I am developing a new project to list files and directories under an specified location on disk. I use normal methods like Directory.GetFiles() to achieve this task but the amount of files is getting very big (> 300000) and the site is becoming terrible slow.
I worked with Index server with previous versions of Asp.Net but I was wondering if there is a new way for my website running Asp.Net 4.0.
Also I heard something about Index Server is obsolete to achive file listings and search. Is there any new alternative?

I have been looking into using the Entity Framework for our project, but so far keep coming up a number of limitations trying to fit it to the way our databases are structured. Right now we are coding directly to the database through a MySQL connector, so we have full flexibility to do anything possible that SQL can handle. So the first issue I have is that I need the ability to select a different table for an Entity set at runtime, as we have some tables that have suffixes on them based on the 'brand' presented to the user (ie: shopping carts, config variables etc). I found this project on Codeplex that looks like it will allow me to easily solve that problem:[URL]
However I have another problem I need to solve. Our main database is actually re-factored into the core working set database (6 months of data), and archive databases. There is one archive database per year, where orders and other interesting stuff is archived away to get them out of the working set which keeps the database table sizes and server load down. However the problem is, every so often there are valid reasons to dip into the archive tables to pull stuff out and deal with data in the archive tables (to
refund a customer perhaps past 6 months, or to mark an order as fraud 8 months later etc, or just to query sales history for reporting). For our normal code we have structured some smart SQL pre-processing logic that allows us to find stuff across the archives and join it to the primary database. The result is a single query that returns data from either the working set, or any of the archives all at once (and can join stuff to items still in the working set, such as currently active products etc).
I have struggled to determine if there is even any way to represent that kind of thing with the Entity Framework? The schema of the archive databases is identical to the schema of the primary database, except that it only had a limited selection of tables in it (just stuff that needs to be archived). So how can we associate the main database schema with the archive tables, but more importantly be able to run a query across them all? Should I just write a separate schema for each individual archive database (or perhaps I should give up on archiving stuff by year, and just stick all the archives in one DB?)? But if I do that, is there any way in Entity Framework to join across to tables in a different database? Or for the archive database schema, to include references to tables in the main working set database?

I have a folder on my web server that has hundreds of mp3 files in it. I would like to provide the option for a user to download a zipped archive of every mp3 in the directory from a web page.
I want to compress the files programmatically only when needed. Because the zip file will be quite large, I am thinking that I will need to send the zip file to the response stream as it is being zipped, for performance reasons.

I need to develop an application, which will get records (orders) from one application and process them. The updates to this records (order updates) will be sent back to the source application for end customer reference. I'm planning to achieve this data synchronization at the database level using triggers and stored procedures to insert database between the 2 databases.
But, the issue is I have to deploy this application in 3 different customer sites and I have to change the database names (cannot use the same database name) in each deployment manually. Because of this deployment issue, I was thinking of handling this within the asp.net application where I can store the db name in the database and then build the query within the application, but I dont want to do it as building queries like that doesnt look very professional.

I'm experiencing a to me mysterious error when sending e-mails through a SMTP-server from an ASP.NET web application. I get the famous error "unable to relay for xxx@yyy.zzz". What's mysterious to me is that when I cut and paste the exact same code that sends the e-mail into an usual .NET Windows Forms application, send the e-mail with this application, it all works just fine. This made me think that perhaps the problem is that the ASP.NET application runs as NETWORK SERVICE while the Windows Forms application runs on a domain user account, but it turns out that I have another ASP.NET application sending e-mail through the same SMTP-server running under NETWORK SERVER at the same IIS, and this application does not experience this problem.
I've further tried to send e-mails through the SMTP-server manually by telnet the smtp-server on port 25 and running the SMTP-protocol manually, and it all works fine. The SMTP-server is not configured with any kind of authentication or SSL.
Another mysterious fact is that the ASP.NET application can send e-mails from an adress within the same domain to an e-mail adress within the same domain, but not to any adress outside of the domain. But the Windows Forms application, that uses the exact same code, can send e-mails from any adress to any adress both within AND outside of the domain.
So to summarize:
The ASP.NET application can send
e-mails from addresses within the
domain to adresses within the domain,
but not to addresses outside of the
domain.
A Windows Forms application running
the same code on the same computer
can send e-mails from ANY address to
ANY address.
Another ASP.NET application on the
same IIS running under the same
account (NETWORK SERVICE) can send
e-mails using the same SMTP-server
from ANY adress to ANY adress.
There is no authentication configured
on the SMTP-Server.
Both the ASP.NET application and the
Windows Forms application utilizes
the System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient class
to send a
System.Net.Mail.MailMessage.
The code that sends the e-mail massage is:
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MailMessage mesasge = new MailMessage(txtFrom.Text, txtTo.Text, "Test mail", txtBody.Text);
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient();
if (!(string.IsNullOrEmpty(txtUserName.Text))) //Is false since txtUserName.Text is empty
client.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text);
client.EnableSsl = false;
client.Host = txtServer.Text;
client.Port = 25;
try
{
client.Send(mesasge);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
txtResponse.Text = ex.Message;
}
}
As far as I can understand, this should be a matter of configuration rather than coding issues.

We have an ASP.NET 3.5 Web application in which we have faced the below issue:
The application is working fine but suddently at one point application URL prompts for the authentication. When we (the support team) checked the server, we were able to identify that the access was denied for some of the main files (like web.config, default page). When we enabled the access the application started working fine.

I have a simple windows form app that I need to get the file path for. I am placing a config file in the same directory and I need to be able to get the path to that file.
I have used
Application.CommonAppDataPath
but that returns the path with 1.0.0.0 at the end.
and
Applicaiton.StartupPath
but that returns the path with indebug at the end
Is there anyway to get the path to just the main file directory without anything appended to the end?

why is it that the exact same codes that i use to create a Windows application, which is able to work, does not work on a Web application? i created a windows application using c# and socket programming language. i will be connected to a remote server and through the windows application, and i will be able to send the "byte[] msg" to the server and activate the LED lightbulbs attached to the remote server. that exact same codes works well on the Windows application. however, when i create another Web application using the same exact codes, i does not have any error yet i am not able to activate the LED lightbulbs attached to it. is it that through the web or internet explorer i am not able to send the "byte[] msg" correctly? or that i sld modify "byte[] msg" to suit the web usage? or any other reasons?

My web application goes onto several client servers and I wrote a simple VB6 app that when run downloads relevant files and copies them into the directory.If I wanted the web application to perform this update can I assume this is impossible, i.e. FTP the files and copy them accordingly?Also I am now pre-compiling my site each time using the aspnet_compiler and this seems to update every page, do I need to copy each page every time or simply the ones I've changed.
