View 1 RepliesI have a page where I display ASP.NET charts. There are two types of charts and I felt the need to separate them to some extent which I did by using a submenu which looks like this:
Charts > Goals Charts
> Reconciliation Charts
Clicking on either of the two chart links will take you to the same Charts.aspx page, but with the query string "Goals" or "Reconciliation" respectively. On the page load of the Charts.aspx page, I receive the query string into a session variable and create the correct charts based on that value. All of this works fine.
The problem I'm experiencing occurs when I open up a new tab in IE/Firefox. Here is the series of events I'm experiencing:
- In the original tab, I will click on the "Goals Charts" hyperlink which loads the Charts.aspx page with "Goals" as the charts type session value. The other controls on the page needed to produce "Goals" charts (eg. drop down lists, etc) are displayed correctly ie. the "Goals" version. At this point, I haven't done anything in this tab except for loading the Charts.aspx page from the "Goals Charts" link.
- In the original tab, I right click the "Reconciliation Charts" link and opt to open in a new tab (I just tested and the same thing appears to be working if you opt to open in a new window as well). When the new tab loads the Charts.aspx page, it loads with the query string "Reconciliation" which it stores in the session variable. So at this point I would expect to have two different, independent tabs: the original tab on the "Goals Charts" track and the second tab on the "Reconciliation Charts" track.
- This is where the problem occurs. I would expect the original tab/window to create a "Goals" chart when I make a selection using the other controls and I would expect the second tab/window to create a "Reconciliation" chart. The problem, however, is that when I go back to the original tab/window - the one which should be a "Goals" chart and which should have "Goals" stored in the session value - when I proceed to create a chart, it's a Reconciliation chart that is created.
Somehow, even though I'm in a different tab or window and I am navigating the site seemingly independently of the other tab/window, it seems to be carrying the most recently populated value from the session variable for both tabs/windows.
I have ASP.net application that is basically a data entry screen for a physical inspection process. The users want to be able to have multiple browser windows open and enter data from multiple inspections concurrently. At first I was using cookie based sessions, and obviously this blew up.I switched to using cookie-less sessions, which stores the session in the URL and in testing this seemed to resolve the problem. Each browser window/tab had a different session ID, and data entered in one did not clobber data entered in the other.
However my users are more efficient at breaking things than I expected and it seems that they're still managing to get the same session between browsers sometimes. I think that they're copying/pasting the address from one tab to the other in order to open the application, but I haven't been able to verify this yet (they're at another location so I can't easily ask them).Other than telling them don't copy and paste, or convince them to only enter one at a time, how can I prevent this situation from occurring?
I have an ASP.NET/C# application that exports some data into an Excel spreadsheet using COM interop at the click of a Button control. When I click the button, Excel is opened with the generated spreadsheet. For what it's worth, here is the button code:
<asp:Button ID="export" Text="Export to spreadsheet" runat="server" OnClick="Export_Workbook" />
This works fine, except when I click the button, close the subsequent spreadsheet, and refresh the page. When the page is refreshed after clicking the button, the call to Export_Workbook() is made again and so the spreadsheet opens again. Firefox, for example, says this when you refresh: "To display this page, Firefox must send information that will repeat any action (such as a search or order confirmation) that was performed earlier." This is something I want to avoid.
I'm sure there's a better way to accomplish what I'm trying to do, I'm just not sure what the best approach is.
Edit
I've accomplished this by doing the following:
protected void Export_Workbook(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Response.Redirect(Request.Url.AbsolutePath, false);
ItemList.Prepare_Workbook();
}
So its a ASP.NET problem where two users using the same machine, same browser:
User 1 logs in the domain.
User 1 changes some data without saving it.
User 2 logs in the domain in a separate tab.
User 1 switches back to his tab and saves the data.
User 1 actually saved the data into User 2!!
This is caused by the following mechanism:
Different tabs in the same browser seems to share the same session id.
We are storing user auth in cookie and the cookie is shared between tabs (same domain)
Therefore, when User 1 request to save, it is recognized as User 2 since the cookie has been updated to User 2.
So I'm wondering if there's any other methods to prevent this from happening, other than:
1. Use cookieless session so the session is embedded in uri.
2. Always include a hidden field in page to indicate which user owns the page.
I'm trying to create new tabs within page. When I click a link in my navmenu, it should open the Redirected page in a new tab within the page as new tab (not the browser tab). It is something like the visual studio, where we get the page opened inside a new tab when you click an item in the Solution explorer. Would any body let me know how to implement this functionality. (generate tab with close functinality). I m not talking about TabStrip.

