reading it in the silverlight app.
Now when debugging, I use a local file, which is apparently not permitted
But there must be a way around it right?

I would like to access an Excel 2010 spreadsheet via ASP.NET 4 - what is the best (i.e. straight forward) method to do this? I would like to update the spreadsheet via ASP then read the results of the data from Excel back to a web form.

I come from MVC side, where these things make more sense (of course just because I know a bit about it) and my webforms are still sucky sucky.
I got a page where I want the user to upload a file (Excel).
Not too worried about the upload timing out, but after uploading this file will be processed (time & attendance data to be written to the database)
So what I'd like to happen is everything happen asynchronously with the page being updated as the file are being processed.
Also, I'm not sure.. won't I need excel on the server to have my code read the excel file?

User's need to "download" an excel sheet with data.
However this sheet need to be created on the fly (user's can check of which data they want exported).
From the user's point of view, it will just be a link "Download Now".
From coding point of view I will have an IList<MyClass> where MyClass say got members like EntryId, FirstName, LastName etc.
I do not want all fields to be dropped into the sheet (so I will need control over that in my code)
This sounds like what I'm after (since I'll always only have one sheet)
Create an HTML document and save it with a .xls extension - Excel will open it and treat it like a native Excel file. This method is very simple and, of course, free - however, it won't allow you to have more than one worksheet in the Excel workbook...

I have a clean installation of Windows 7 with VS2010 RTM and am trying to get the ASP.NET Development Server to work. When I run the project, the WebDev server starts and shows that it's listening on port x on localhost. I've tried:telnet to the port. The port is not listening. running netstat -o shows that the WebDev server is in fact not listening on any port. manually changing the WebDev port to a different port and restarted VS without effect. I have Windows Firewall turned off entirely and am not running any other firewall software either.

I am wanting to display an excel 2010 document in an asp.net web application. This document uses the new slicer functionality which I want to be available to the user.I know that excel 2010 docs can be used within sharepoint by inserting a web part which uses exceservices.But can it be achieved without sharepoint? Or can it be achieved using the the excelservices API to get the document from shreapoint and then somehow get it to the browser in .net?

How do I bind data from an Excel file named Book1.xlsx in Column A to a dropdownlist? I've tried like this:
Code:
connExcel.Open()
cmdExcel.CommandText = "SELECT distinct BCName From [Sheet1$] where BCName <> '' and ProjectName like 'Total%';"
oda.SelectCommand = cmdExcel
oda.Fill(dt2)
connExcel.Close()
dropdown1.DataSource = dt2
dropdown1.DataBind()
But the dropdown is filled with "System.Data.DataRowView" for all the 5 lines in the dropdown. How do I get the values shown instead of this? It must be some formatting of dt2 I think.

I want to convert date from May 20 2010 2:54PM to 2010/5/17
Has anyone does this before.
I want this functionality both in C# and JavaScript.
In javascript I was trying the following
var dte = new Date();
dte = Date.Parse('May 20 2010 2:54PM')
however this was giving me NaN.
let me know if you want to see my code in C#, it isn't working and I think it is broken so am not posting here.

I have a droplist, that I generate from an Excel file.
Code:
cmdExcel.Connection.Open()
dropdown1.DataSource = cmdExcel.ExecuteReader()
dropdown1.DataTextField = "BCName"
dropdown1.DataBind()
cmdExcel.Connection.Close()
I want to add two more options to the droplist:
dropdown1.Items.Add("Select")
dropdown1.Items.Add("All")
But if I do like this they are added after the items from the databind. I want the Select and All as the two first ones and then get the rest from the databind. How do I do that?

This should be easy enough but I can't seem to get it to work. I have a master list table someone forwarded me a separate email table. So, I wrote a quick and very inefficient block to add the emails to the master list. Everything works fine on the form as datagridview1 shows my changes and states the numbers of rows affected. When I check the actual mdb file though, no changes are ever made.

I've wrote the comprehensive post within my blog: [URL] In brief words everything is simple:
1. I've downloaded free Visual Studio C# 2010 Express and Visual Studio Web Developer 2010 Express
2. I've successfully installed these versions.
3. I've tried registration online - and got the appropriate keys which I've used for registration.
Finally all the keys I've got are not valid for the system - and after 30 days evaluation (for free version?) period all these products are not running anymore because all the keys I am providing from online registration are invalid.

Which approach should I take? Sohuld I do it using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel or should I do it using OLEDB in ADO.Net?

I have a scenario where I have to read an excel file to dump records in a mysql database. The code generates an exception Sheet1 not found. I have pasted the code below. Please let me know the solution to the exception. I have given the correct read/write/modify settings to my excel file.
if (fileUpload1.PostedFile.FileName.EndsWith(".xls") || fileUpload1.PostedFile.FileName.EndsWith(".XLS"))
{
string fileName = Server.MapPath(fileUpload1.PostedFile.FileName);
string connString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=" + fileName + ";Extended Properties=Excel 8.0";
// Create the connection object
OleDbConnection oledbConn = new OleDbConnection(connString);
try
{
// Open connection
oledbConn.Open();
// Create OleDbCommand object and select data from worksheet Sheet1
OleDbCommand cmd = new OleDbCommand("SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$]" , oledbConn);
// Create new OleDbDataAdapter
OleDbDataAdapter oleda = new OleDbDataAdapter();
oleda.SelectCommand = cmd;
// Create a DataSet which will hold the data extracted from the worksheet.
DataSet ds = new DataSet();
// Fill the DataSet from the data extracted from the worksheet.
oleda.Fill(ds, "RestaurantExcelData");
for (int i = 0; i < ds.Tables[0].Rows.Count; i++)
{
Response.Write("Data: " + ds.Tables[0].Rows[i].ItemArray[0].ToString() + "");
}
}
catch(Exception e1)
{
}
finally
{
// Close connection
oledbConn.Close();
}
}
else
{
Response.Write("File Not Excel (xls||XLS)");

I am trying to read data from excel file in asp.net. I have added the connection string to webConfig file:
<add name="xls" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=HPM_DB.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0"/>
But it shows me an errormessage when I run this query:
string query = "Select * from [IO_Definition$]";
IO_Definition is the name of the spreadsheet in my excel file. I also added the excel file to the App_Data folder of the website.
The error is:
The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'IO_Definition$'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.
The thing is, when I write the absolute path of the excel file in the connectionString it does work. Is there anyway I can make it work without writing the absolute path?
