WCF / ASMX :: Keep Object Alive On Server In Service

Nov 19, 2010

I have to keep a datacontext alive in a WCF service. This object is created on every call to the service, by the way decreasing performance. How could I keep this object alive with WCF.

WCF / ASMX :: Web Service Error: Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object

Jan 15, 2010

I could really use some help on this one. I've been fighting it now for several days and we are supposed to start testing early next week.I am subscribing to 4 web services all hosted by the same company. The integration with 1, 2 and 3 all went fine, but on the fourth I keep getting the very unhelpful error:

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException = {"Server was unable to process request. ---> Object reference not set to an instance of an object."}

WCF / ASMX :: VS 2008 - Consuming A Web Service As A Business Object

Jun 30, 2010

I'm fairly new to .NET development so I might be missing something very simple here. I'm trying to set up a web service as a data item so that I can bind it to a control on my page. I was reading some tutorials about doing this in an earlier version which seemed very simple. All you had to do was add the web reference, create a data source and use the object type, pick the web service and enter the name of the call that would retrieve the data.

In 2008 the object data source type doesn't seem to be available anymore when creating a new item unde app_data. I get options for SQL Server, XML and XML schema. I've tried adding an existing source and picking each of the files generated for my web service reference, with no success. I suspect that I have to use one of the XML options, though at this point my web service is a simple thing that only returns some strings for prototyping purposes (I'm not the one writing the web service, just the front ends. Our other developer hasn't come up with a stub service yet). I know there must be some way to set a web service up as a business object so that you can bind it to a control like a gridview.

WCF / ASMX :: Web Service - WebMethod Accepting Custom Object?

May 11, 2010

I have a custom class declared as follows (in vb.net)

<Serializable()> _
Public Class NumInfo
Public n As String
Public f As Integer
Public fc As char()
Public t As Integer
Public tc As char()
Private validFlag As Boolean = True
Public Sub New()
End Sub

I also have public properties(read/write) for all the public variables

End Class
In my service.asmx codebehind class I have a webmethod as follows:
<WebMethod> _
<XmlInclude(GetType(NumInfo))>
Public Function ConvertTo(ByVal info As NumInfo) As String
Return mbc(info)
'mbc is another function defined in my service.asmx "service" class
End Function

The problem is that when I start debugging it to test it, the page that I get does not contain any fields where I could input the values for the public fields of numInfo. How do I initialise the class? There is no "Invoke" button either. All I see are soap details as below:

ConvertTo
Test
The test form is only available for methods with primitive types as parameters. SOAP 1.1 The following is a sample SOAP 1.1 request and response. The placeholders shown need to be replaced with actual values.
POST /BaseConverter/BaseCon.asmx HTTP/1.1
Host: localhost
Content-Type: text/xml; charset=utf-8
Content-Length: length
SOAPAction: "http://RohitServices.in/ConvertTo"
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<soap:Envelope xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
<soap:Body>
<ConvertTo xmlns="http://RohitServices.in/">
<info>
<n>string</n>
<f>int</f>
<fc>
<char>char</char>
<char>char</char>
</fc>

What am I doing wrong? For the record I tried replacing char() with string to see if it was the array causing problems but that didn't help either. I'm fairly new to web services. I tried replacing the custom object parameter with a primitive parameter just to check how things worked and it rendered a page with an input field and invoke button. I just can't seem to get it working with custom object.

How To Keep Session Alive Between Two Calls To A Web Service In A C# Application

Oct 5, 2010

This is quite straight forward. I'm calling a web-service (.asmx, with session enabled) from a c# application. I want each call to be with the same session key as the previous one (as opposed to creating a new session key each time).

Here's my (nothing-out-of-the-ordinary) code:

C# - Disable Keep - Alive On Web Service Client Requests?

Mar 23, 2010

I have a few web servers behind an Amazon EC2 load balancer. I'm using TCP balancing on port 80 (rather than HTTP balancing). I have a client polling a Web Service (running on all web servers) for new items every few seconds. However, the client seems to stay connected to one server and polls that same server each time. I've tried using ServicePointManager to disable KeepAlive, but that didn't change anything. The outgoing connection still had its "connection: keep-alive" HTTP header, and the server kept the TCP connection open. I've also tried adding an override of GetWebRequest to the proxy class created by VS, which inherits from SoapHttpClientProtocol, but I still see the keep-alive header.

