WCF / ASMX :: Get The Requester's Ip Address From Web Service?
Oct 7, 2010
I create a web service with a web method. I need to detect the requester's ip address.
Request.ServerVariables["REMOTE_ADDR"] that works in web form does not seem to work in web service. How can I detect the requester's ip address and in which of the web service should the codes be placed?

We have an exisiting Web Service which receives SOAP requests and returns the data accordingly. However, we have a new project which requires the same information but the Android SDK doesn't support SOAP so we need to use JSON. As JSON is just a data container format, I need to write a new module to replace the SOAP WSDL which receives a querystring from the Android app and then processes the data and returns it in a JSON packet. The problem is that having never used JSON I'm unsure as to how I return the data to the app in JSON format. Does anyone have any examples I can look at in VB.Net or C#?

I have managed to expose the MEX endpoint of my WCF service and I can access it with the address like [URL] (example) and get the WDSL. So no problem there.
However, my WCF test page shows the address wrongly by using the server's name instead of the DNS name. And if I click on the link on the test page it won't work (can't get WSDL).
The WCF test page looks like this:
MyService Service
You have created a service.
To test this service, you will need to create a client and use it to call the service.
[URL]
The WCF service is hosted in IIS6. I would like to have a test page with the correct WSDL address so users can see the WSDL quickly in the browser just by clicking on the WSDL address.
In short: How can I change the MyServerName to inter.mycompany.com on the WCF test page? Can this be specified somewhere in the Web.config?

A customer reported that our asmx web service is continually increasing in memory (mem usage as well as private bytes). We are able to reproduce the problem in our lab with Windows 2003 Server SP2 (fully patched) on some of the machines. The customer is using Windows 2008.
We created a Hello World web service targeting the 2.0 framework built under VS2005 SP1 and a test client that continues to call it. The memory increases steadily - approximately 40K per client request. If the test app is paused, the memory remains the same. When it is closed, the memory drops. Explicit calling of GC.Collect does not drop the memory.
We have run the memory profiler on the service and the leak is all native memory. We have uninstalled/re-installed the Framework on one of the machines but no difference. To our knowledge all of the security and IIS settings are not modified. We have compared app pool, default web site and virtual directory properties to machines that have no problem and they are identical.

Is it possible to run a web service as a particular user/service account in the same way a Windows service can?I have a service account used for connecting to the DB and want to run the webservice under this account as the users using the webservice won't have DB access.The way I see to do it is to include the Impersonate option in the Web.config file, but is there any better way to do this?

My WCF Client calls my WCF Service which then calls ASMX Web Service. The problem is i have configured my wcf client and wcf service to windows credentials type but when wcf service calls asmx service the user credentials (default windowsidentity) is not passed to asmx service.
In WCF Service i am able to get user identity by using : Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name;
WCF Service - i have disabled anonymous access and enabled windows authentication. ASMX Web Service - i have disabled anonymous access and enabled windows authentication.

I am keep getting an error that "Service Error : wbsTest failed" where wbsTest is my webservice.
The error comes up frequently enough for the user - normally reproducible within a minute or so of working with an application.
A bit of background: An user is a remote user accessing application hosted on our servers over https. He is software firewalled and his connection isn't the fastest but it is responsive enough. When errors do not present themselves, page loads are fairly quick.

I had to move a WCF service (IIS hosted) to a new address. This service is called by a webforms web site on a different site in the same instance of IIS. I checked the WCF service is available and working by calling it directly from a browser.
I then did the following
updated the Service Reference folder in my consuming website updated the web.config servicemodel section (it was auto updated by changing the Service Reference) re-built and deployed libraries using the WCF service to the websites bin folder Stopped the consuming website in IIS and deleted files from Temporary ASP.NET Files folder Re-started IIS and deleted *ALL* files from Temporary ASP.NET files
When I browse to a page that calls the WCF service I get the error;
EndpointNotFoundException
There was no endpoint listening at <<Old endpoint address>> that could accept the message
How can I force my website to use the new WCF endpoint? Do I need to re-start the web server?

I am using ASP.NET (.asmx) web services with Silverlight. Since there is no way to find the client IP address in Silverlight, I had to log this on the service end.
These are some methods I have tried:
Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_HOST")
HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["REMOTE_ADDR"]
HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR"];
Request.UserHostAddress()
Request.UserHostName()
string strHostName = Dns.GetHostName();
string clientIPAddress = Dns.GetHostAddresses(strHostName).GetValue(0).ToString();
All the above methods work fine on my local system, but when I publish my service on a production server, it starts giving errors, Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. StackTrace:
at System.Web.Hosting.ISAPIWorkerRequestInProc.GetAdditionalServerVar(Int32 index)
at System.Web.Hosting.ISAPIWorkerRequestInProc.GetServerVariable(String name)
at System.Web.Hosting.ISAPIWorkerRequest.GetRemoteAddress()

How can I check if an email address actually exists?
I have a list of email addresses which I want to screen for dead email accounts (without sending an email msg with a hyperlink). Is there a web-service for this? Or C# code (which I prever instead of sending the data to someone else)?

I am writing a program to measure the latency(response round trip time) for a web service. I need to have this at client side.
My initial plan is to store the time at which request is sent and then calculate the difference in time when we recieve a response from the web service. Is this the correct way to measure latency of web service. This has some overhead because of storing time and all. How can this be done?
Another option is to attach a timestamp with the SOAP request. But the server should return the timestamp. This will not be possible in case of third party web services.

I want to get country name from ip address in asp.net using web service. I used 2 web services [URL] and [URL] but they are not fulfilling my requirement. if my ip address is 212.76.87.27 then it is ok. but if my ip address is 31.167.42.94 then giving me error. I think these web services have not updated Ip address record. Any webservice which has updated ip address record and can return the country name correctly without error.

I was trying to go through this tutorial:
[URL]
but when I tried to add the service reference to the silverlight app, the Add Service Reference window would show me that there was a service file, but the node wouldn't expand to show the rest of the files that contain the services and what not. I got this error instead:
"An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately."
"Parser Error Message:There is no service behavior named 'AdventureWorks_WebServer.Service1Behavior'."
"Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'http://localhost:55579/Service1.svc'.
The server did not provide a meaningful reply; this might be caused by a contract mismatch, a premature session shutdown or an internal server error.
If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again."
here's my web.config file:
