I have textbox A, B, C and D. Textbox A is optional, yet B, C and D are not required unless A contains an entry (then they are mandatory). What validation control do I associate with B, C and D that checks for an entry (anything other than being empty) in A? I don't see CompareValidator being able to do this so I was going to use a CustomValidator to perform server side validation (and possibly look into Javascript for server side).
I want the validation condition to be: on a pair of textboxes, to be valid as long as at least one of them isn't empty.
So I put a customvalidator on the 2nd textbox, hooked up to the following server code and client code:

From what I can tell thru breakpoints, this code works fine as long as there's something in one of the two textboxes. When both textboxes are empty, the code is never called - and so both boxes empty ends up being allowed.
So what's the correct way to validate one-or-the-other-nonempty condition?

I have a gridview with two bound fields. On clicking a button i want to display the values in first row of gridview in two textboxes. But if gridview cell is empty i am getting the text in textbox to which the value of cell is given as -' 'i know my problem will be solved if i use the template fields instead. I have a web form and I have a user control on it. This user control contains a panel with some user properties that are to be stored in a database. So far nothing fancy. The user control itself contains a panel and is working fine (all code to retrieve and store the values is working).
I used the default settings of creating a user control and one of them was AutoEventWireup=true. This works fine because I also have some dropdown boxes (and other fields) that need to be filled with values from the database and that happens in the Page_load event.
The panel specifies the 'DefaultButton' which calls a method when clicked to save the values after the user has changed them.
On this click the code of the method is called, I confirmed that, but I found out that the values of my controls on the user control (for example the Textbox control) are empty. As a non-ASP.NET developer I couldn't figure out why. So I changed some settings like AutoEventWireup to false.
Off course this resulted in my dropdown boxes no longer to be initially filled, but my surprise was big to find out my controls actually contained the values the user typed in.
Logically I need both the values and the dropdowns filled, but for now it seems one or the other.
I have a web form on which the user fills in a basic data: date (with drop down lists), an asset class (with a radioButtonList that is bound with en Enum) and other simple controls... The, when the form is submitted, I make a query on the database to retrieve my data and bind these data into a gridView.
The 1st time I submit the form everything is working well, the second time even if I change nothing in in the web form, the GridView1_RowCreated fires an exception when the property AssetClass is called. The error message is
Must specify valid information for parsing in the string.
This is because rblAssetClass.SelectedValue is empty, but I don't understand why.

I have 2 text boxes in which I am comparing the numeric value of one to the other. At first it works fine and I get the appropriate error message. But eventually as i plug in different numbers although I should be getting an error message I stop getting one. Is there something going on behind the scenes to fire the error message than I am unaware of. Also the error message fires some time when the value is less than the value of another control and equal to the value. I only want it to fire when it is less than the value of the other control.
I hv taken 2 panels one for School transport detail , the other for Personal Transport detail.
The validation controls are different for the panels. When selecting 1st panel the other gets disable and on clicking Save button the error msg of 1st panel appears if not entering proper values. But when 2nd panel I am selecting and without entering any value clicking Save button it still giving error msg of 1st Panel yet it is disabled.
