WCF / ASMX :: Webservice Timeout With Large Xml-files?
Jul 16, 2010
I have an RSS-reader in one of my webservices. I then utilize the webservice using javascript and everything works fine with small to moderately sized RSS-feeds.
But the webservice keeps timing out when I'm trying to use larger RSS-feeds.
ie. this feed from Youtube: [URL]
Javascript
VideoModule = {
LoadVideos: function () {
var ret = RSSService.GetFeed("http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/base/users/TheOnion/uploads?alt=rss&
[Code]....

My problem is I have handled timeout error in client of WCF error in such a way that if data is large to fetch, after 10 minutes(as all timeout in web config of client are set to 10 minutes) it should show me customize message 'Too many records to fetch, please modify criteria'. It works on my local system as per expected but if I put it in test server(Service is in one test server and Client application in one test server) it gives me following runtime error.
The message could not be processed. This is most likely because the action [URL] is incorrect or because the message contains an invalid or expired security context token or because there is a mismatch between bindings. The security context token would be invalid if the service aborted the channel due to inactivity. To prevent the service from aborting idle sessions prematurely increase the Receive timeout on the service endpoint's binding. The thing is if I set SendTimeout in test server client config less than 20 seconds then it works fine but we should not be limited upto 20 seconds as it is awfully short.

At my place of work, we have an ASP.NET page that uses the following code to perform a file download. We use this rather than Request.TransmitFile() because the file is coming directly from a zip archive.
private void DownloadStream(Stream stream)
{
int bytesRead;
int chunkSize = 1048576; //1MB
byte[] readBuffer = new byte[chunkSize];
while ( (bytesRead = stream.Read(readBuffer, 0, readBuffer.Length)) > 0)
{
if (!Response.IsClientConnected)
break;
Response.OutputStream.Write(readBuffer, 0, bytesRead);
Response.Flush();
}
}
I'm trying to determine a reasonable value for the httpRuntime executionTimeout setting. The files being sent range up to 1GB in size, and some of our users have very slow pipes* to the webserver (think 64K lines). We don't want these users to experience connection resets. However, we want to keep a reasonable timeout value for the rest of the site.
Is there a way to define an executionTimeout setting only for this specific page (or even make it unlimited for that page specifically)? What's the recommended approach? I know we'd probably be better off using a totally different method to serve the files (e.g. FTP), but we don't have the freedom to make that choice. All we can do is modify the code for the site.
Also, I do think these downloads should be compressed before sending, but that's another matter.
*Off-topic question: Is "slow pipe" an annoyingly mixed metaphor? I should probably say "small pipe" instead, but that sounds strange to me in this context. Opinions?

On my page I have a dropdown for country.
On my asmx service I want to get the value of the dropdownlist to filter the next input which will be state/providence.
My code on the asmx:
[Code]....
I want to add another clause to the WHERE statement to restrict Country = @Country so I will need to get that value to the web service.

I have an intranet application that is calling a webservice (code below). The webservice calls a stored procedure in q sql server 2005 that again does an openquery on a db2 (AS400) machine. The stored procedure is returning a temp table. On the call to the webservice I am getting a time out. At this point if time out the web service is still running and I can also see the query is in the program stack on the db2 machine. The query itself can take up to 20-30 minutes as it is reading 3 mill+ records. If I call the web service directly I get the result returned.
Code:
Dim getOrderDetail As New localhost.OrderDetail
myDataTable = getOrderDetail.GetOrderDetailRecords_DataTable(myUserId)

I am building a webservice that reads some HTML source code from a website and sends it back to the client. The service however is failing to send the data because it is too large. I keep getting this error:
The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter [URL]..... The InnerException message was 'There was an error deserializing the object of type iRacingForumServiceTest.ForumService.GetForumListResponseBody. The maximum string content length quota (8192) has been exceeded while reading XML data. This quota may be increased by changing the MaxStringContentLength property on the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas object used when creating the XML reader. Line 153, position 247.'. Please see InnerException for more details.
I have been googling this problem for ages and I cannot figure out how to apply the answers I keep finding.
The problem is simple: the default configuration doesn't allow such large strings. I just don't know how to change this. All I keep finding is things related to WCF, I'm not sure if that applies for me.
What I keep finding is that I need to change the web.config file in various ways. However I cannot figure out where I need to put the config sections. I've tried everything but without a complete web.config file example I can't get it to work
Here is my current web.config of the server:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration>
<configSections>
</configSections>
<connectionStrings/>
<system.web>
[Code] ....
I found this piece to add to it:
Code:
<system.serviceModel>
<services>
<service name="ForumService">
<endpoint address=""
binding="basicHttpBinding"
[Code] ....
I figured out where to put it without getting errors (just as a child of the <configuration> element), but it just doesn't work. I get the same error no matter what values I try here... This shouldn't be such a difficult issue, how can I solve it?

I have spent a couple of days on this one. I have an ASP.NET website that has Linkbuttons on
the Default.aspx page.. I added a WebService to the Website because later on the WebService will
subscribe to a Provider(Feed) of News, Sports and Weather and things like that. So when a Linkbutton
on the Default.aspx page is clicked it will connect to the link in the WebService which will load the News,
Sports or Weather onto the Default.aspx web page.
The problem is I can't get the LinkButton to execute the Link in the WebService. The link will call the page up
to where you see all of the Web References. But then if you want to execute one of those references you
have to click its link and the Invoke button that will follow. My questioh is how can the link on my Default.aspx
page execute the link in the WebService. Now I changed the LinkButton into an <a href> but I still can't execute
the link in the WebServices. I always use www.Microsoft.com as the link when testing and I wasn't sure about the return type
so I put "void" for an HTTPRequest, so below is the link from the Default.aspx web page and below that is he asmx file:

Is there a way of filtering large CSS files for the only required selectors on a page, and creating css files that contain just these selectors?
Case: I have a very large CSS file that I want to filter on a per page basis, so that the file size is cut down and can be cached by mobile devices. I was thinking along the lines of something like a server side dust me selectors tool.The particular project I am working on is using ASP.NET MVC.

