Visual Studio :: Unable To Connect To Database From Solution Explorer
Jan 16, 2011
I used the ASP.net Web Site Administration tool to create a database with two users and two roles. The database created successfully and is showing up in Solution Explorer in the App_Data folder of my project, as expected. The problem is, that when I click on the database I get an error message saying that "SQL Server database files (.mdf) require SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Server 2008 Express to be installed and running on the local computer." I, in fact, have 3 versions of SQL Server running on my computer. SQL Server Express (default instance), SQL Server Express (named instance for Outlook 2010 Business Contact Manager), and SQL Server 2008 R2 (Developer Edition). If I create a new connection in Server Explorer and then attach the database file, it attaches fine. It's only in Solution Explorer that it somehow is not connecting.

Weird Sunday morning question: I routinely drag files into my projects from Windows Explorer. But I just created a new project and I get the slashed circle every time I try to drag in a file from Windows Explorer. I closed the project and opened another one just to confirm that I wasn't having a foggy Sunday morning problem but I _am_ able to drag files into the this other project. Trying to drag the same file into my new project won't work. What's up with this?!

I am stumped by a serious issue in Vs 2008.
I created a Blank solution called HelloWorld. Then I added a new Class Library project by the name of HelloWorldService. After creation of the
Class Library project the Solution name disappeared from Solution Explorer.
As a result of which I can now only add new items into the Class Library project but cannot add new item to the solution.
This appears to be a pretty old problem as I found it in another link on the internet.

It seems to be a bug.Has MS released a patch or a fix for this.

Is there a way to change the colors (or perhaps add an overlay) to the files in Solution Explorer? It would be great to be able to 'tag' the files with different colors so that you can see for example what status the different files have.

I have two web forms inside the same project folder that will be very similar when completed. When I copy a web form and paste it in the project folder by its new name I can see the .aspx file, the aspx.cs and aspx.designer.cs all by the new name. Appears to work perfect...........Why don't these show up when I view the Solution Folder? I was hoping to copy one, make changes and rename the second one saving time. Appears to not be tied into the Project.

I have noticed today that when you create a directory in code in a web application the resulting folder structure is not created in the solution explorer (It is fine on disk and app can still access all the files
I am not sure if there is a setting that I am missing or is this a bug?Steps to reproduce
Create a new C# web application in VS 2010. Create a new web page (Default.aspx) and add a file upload control and a button.on the click event on the button add the following code
[Code]....
When the form posts back refresh the solution explorer and the new directory does not appear.Check your file system and the file will be there. Not a massive issue but frustrating.

In Visual Web Developer-2010, I have been trying to connect to IBM DB2 Database after installing the DB2 9.7 client (both supports VS2010/.Net4) so that I can use "ADO.NET Entity Data Model", but while clicking "New Connection" I can only see the list of Data Sources and Data Provider only related to MS SQL server. This is totally blocking my work, I am not able to work further since I cannot even establish the connection to my db2 database using this new editor so that I can create the edmx files in the solution for non MSSQL databases. Kindly provide me the solution ASAP, since my further work is blocking due to this.

I am using VWD 2010 Express, usually with several site pages open in tabs. For some reason, when I move from one tab to another, the newly active page is not highlighted in the Solution Explorer pane. Is there some setting that is causing this? I often have two similar pages open, referring to the code on one as I work on the other, and not having the Solution Explorere correctly highlighting the active page make it really easy to be working on the wrong page.

I'm getting this problem with one of my web projects. I've looked at [URL] and other suggestions around the place, none of which apply here. The odd thing is, it's occurring with *one* of my new web site projects, but not another one. Odd again is that they're both 100% fresh sites, created with the "New Web Site" option in the File menu, within a day of each other, and nothing has been done to them, apart from a bit of "hello world" html. WebSite1 was created first, and Cassini worked when I first created it the other day. A day later, I created WebSite2 and Cassini worked (and still works) with that one.
However, when I open WebSite1, I get the above error code - again, it was working fine the other day, and WebSite2 works fine. I've compared their .sln file - so differences apart from the VWDPort number used, and of course the path to the site and various GUIDs. Everything else is identical. Same with comparing web.config files. No differences there at all. So I'm stumped - why would Cassini start up fine with WebSite2 (and subsequent sites I create) but suddenly stop working for the WebSite1 project, when it was working ok a couple of days ago?

Not too long ago I was given a new PC with windows 7 Professional on it. Before, I had vs 2008 running on win xp which worked OK. I started getting error msg (Unable to connect to ASP.NET development server) after I installed vs 2008 (version 9.0.30729.1 sp1 vs team system dev. edition) and ran one of my projects and even a simple test project. The first msg shows the syntax of webdev.webserver with an example in the bottom. I can get this error by running the project or by showing any page in the browser. I noticed that file WebDev.WebServer.EXE does not appear in the folder C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv3.5. If that's the only reason why I am having this problem than how can I fix it. I was told that .net framework 3.5 works on top of .net framework 2.0?! I just want to sort out this .net framework mess on my new machine. I am willing to uninstall all .net framework and start fresh. Another thing that I am willing to try is to get from a coworker the WebDev.WebServer.EXE (from the .net framework 3.5 folder) and see if it works.

I recently purchased a new computer running Windows 7 Home, and after installing Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express, I am unable to connect to the database using the "Connect To Database" wizard. I get the following error:
"This server version is not supported. You must have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 or later."
The version of SQL Server 2005 Express I've downloaded is directly from the Microsoft site and I also downloaded the SP3 to be used with Windows 7, x64 (which I presumed was a later version of the database). I am able to connect to the database programatically, but I would like to get the wizard functionality working as well (as I am unable to add a database to my projects, using the "Add New Item" wizard either).

I do not have SQL Express installed as I already have SQL 2008 (Developer) on my Dev machine. When I say add new item -> SQL Database, give it a name and say "yes" to it creating me the app folder I then get the message that I need to have SQL Express installed and I can download it from blah blah.
Why will it not let me use/recognise my installed instance of SQL Server?

I got these errors while trying to run a web application using vs 2008, The first error is this: >Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. >process ID=0x1130 (4400), Thread ID=0xe6c (3692). And when I press OK a second dialog reports this error:>unable to connect to the asp.net development server. I reinstalled, repaired and re registered msdbg2.dll and edited hosts file but still get this error. I need to debug an application but I can't. This error is on a 'Win 2003 server enrterprise service pack 1' with a vs2008 team system installation. What can I do to remove this error and run and debug my application?

I just started getting the error message "Unable to Connect to the ASP.net Development Server" when debugging a website with VWD 2008 (everything was fine in the past). My system is Windows Vista with Windows Live OneCare firewall. I have reviewed other postings related to this problem, and they indicate firewall setting problems - settings not allowing VWD internet access. However, my settings on the "Windows Live OneCare Firewall Advanced Settings" tab specifically allow VWD.

I noticed that when I download a framework say like "Coolite" and open the solution, and find the Connection to the Database showed up in the Server Explorer.
In some other times, the Connection Dose not show.
I can create a connection to a Database in Server Exploere, but I need say to add it to my Web.Config directly, but not sure how. I am trying to drag-and-drop from the Server Explorer to Web.Config, it is not working.
When and how the Connections to Databases will show in Server Explorer ?
How I can create a connection to a Database using say a Wizard, and add it directly to Web.Config ?
