Visual Studio Doesn't Recognize Dynamic User Control Class
Jul 15, 2010
I have created a user control which is inside a folder called Controls and the class is a partial class which inherits from Web.UI.UserControl. Now from my page which is one level up I just try to access the method inside the usercontrol and so trying to cast it as the type of user control. But I get build errors. It just cannot recognize that class. I get Type not defined error. But at times it has recognized the class. Dont know why it does that.

In my current project (ASP.Net 2.0) I have a lot of web user controls, among them "Office.ascx". Office.ascx is loaded into another controls using this line:
guide_controls_display_Office o = (guide_controls_display_Office)LoadControl("Office.ascx");
The control I am loading it into has Office.ascx registered using this line:
<%@ Register TagName="office" TagPrefix="uc" Src="Office.ascx" %>
But I get this error upon launching the web page: Unable to cast object of type 'ASP.guide_controls_display_office_ascx' to type 'guide_controls_display_Office'. Why do I get this message? I can see that the first type has "ASP." in front of it. Is that normal?

I cannot get VWD to recognize a database where access is limited to an internal IP from the Web server. Remote connections directly to the database aren't allowed.I'm using Visual Web Developer 2008 Express on my machine. Our Web site is on a remote hosted server, say 1.1.1.1. We have MSSQL 2005 set up on another remote hosted server, available only through an internal IP, say 2.2.2.2, from the Web server. RemotI'm going crazy trying to establish a connection in VWD that will actually display the database in VWD's Database Explorer, which would then allow me to use the VWD tools to add data elements to my pages.

In VS2008 I create an empty Solution "CmsWork" with a new Web App Project "CmsWork" and add a Web Form "TestForm1.aspx".
From Toolbox I add a TextBox and then in codebehind try to refer to it in Page_Load. Intellisense and compiler both say TextBox1 does not exist in the current context. Tried referencing the control as TestForm1.TextBox1 and CmsWork.TestForm1.TextBox1 --
same error. wtf?
TextBox1 shows up fine in Design View and is labeled "TextBox1". What does Design View know that Code View and the compiler don't? Adding code to call FindControl and typecast to a TextBox works fine, but shouldn't be necessary. Controls can be referenced by ID in a codebehind in a Website project. Why not in a Web App project? This should just trivially work. I must be missing something EXTREMELY simple. I've tried restarting VS2008 normally and with "devenv /resetsettings" -- no effect. Reboot: no effect.
This is VS2008 Development Edition under Windows Server Enterprise SP2, with no VS add-ons, extensions, etc.
Aspx page:[Code]....
Codebehind:[Code]....
Build output:
Error 82 The name 'TextBox1' does not exist in the current context C:Users...DocumentsVisual Studio 2008ProjectsCmsWorkCmsWorkTestForm1.aspx.cs 14 4 CmsWork

I had a website with a few asp.net controls with id like:
btnSave and tbAmount
I renamed one of my controls and when I tried to use it in the code behind I get the following error.
Error 5 Name 'tbAmount' is not declared.
I was messing around trying to add new controlls rather than rename, but nothing seems to work.
And now, none of my controlls that were added to the page are recognized in the code behind. They all have the error:
Error 5 Name 'tbAmount' is not declared.
Or
Error 3 Name 'hfNoteId' is either not declared or not in the current
scope. E:NoteTenderNoteTenderMembersManageNote.aspx.vb 33 71 NoteTender
Even my button click event handler gives me the following error:
Error 2 Handles clause requires a WithEvents variable defined in the containing type or one of its base types. E:NoteTenderNoteTenderMembersManageNote.aspx.vb 27 91 NoteTender
I have verified that my inherits is using the correct namespace and class name.

My site was working fine in Visual Studio 2008, but the code-behind pages have suddenly stopped recognising new controls which I add to the main page. For example I added a label with id 'lblEventHeader' to the main page and then tried to set a text property in the Page_Load event. I get a compile error of "the name 'lblEventHeader' does not exist in tne current context. Existing controls, which I added before this problem seems to be unaffected.
As far as I am aware, I have not done anything which should cause this. I have even reinstalled Visual Studio, but I still get the same error message. Have I inadvertently deleted or corrupted a reference file. I have checked the Codefile and Inherits properties of the page.

I have a custom control in my mater page that represents a menu, let's call it CustomMenu. The control code files are located in a non special directory. I want to give each page that uses that master page the ability to access the control and, using a public property, tell the control whether or not it should render itself. I have a public property on the control to do that, and I know I can get the control by referencing Page.Master.FindControl('IdOfControlIwant');
The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to get the control Type recognized by the compiler, so when I do find the menu control, I can't actually work with it. The only way I can get the code behind to recognize the type is to register it in the ascx file, and then add at least one control to the page, which is undesirable.

I work now in a huge project that we build all interface as Web User Controls .. every time I want to view & test one i should add it in web page and then view .. I think in a way to develop a visual studio extension that show "View in Temp Web Page" when I make right click on a user control to allow me view user control in a generated temp web page without needing to add it in a test page each time i want to test but i don't know is there any way to achieve that ... Is it possible to develop such a thing ?

suppose i've created my own user control, and it has a textbox and a property for the textbox so that if i use the user control from within the aspx file, i can give the property a value. for example:
[Code]....
is it possible to also set the property to be seen via the desing mode , just as it works for other (built in) controls? maybe a different method to implement the same scenario?
if you still didn't understand what i mean : after setting the value of DefaultNum1 via the code i've written here, i expect the textbox associated with this property to be updated as well to '1' via the design mode (and split mode). of course it won't work using the current method, since VS cannot guess what is going on with the property and understand that all of its purpose is to assign an initialization value for the textbox.

I have developed a User Control in inline code model and convert this into dll and try to add it into Visual Studio ToolBox. It shows error "There is no component found in the object.". It is showing actually because i have not added ToolBoxData attribute just before the class declaration, because there is no class declaration in the inline code model. I don't know where i have to add ToolBoxData attribute.

I have switched over from VS2008 to VS10 (.Net4) and I program in Silverlight. But this problem isn't related to the Silverlight but more so to ASP.Net and that's why I bring it up here. My problem is if I create a SL or even a plain ASP.Net Web app, and I go to Project|ASP Configuration and click on security I get error that it can't find the database. After lots of testing, it turns out if there is no connection string with the name "LocalSqlServe" in my web.config, it does not find Machine.Config in the .Net Framework to get it's default. It also happens at runtime and not just in VS. So, my machine ASP.Net can't find machine.config file. I'm running Vista 32.

I'm so new at this it's pretty pathitic. I have Visual Studio 2008 Team edition and I'm following the walkthough in the help file about how to create your first basic site. All went well until I got to that part about "Put the insertion point after asp:Label in the <asp:Label> tag, and then press SPACEBAR.
A drop-down list appears that displays the list of properties you can set for aLabel control. This feature, referred to as IntelliSense, helps you inSource view with the syntax of server controls, HTML elements, and other items on the page. The following screen shot shows the IntelliSense drop-down list for theLabel control.IntelliSense for Label control"

For some reason, when im making changes to .cs files in my project visual studio seems to freeze for a while, then kick back in. It doesn't happen when editing aspx files or their code behind, just files within the app code directory.
I'm wondering if its got something to do with the fact that most of the classes under app code are using the same namespace, where as the forms/controls i'm using aren't namespaced? Originally i thought it was lack of ram, but after putting 4 gig in it still freezes, it just doesn't lock the computer anymore :D