How do I increase the allowable time before my WCF request gives up?
My client program executes: -
Recordcount = GDBService.Chartdata1(_ChartType, _FoundIndiid.ToString, Selection, Chartoption, 0, _UserInfo.Userid, _UserInfo.Role)
This invokes an SQL procedure that takes up to 3 minutes to run when invoked from SQL Management Studio with the same argument values.
The default is 30 seconds.
I tried inserting <httpRuntime executionTimeout="300"/>
within the <system.web> section of web.config. This didn't help.
I tried writing this into the client program: -
GDBService.Endpoint.Binding.OpenTimeout = TimeSpan.FromMinutes(5)
Dim start As DateTime = Now
Recordcount = GDBService.Chartdata1(_ChartType, _FoundIndiid.ToString, Selection, Chartoption, 0, _UserInfo.Userid, _UserInfo.Role)
Dim finish As DateTime = Now
I found that Finish was always 30 seconds after Start. Ditto if I set ..."SendTimeout".

I am trying to send System.Data.Datatable from a WCF service, to a C# Windows Forms application. When I execute, I get follwowing message:The maximum message size quota for incoming messages (65536) has been exceededThe datatable I am trying to send can get quite large. What would be the best approach to send the DataTable across without hitting message size limit, or in other words, what are ways around this problem?

I have an asmx web service I am "Upgrading" to WCF. It's function is to pass a DataTable to the Remote Server. It works fine as long as the dataset contains under 20 records(more or less). Anything greater than that returns the error:
The remote server returned an unexpected response: (400) Bad Request
Everything I searched on the web says I need to increase things like maxBufferSize in my Web.Config File, but like so many others, it has produced no results. This seems like it should be a simple fix.
I am using VS 2010 on Windows 7. All Development and debugging is being done on the localhost. What I currently have for my web.Config file is below:

In my web app, if user clicks a button, I have to kick off a long running task. I have to keep the user informed about the status of execution of the task from time to time. To accomplish this, I create a thread on button click which makes a synchronous webservice call. The webmethod works on a long running task; while the main thread informs the users about the status of execution.
Currently the webmethod call times out in approximately 90 seconds. I want to increase the timeout to 10 mins. I tried setting <httpRuntime executionTimeout="600"/> along with debug="false"; but in vein. Can anyone tell me what I am missing?

We use the MojoPortal to a website and have some problems to upload files that is around 100 MB with the upload module. (Pleas note that this has probably nothing to do with MojoPortal but with the ASP.NET and the IIS)
The MojoPortal is set to use regular file Upload(not Neat Uploader) and to be able to upload big files we have set the following :
<httpRuntime maxRequestLength="2097151" executionTimeout="18000" requestValidationMode="2.0"/>
And :
<compilation debug="false" defaultLanguage="C#" targetFramework="4.0">
The problem is that the upload will cacel after a couple of minuts (Aborted).
Is there any other values that I need to set to make this possible? The MojoPortal itself should not have any settings for this as far as I know so its regular ASP.NET 4.0.

Anyone got some good pointers at an open source (article for creating your own would even be better) component to upload large files.SlickUpload for instance works great, and surely worth the money, but as this is for a pet project, a paid solution is just not what I'm after.

I am building a website where i need a page where user can upload large video files, i have created WCF service with streaming but i am calling that WCF service from Button_Click event of web page.
I have used below mentioned article for WCF service creation
WCF Streaming
I have used streaming as it should be efficient and should not be buffered in memory of server.
Now questions
1) I am having doubts that the entire file is uploaded to the web server and then it is transferred to WCF Service server...if this is true then i am not getting advantage of streaming as well as iis and web server will be down very soon if user uploads large file or multiple user are uploading files con currently
2) Is there any other efficient way to do same operation with some other technique
EDIT :
If I am not calling WCF Service method from ASP .Net code in that case also it is transferring bytes to the web server which i have checked with HTTPFox
I have checked above thing with upload control and putting one button on UI whose click event is bound to one method in code behind.
So, still i am having that confusion that how data is transferred
Client Machine - Web Server (ASP .Net Application) - Service Server (WCF Service)
Client Machine - Service Server (WCF Service)
NOTE : If i am putting a debug point on button_click and uploading 10 kb file it hits that in less then 1 sec. but if i am uploading 50 mb file then it is taking time.
I placed code of calling WCF service inside that button_click event

Is there any way I can speed up the WCF response so user does not wait for a longer time?

We have the timeout value set to 120 in our <form> tag within the web.config. We do not have a session timeout set.. and we have various connection strings.
We are having a problem where a session variable will disappear (become NULL) .. but, the form evidently remains 'open'.. or no re-login is required..... so, my question(s):
1. what is the relationship between form timeout and session timeout
2. how do I set session timeout

I'm using a web form that allows users to upload media files. The code works great on small to medium size files, but I've found that if a file is really big(like bigger than 15MB), the user will get a 404 error.
