WCF / ASMX :: Generate Web Service In Web Application Using Existing Code?
Jan 15, 2011Currently I have project in ASP.NET 2.0 and I wanted to implement web services using my existing code.

View 2 Replieswe have an existing ASP.net application that is undergoing expansion. The new functionality is all written in Silverlight 4. As part of that expansion I gutted all the old Linq to SQL and put Entity Framework 4 into place. To do this I created a standard .net Class Library and added my edmx files there. Naturally, the business entities created by this cannot be used in Silverlight. So I created a Silverlight Class Library and added all the business entities to that Silverlight Class Library as linked files. I changed the name space to be the same.
So I have the following assembly / namespaces
Company.Project.Dal.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (.net 4 class library)
Company.Project.Entities.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (SL4 class library)
With this architecture I was able to share my business entities with my SL enabled web services, my asp.net projects, my silverlight projects. Really it's a beautiful thing.
Once this was done I added "message" classes to Company.Project.Dal and again shared them with the other entites using linked files. These messages are things like MyObjectRequest; they are classes that have properties that can set to the ID of the record in the database you want to get, a search string for filtering by last name, first name, etc. (This is in the style of the Web Service Factory if you're familiar with that.)
Finally I turned the whole message into a generic using a base class called EntityRequest

I corrected this error and everything went well for a week until I had to make my first change to the service interface. I added a new operation contract, clicked the handy Update Service Reference on my client and boom.
I have running existing web service in framework 2.0, but i want to convert all my service to framework 3.5 WCF Service..
View 1 RepliesSomeone knows a tutorial for a sql database web service in VB. I need to add tables to a existing web service
View 2 RepliesI added a Web Method to the existing web service. I don't see this method in my web project. I can see all the old methods but I couldn't access this method. Do I have to create proxy for this method?
View 2 RepliesI've been reading quite a few tutorials on web services and xml files and one thing isn't quite clear to me. If I want to create an XML file on the fly the tutorials are pretty straight forward but, I want to grab an existing XML file from the web server and return the whole thing. Do I need to read the XML file and send each individual node or is there a way to send the file all at once? The tutorials imply that the whole file could be a node but I'm not clear on what that entails or if it would work. Also do you have a link to an example?

I have a WCF service which has 4 Operation contracts.
I have added a new contract and it gets the data from database and returns the result set.
I can access the new contract and the service get the correct result set. But while passing the result set to the client I get the error of The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly.
What are the steps to follow after adding a new contract like new binding etc.
i am new to ASP.NET. I am just now learning about all the benefits. I currently have some C# code that receives sensor signals such as distances from a robot and I wish to put that code into web services and into a website, so that if I want to gather some information from the robot i can through the web, as well as send signals back. I haven't found any information yet on how to do this.
I am just looking on how to intergrate the existing C# code I have to a web service
How do I add the WCF service built using VS2010 as a service reference to a Winforms app which is written in VB6?
View 1 RepliesWe have a web service running live. Last week, we pulled the source code down to my machine and successfully built it.
My goal is to become familiar with this code and document it. My problem is that I am not sure how to get it running locally.
First of all, I have to configure it in IIS or something? How do I do that, and is that indeed the right place to begin? I tried creating a consumer in a separate VS solution, and when I said browse for local web services it said "Active Directory Services cannot find the web server."
I tried this link, but got lost when it said "3.Under Visual Studio installed templates, click ASP.NET Web Service." because I don't have that template.
I have an ASMX Web Service that has its code entirely in a code-behind file, so that the entire contents of the .asmx file is:
<%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="~/App_Code/AddressValidation.cs" Class="AddressValidation" %>
On my test machine (Windows XP with IIS 5), I set up a virtual directory just for this ASP.NET 2.0 solution and everything works great. All my code is separated nicely and it just works.However, when we deployed this solution to our Windows Server 2003 development environment, we noticed that the code only compiled when all of the code was dropped directly into the .asmx file, meaning that the solution didn't work with code-behind. We can't figure out why this is happening.
One thing that's different about our setup in our development environment is that instead of creating a separate virual directory just for this solution, we dropped it into an existing directory that runs a classic ASP application. So here we have a folder with an ASP.NET 2.0 application within a directory that contains a classic ASP application. Granted, everything in the ASP.NET 2.0 application works if all of the code is within the .asmx file and not in code-behind, but we'd really like to know why it's not recognizing the code-behind files and compiling it correctly.
how to add the web service in my project and how to use it.
I am planning to use Autocomplete from ajax tool kit which needs a web service. Web service will be prepared and given to me, and i need to use it in my project for autocomplete control.
step by step procedure to add web service in my project and also how can I create a web service if i have to create my own service.
I m retrieving a pdf file from another application using Web service. After retrieving that file, make some validations and after that I want to delete that file. I want to delete that file in another application database. how can I delete that file ? I m unable to code that one. Can anyone give some startup.
View 6 RepliesThing is, when my service is providing result of type string my client .aspx page is working fine and it gives reference in my code. But now I changed my service to provide custom data type and I can't see service reference in my code, intellisense doesn't offer it at all. What am I missing here? WCFTestClient.exe is giving good results but I can't create my own in VS 2008

