Visual Studio :: In A Web App Project The Compiler Does Not Recognize Simple Controls

Mar 7, 2011

In VS2008 I create an empty Solution "CmsWork" with a new Web App Project "CmsWork" and add a Web Form "TestForm1.aspx".

From Toolbox I add a TextBox and then in codebehind try to refer to it in Page_Load. Intellisense and compiler both say TextBox1 does not exist in the current context. Tried referencing the control as TestForm1.TextBox1 and CmsWork.TestForm1.TextBox1 --
same error. wtf?

TextBox1 shows up fine in Design View and is labeled "TextBox1". What does Design View know that Code View and the compiler don't? Adding code to call FindControl and typecast to a TextBox works fine, but shouldn't be necessary. Controls can be referenced by ID in a codebehind in a Website project. Why not in a Web App project? This should just trivially work. I must be missing something EXTREMELY simple. I've tried restarting VS2008 normally and with "devenv /resetsettings" -- no effect. Reboot: no effect.

This is VS2008 Development Edition under Windows Server Enterprise SP2, with no VS add-ons, extensions, etc.

Aspx page:[Code]....

Codebehind:[Code]....

Build output:

Error 82 The name 'TextBox1' does not exist in the current context C:Users...DocumentsVisual Studio 2008ProjectsCmsWorkCmsWorkTestForm1.aspx.cs 14 4 CmsWork

C# - Migrating From Website Project To Web Application Project In Visual Studio 2010 Causing All Controls To Throw Error?

Mar 29, 2011

I recently updated my VS2010 website project from .NET 3.5 to 4.0. Everything was working fine in the website project. Today I decided to migrate the website to a web application project as I have learned this is the best way to work in .NET. I split out all my class files into a separate class library and copied all my other content into my new project. Then I updated all the references and web.config.

When I build the class library, everything works great. The problem is happening when I try to build/debug the web application project. It is acting like all the controls are missing and it is also throwing a bunch of compile errors about the public properties I have in my master pages.

Control errors: "The name 'INSERT CONTROL NAME HERE' does not exist in the current context"

Master page errors:'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition....

It is giving these errors for every single control and master page property in my entire solution.I notice when I add a new web.form to this project, it also adds a filename.aspx.designer.cs file in addition to the .aspx and .aspx.cs file. My existing files do not have these extra files since they were created in a different .NET version.

UPDATE: It seems I was missing the step where I need to right click on the new application folder and select "Convert to web application". I just did that and it seems to be a little bit better...

Now it is choking on Literals that are inside single quotes:

<div class='<asp:Literal ID="CssClassLiteral" runat="server"></asp:Literal>'>

It doesn't see this literal when it does the conversion... Is the above valid code or should I implement that functionality another way?

Visual Studio 2008 Development Server Uses C# 2.0 Compiler?

Aug 4, 2010

I have a test website with VS 2008 that just uses code behind files, such as Foo.aspx.cs. Thus, the web server compiles them on the fly. The problem I'm running into is I can't use any C# 3.0 features. If I do:

[code]....

Then VS will work fine (everything gets highlighted and Intellisensed), but when I run the site it just throws up compiler errors..

Is there a way to fix this, or do you have to compile a DLL to target the 3.0 runtime? If so that's insanely lame.

Visual Studio :: Code Worked With One Compiler But Not Newer One?

Jan 26, 2010

I have a code that runs correctly when compiled with Compaq Visual Fortran 6.1; however, when compiled with Visual Studio 2003 (w/ intel fortran compiler), it crashes due to a convergence issue. Since the input deck that the code reads from is exactly the same in both cases, I assume this has to be a configuration issue between the two compilers.

Visual Studio :: Code-behind Page Does Not Recognize Controls On Main Page?