If I kill the client's process and restart, it'll connect to a new server via the load balancer, but it'll continue polling that new server forever. Is there a way to force it to connect to a random server each time? I want the load from the one client to be spread across all of the web servers. The client is written in C# (as is the server) and uses a Web Reference (not a Service Reference), which points to the load balancer.

State Management :: Session Key Gets Null While Object Alive

Jan 27, 2011

I have a Authorizeclient.aspx.cs page where I set my session value.Authorizeclient.aspx is a blank page. HttpContext.Current.Session["nodeID"]="0". This session value changes from 0 or non zero which depends on the value returned by Database. If no value is returned I assign HttpContext.Current.Session["nodeID"]="0" as the default state else I assign HttpContext.Current.Session["nodeID"]=resolve(nodeID).ToString()

Till this part it works fine as expected. However, I have a requirement that I need to read the nodeID from Session in other application on the same server. I mean this application too is part of the root project where I initially created the Session and set it. The strange thing is the Session["nodeID"] in application gets null "SOMETIMES" Not always. I am trying to read the Session in Page_Load. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it gets null. Moreover the session object do not die and I can see other keys like Session["Themes"] etc there. The session is in InProc mode and have 20 minutes timeout time.

C# - Leaving A BinaryReader Object Un-disposed In Order To Keep Request.InputStream Alive?

Feb 1, 2011

I have a couple methods to handle the saving of an image using Request.InputStream. I have two extensions that share the HttpContext. In one of my methods, I'm using a BinaryReader to read in the contents and do the processing. However, naturally, when disposing the BinaryReader, it closes off the InputStream property on Request. My SECOND method uses the same input stream to create a thumbnail.

Bascially, I need a way to keep the Request.InputStream property alive after disposing the reader in the first method. Is this possible? Here are my two methods. SaveImageStream() is called first, then GenerateThumbnail().

But that broke the code which calls the WS.

WCF / ASMX :: Server Hosting Service Need To Be Constantly Available?

Nov 25, 2010

Lets say I have a web service installed on ServerA. I also have a web application hosted on ServerB, completely different domain from ServerA. That web application contains a web reference to ServerA's web service, so consumes it. What happens if the WAN connection between ServerA and ServerB goes down, for whatever reason? I'm not clear if, once the web method is coded into the consuming application, that the server hosting the service has to be constantly available or not.

WCF / ASMX :: Getting 403 Then 404 Error On Web Service That Was Working On Prior Server?

Mar 2, 2011

I have a web service that was running on Server 2003, IIS6. The service required an SSL connection. The service expects 4 parameters; a User ID, Password, Record ID and the "type" of data requested (one of 5 options). The service validates the user then simply performs a select of the record ID from a table determined by the type specified. This service was up and running for a couple of years. I installed a couple of new servers a couple of months ago. The users that makes use of this service just tried it and couldn't get a response. I checked the server and I hadn't copied the service over. The service is located in a virtual directory under the primary web site.

For example, the site is: [URL] Service virtual directory is "GetITSData" The call to the service has been: [URL] param1, param2, param3, param4 and the service would return the appropriate data. I "assumed" that when I copied the actual contents of the directory over, that the service would then begin functioning again (since it was empty). All IIS snap-in manager items for the virtual directory match the previous settings on the old server (I still have that server available in my office). The main site requires SSL and uses forms authentication. When I create a dummy site in VS2008 and try to add a service reference, I get the following: There was an error downloading [URL]. The request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: [URL]. The remote server returned an unexpected response: (405) Method Not Allowed. The remote server returned an error: (405) Method Not Allowed. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again.

ASMX Service Works On Development Server Returns 404 When Deployed To IIS 7.5?

Mar 24, 2011

I have a web application in ASP.NET 4.0. I've added an asmx service, primarily as a source for the autocomplete extender's lookup values.

When I debug on my machine locally, everything works fine. However, when I deploy the web application to IIS 7.5, I get a HTTP 404 response when trying to send data to the service.

I am able to browse to the service definition, see the available operations. Tellingly, however, when I use the test pages to test the service using POST, I receive an HTTP 404 again.

I'm not sure what is going on. I did create the asmx file within my web application and it is deployed in the virtual directory of my otherwise working production application. Is there an issue with the .asmx file being deployed in the same virtual directory, perhaps?