View 1 RepliesMost WCF web service I have developed were consumed in a server side code (by adding a service reference in visual studio or creating a proxy class using svcutil.exe. I have never consumed a web service in a client code. So I apologize if I am using wrong terminology or my question does not make sense.We have a browser add-on or plugin that connect to a device on client computer (think of it as active-x control for internet explorer) inside a asp.net web page.This browser plugin/add-on then will be sending measurement data to the web server. After some research it appears to me that I can do eithera) Develop an AJAX enabled WCF web service and use script manager and javascript to consume it inside the web page that interact with browser pluginb) Develop a WCF web servcice (not sure about AJAX enable) that serialize request and response to JSON, and use JQuery inside asp.net page to consume it.QuestionWhat's difference between approach a) and b)? Which is better in particular scenario I have described.
View 4 RepliesI am working on WCF Data service which imported stored procedure, as below.
[WebGet]
public List<GetMTSearchResultTest_Result> GettMTSearchResultTest()
{
MediaMarketResearch_PRODEntities ent = new MediaMarketResearch_PRODEntities();
return ent.GetMTSearchResultTest().ToList();
}
when i consuming this in my client application it says error as "The closed type MMRClient.MMRServiceReference.GetMTSearchResultTest_Result does not have a corresponding element settable property." I am getting this error while bind to the grid view as below.
DataServiceContext context = new DataServiceContext(new [URL])); IEnumerable<GetMTSearchResultTest_Result> empResult = context.Execute<GetMTSearchResultTest_Result>(new Uri [URL];
GridView1.DataSource = empResult;
GridView1.DataBind();
Note: I imported this stored proc as complex type.
My WCF Service isnt restarting after the app pool recycles. I have no control over how often the pool is recycled (shared hosting) .How do I get the wcf service to restart on pool-recycle ?
View 1 RepliesWeb service is referenced fine (called "tuWs") and I can refer to it in standard web form code behind:
Dim myWs As tuWebSvc.tuWs = New tuWebSvc.tuWs
I want to create a WCF Service to transfer data to our clients application(WPF). The Data I am trying to send is as follows.
ID Code Description unit Rate
1 104200000 LIVE GOAT NOS 25
2 104200000 LIVE GOAT2 NOS 25
3 104200030 LIVE GOAT3 KGS 10
4 104202030 Water LTR 5
and so on till ~ 11000 records.
What I have done so far is. Created a service which return a list of data.
public List<Classes.TariffData> GetTariffData() { var currentTariffData = new List<Classes.TariffData>(); using (var myConnection = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString)) { const string query = "select a.ID,a.Code,a.Description,a.unit,a.rate,a.rate3 from tariff.dbo.tariffdata a, tariff.dbo.code_history b where a.id = b.id and b.endofvalidity is null"; using (var myCommand = new SqlCommand(query, myConnection)) { using (var ad = new SqlDataAdapter(myCommand)) { var dt = new DataTable("tariff"); ad.Fill(dt); currentTariffData.AddRange(from DataRow row in dt.Rows select new Classes.TariffData { Id = int.Parse(row["Id"].ToString()), Code = row["Code"].ToString(), Description = row["Description"].ToString(), Unit = row["unit"].ToString(), Rate = row["rate"].ToString(), Rate3 = row["rate3"].ToString() }); return currentTariffData; } } } }
Class is as follows
public class TariffData { public int Id { get; set; } public string Code { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public string Unit { get; set; } public string Rate { get; set; } public string Rate3 { get; set; } }
If i Limit the number of data by using const string query = "select top 300 a.ID,a.Code,a.Description. The Service works fine. But if I remove the top 300 part I get an error. What is your advice if I want a service to allow our client applications to update their data by using WCF. (11000 records.) I am using visual Studio 2010. C# .Net 4.0
I have a web service that has a CreateReport method that generates a report based on the specified criteria.
When I call this method Synchronously using a Windows Application or Console Application, the call works fine and the report is created.
When I call this method ASynchronously (CreateReportASync) using Windows Application the report is created.
When I call this method ASynchronously (CreateReportASync) using Console Application the web service does not even get the call.
I am using VS2005 and .Net Framework 2.0. So the proxy is automatically created with the Async methods. I am not really interested the result of the method call, so I do not add a Callback Delegate.
I am trying to post data from vb.net application to web service asmx that is located on server! For posting data from vb.net application I am using this code:
Public Function Post(ByVal url As String, ByVal data As String) As String
Dim vystup As String = Nothing
Try
'Our postvars
Dim buffer As Byte() = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(data)
'Initialisation, we use localhost, change if appliable
Dim WebReq As HttpWebRequest = DirectCast(WebRequest.Create(url), HttpWebRequest)
'Our method is post, otherwise the buffer (postvars) would be useless
WebReq.Method = "POST"
'We use form contentType, for the postvars.
WebReq.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"
'The length of the buffer (postvars) is used as contentlength.
WebReq.ContentLength = buffer.Length
'We open a stream for writing the postvars
Dim PostData As Stream = WebReq.GetRequestStream()
'Now we write, and afterwards, we close. Closing is always important!
PostData.Write(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)
PostData.Close()
'Get the response handle, we have no true response yet!
Dim WebResp As HttpWebResponse = DirectCast(WebReq.GetResponse(), HttpWebResponse)
'Let's show some information about the response
Console.WriteLine(WebResp.StatusCode)
Console.WriteLine(WebResp.Server)
'Now, we read the response (the string), and output it.
Dim Answer As Stream = WebResp.GetResponseStream()
Dim _Answer As New StreamReader(Answer)
'Congratulations, you just requested your first POST page, you
'can now start logging into most login forms, with your application
'Or other examples.
vystup = _Answer.ReadToEnd()
Catch ex As Exception
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)
End Try
Return vystup.Trim() & vbLf
End Function