Jan 3, 2011

My site was working fine in Visual Studio 2008, but the code-behind pages have suddenly stopped recognising new controls which I add to the main page. For example I added a label with id 'lblEventHeader' to the main page and then tried to set a text property in the Page_Load event. I get a compile error of "the name 'lblEventHeader' does not exist in tne current context. Existing controls, which I added before this problem seems to be unaffected.

As far as I am aware, I have not done anything which should cause this. I have even reinstalled Visual Studio, but I still get the same error message. Have I inadvertently deleted or corrupted a reference file. I have checked the Codefile and Inherits properties of the page.

I cannot get VWD to recognize a database where access is limited to an internal IP from the Web server. Remote connections directly to the database aren't allowed.I'm using Visual Web Developer 2008 Express on my machine. Our Web site is on a remote hosted server, say 1.1.1.1. We have MSSQL 2005 set up on another remote hosted server, available only through an internal IP, say 2.2.2.2, from the Web server. RemotI'm going crazy trying to establish a connection in VWD that will actually display the database in VWD's Database Explorer, which would then allow me to use the VWD tools to add data elements to my pages.

Web Forms :: Profile Object - Compiler Doesn't Recognize Surname?

May 28, 2010

I have created profile objects in my web.config file:

[Code]....

[Code]....

In all tutorials I am finding on the net it says in order to read/write from these properties I just need to use the syntax with C#:

Profile.Surname = "Surname";

But this does not work on my web site code when I'm using C# it underlines and recommends I change to System.Web.Profile.Surname (which I do) but then Intellisense and the compiler do not recognise Surname. What am I doing wrong? I am using Visual Studio 2010 and .Net V4.

Visual Studio -- How To Test Simple Vb.net Code

Mar 23, 2011

I'm going thru an asp.net 4 book, and I'm at a part about classes and their properties and functions. But up to now, all the examples involve a web_site, with controls, code_behind files, CSS, etc. But, I get to places where I don't understand the examples, so I look out on the web for other resources. For example, I found the code below to demonstrate the "ToString" function. My problem is, I'm not sure know how to test a little piece of code like this. Can't I just open up an application or project or something, paste this in and run it?

Module Module1
Class Perl
Dim _a As Integer
Dim _b As Integer
Public Sub New(ByVal a As Integer, ByVal b As Integer)
_a = a
_b = b
End Sub
Public Overrides Function ToString() As String
Return String.Format("[{0}, {1}]", _a, _b)
End Function
End Class
Sub Main()
Dim p As Perl = New Perl(2, 3)
Console.WriteLine(p)
End Sub
End Module

"There was an error while enumerating services on local machine:

Another possible cause is that IIS is not installed on the local machine, or the user identity under which you are running may not have permissions to view websites on this machine. Visual Studio :: Web Deployment Project Not Creating DLL From ASCX Controls?

Jan 27, 2011

I am trying to get VS 2008 SP1 to precompile a development site using the Web Deployment Project method. I've done this previously with a different site containing ASPX pages, with success. However, this is a third party example web application containing a set of ASCX controls. The idea is that I want to create a precompiled DLL containing the controls, that can then be distributed as a library DLL. I thought the the use of WDP should allow the compiler to compile all the ASCX controls, and then optionally merge them all into a single DLL.

The problem is, the WDP build reports that it succeeds, but the only file generated is the precompiledapp.config file. On closer inspection of the reporting, it seems that the only error reported is:

aspnet_merge : warning 1013: Cannot find any assemblies that can be merged ...

which I assume refers to the DLL merging process at the end of the compile. This that the compiler was unable to find or process any of the ascx controls in the web application, and so didn't produce any DLLs from them.

I don't really understand what is going wrong here. Should I be able to run a Web Deployment Project like this to compile ASCX controls in this way, and if so, what is likely to be going wrong here? Could the ASCX files somehow be protected from the compiler, to prevent redistribution?

Visual Studio :: Adding New Controls To Project That Was Converted To Vs 2010?

[Code]....

and it worked fine. Why would I have to add something to the designer.cs file though? Shouldn't this have been created automatically when I built the project?