Is there a way to differentiate multiple tabs or windows in IE8? Using this information I want to uniquely identify tab/window where the web request is coming from.

What I wonder how it is possible to do, is how to open up 1 browser window with 2 Session Tabs where 1 Tab is [URL]
How can this be possible to do from code behind (C#)?

We have this great asp.net web application that generates word documents (wordprocessingML) and saves them to the file system on the server. We are running IIS 6.0. I would like to know the best way to allow the user to click a link or something so they can open the document from the browser. I have been experimenting with the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word object, but am getting an error when I try to active the application object. I don't know if using this object is the best approach or if I should be doing something else.

I am making a small file hosting website, and each user can upload multiple files, and will have access to just his files and can't access others files, for example by guessing the URL. Is there a way to secure files to have access by just the owner and no body else "may be website administrator also will have access"

This code opens me a dialog box with Ok and Cancel button but it do not wait for user activity and post the page immediately and the label gets populated. I need to call the c# function based on user activity. If user clicks "Ok" label should get populated and if user clicks "Cancel" it should not call the c# function. How do I achieve this?
any page that I open in my browser comes up blank.
I don't get any errors, it just comes up blank.
I also noticed that it seems to bypass forms authentication. For example, even though the page I open is blank, it is the actual page name that shows up in the browzer instead of the page that it usually redirects to for the forms authentication.

Is it possible to open a PDF always in a browser? That is no Download option will be provided by browser as a user will try to open that pdf file. My application is in ASP.NET (C#).
View 5 RepliesDeveloping a web application in C# which stores files in a tree structure in a server.
A project ( eg: ABC) has many sub folders (eg: ABC_sub1,ABC_Sub2...etc) . Each sub folder will have many types of files. (Eg: .dat,.txt .... etc)
I have stored the project name and the path to the parent folder ( in this case ABC) in a database.
Eg: \sereverNameTestMyProjectABC
What I need to do is when a user selects a given project ( eg; ABC) & clicks the link button component called "browse" to open the folder (\sereverNameTestMyProjectABC) in a new window.
This is the code I thought would work.
protected void LinkButtonFolderBorwse_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string myPath = @HiddenFieldFolderLocation.Value;
System.Diagnostics.Process prc = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
prc.StartInfo.FileName = myPath;
prc.Start();
}
HiddenFieldFolderLocation.Value gets the path of the parent folder (\sereverNameTestMyProjectABC).
When I click the link button nothing happens.
i have issue with browser close prompt;
"the webpage you are viewing is trying to close the window"
in ie6 i prevent this by using coding
self.opener = this;
self.close();
in ie7 and ie8 i prevent this by using coding
window.open('', '_self', '');
window.close();
but, problem is which code will prevent for all brower(ie6,7,8) asking the message.
The web app in question provides a UI for editing a client (in the business sense, not the browser sense), identified by a ClientID. I store the ClientID in Session, which gets passed from page to page, along with a number of other pieces of data in Session. Works great.
The problem is that if the user opens a new browser window using Ctrl N or File->New Window (in IE), the new window comes up with the same page as the current page, with the same session info. Then if the user navigates to a different client in the 2nd window, the ClientID in session refers to the new client. If they go back to the original browser window and save, the original client gets saved using the 2nd ClientID, and all hell breaks loose, because now the data from the two jobs are intertwined.
I have enabled trace and verified that the new browser window uses the same SessionID as the original. If an entirely new instance of IE is opened, it has a different SessionID, so is not a problem. I have not yet investigated other browsers, such as Chrome or Firefox.
Is there any way to determine if a browser instance is opened for a web app which is already open in another window or tab? Or to prevent that from happening?
