Is it possible to run a web service as a particular user/service account in the same way a Windows service can?I have a service account used for connecting to the DB and want to run the webservice under this account as the users using the webservice won't have DB access.The way I see to do it is to include the Impersonate option in the Web.config file, but is there any better way to do this?
View 1 RepliesMy WCF Client calls my WCF Service which then calls ASMX Web Service. The problem is i have configured my wcf client and wcf service to windows credentials type but when wcf service calls asmx service the user credentials (default windowsidentity) is not passed to asmx service.
In WCF Service i am able to get user identity by using : Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name;
WCF Service - i have disabled anonymous access and enabled windows authentication. ASMX Web Service - i have disabled anonymous access and enabled windows authentication.

View 5 Repliesam having a web service that fetches some couple of results. When i run the service independently in my firefox, it returns the required result. But when i use Ajaxautocomplete in my page, it returns no result. The page is binded to a master page and is in a folder thats attached to the root folder....i.e. My page is in ~/Students/Default.aspx. My Service is also in a folder where i prospect to put future services...i.e. ~/Services/WebService.asmx.Here is a code for my webservice

I wont to restrict my web service only for few domains.
I wont to have access to web service from using ajax and my page, and I don't want that anybody can create client to my WebService and view my web service methods.
I have an Asp.net 3.5 xml web service that I created using the file new website within Visual Studio 2008. I can install and run the web service on a remote server using a web setup project after adding the necessary entries to the web.config file. The problem currently is that the xml web service needs to be configured to use a domain name and not a server name. My coworker has not been able to configure the virtual directory to use a domain name and work successfully. The web service returns a site under construction error.

I have a service called Yardi Services on a virtual server. I want to be able to show on a dashboard I am creating for work, whether this service in running or stopped. For some reason this service will randomly stop though I have a auto restart on error. I am assuming that I would need to create a web service or use WMI?

When i access this service when running my asp.net website through code everything works fine how ever when i deploy the application on the local IIS , in the deployed mode i am getting an securityaccessdeined exception. The error comes up frequently enough for the user - normally reproducible within a minute or so of working with an application.
A bit of background: An user is a remote user accessing application hosted on our servers over https. He is software firewalled and his connection isn't the fastest but it is responsive enough. When errors do not present themselves, page loads are fairly quick.
The XML element 'EnableTheming' from namespace 'http://tempuri.org/' is already present in the current scope. Use XML attributes to specify another XML name or namespace for the element. when i am running my webservice There is no error at build time its build up successfully.

My initial plan is to store the time at which request is sent and then calculate the difference in time when we recieve a response from the web service. Is this the correct way to measure latency of web service. This has some overhead because of storing time and all. How can this be done?
Another option is to attach a timestamp with the SOAP request. But the server should return the timestamp. This will not be possible in case of third party web services.

but when I tried to add the service reference to the silverlight app, the Add Service Reference window would show me that there was a service file, but the node wouldn't expand to show the rest of the files that contain the services and what not. I got this error instead:

I have an ASP.NET web app where I use an ado sql connection to connect to a database on a SQL Server. The ado connection string is provided with a user login that has sufficient rights to read/write to the database. I originally pushed out the web app in its own IIS web site, using its own application pool and everything worked fine.
However, I am now trying to include the web app under an already existing web site. Everything seemed to work fine until I tried any functionality that called for an INSERT or UPDATE to the database. It turns out the user connecting to the DB didn't have sufficient permissions. Finding this strange, I did some research and found a forum post that suggested the IIS Web Site service account needed read/write permissions in the SQL database in order for an app to perform INSERT/UPDATE. Is this true?
I tested it out, and yes, indeed it worked, only with the Application Pool Identity account. The deatails of my scenario are as follows:
The web app's first IIS Web Site had an application pool Identity that ran under NETWORK SERVICE, which already had a login for SQL SERVER The already existing web site's application pool Identity runs under a domain account. This site already runs another web app that connects to the same database using LINQ (developed by someone else). I am relatively new to web development and am more familiar with ADO, so that is the route I chose.The domain account mentioned above formerly had no SQL Server login/user mapping. I set it up as a dbowner, and viola, the new web app worked under the existing web site.
While I found a way for it to work, we would rather not create a SQL login for this Identity account. We want the login provided in the web app's ADO SqlConnection to be the one to actually connect, because isn't that the point of it?
I have a web application. This application needs to perform a search on folders located on 2 different machines. I can use impersonation for this. But -
a. I don't want to use network service account
b. I want to impersonate just the search part of the code.
c. Specifying encrypted user name / password in web.config is one option. But this would be the last option.
Can I use a custom service account for the application pool for this? If yes, then how to impersonate a specific part of code using this?
I am looking for a code which does authentication using service account username and password. I mean username and password which has permission to access the active directory and then authenticate the actual username and password provided by end-user. Googled everywhere but could not find any suitable code.
