Mar 4, 2010Our application uses the Enterprise Library's PropertyProxyValidator class to validate user input (v4.1 - Oct 2008). On occassion, the code will raise an exception saying the source type cannot be found. This error persists until the application pools recycle at night, at which point everything works again. It tends to only affect one of the web front ends at a time (there are two). I tracked down where the exception was being raised, and this is the section of code:

(As you can see, the value for this.SourceTypeName is shown in the exception and I've checked that it matches exactly.)
We have never been able to reproduce this exception and at this point don't have any ideas left as far as causes. For a while, my suspicion was that it was related to the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder. The last time the error occurred, I copied that folder from both web front ends. Then the next day when things were back to normal, I copied the folders. When I did a directory and file comparision of the affected web front end, I found no differences.
Our application is essentially user controls hosted in web parts on SharePoint (they don't do anything with SharePoint - in fact, for a while, we were developing the controls on ASPX pages). There are two servers in the farm, both with Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64, IIS 6, and .NET v3.5. This issue doesn't strike me as a problem with Enterprise Library or SharePoint, hence why I've posted here, but more so with assembly loading.
Any ideas for causes would be greatly appreciated. I could also use suggestions on tools I could use to try and debug this when happens again (it happens 2-3 times a month) in production.
C# - GetType() With WebUserControl Not Working
Feb 9, 2011In the project I have some custom WebUserControls for form elements (they encapsulate some standard validators and other system specific functions). My user controls are "DropDownListField" and "TextBoxField". In the code behind of a page I have this code:

parameterValue = ((DropDownListField)control).Value;
if (control.GetType() == typeof(TextBoxField))

For some reason the "if" statements always return false even when I step through the code and see that "control" is getting assigned my web user control. This code is in another place in the project exactly the same except in the other location the standard .net controls "TextBox" and "DropDownList" are used and in the other location the code works. why this wouldn't work with web user controls?
UPDATE: Hmm so in debugging I found this:
?control.GetType();
BaseType: {Name = "DropDownListField" FullName = "WebUI.UserControls.Fields.DropDownListField"}
?typeof(DropDownListField);
BaseType: {Name = "UserControl" FullName = "System.Web.UI.UserControl"}
So typeof is just recognizing they are user controls not the full type it seems. how I would check for a specific user control type?

I would rather have this catch-all error handled on the page, but for SOAP exceptions (web-service calls) I need to log the details of the actual exception that occured on the server, not the client.
The ".Detail.InnerText" property isn't in a generic exception, and can only be gotten after casting a generic exception to a SOAP exception.

I would think there is a way to get at the underlying Exception's type without using string comparison.

This works by placing the content page specific title on the page ("My Page" in this example). Now I want to add a global prefix to the title in my master page for the site name. So I want:

However, when I do this content pages are still rendered without "Example.com" in the tile, it's like it's ignored.

The login.aspx page uses a master page and styles in a stylesheet located in a folder off the root directory called 'Styles'. I have also add the following to my config file.

When the page displays, the login page displays with the master page content, however all of the styles are missing. When I embed styles into the master page the styles show properly, so I know the problem is that the styles are not being accessed from the file. how I can authorize access to the stylesheet?

The User Control has a textbox in it and the focus needs to be on this newly created control textbox each time. It all works almost perfectly however when there are too many controls to fit on the page, because I set the focus to the textbox the bottom of the page is set to the textbox that has focus not the very bottom of the page. I have a submit button below this which ends up below the page limit. How can I set focus to a textbox but still scroll to the every bottom of the page to show the submit button.

Oct 4, 2010I have a web page which has about 11 gridviews.Hence the page takes bout 15 seconds to load.The grids are 1 below the other.They are populated at the page load.
I need a solution to reduce page load time. Is there a way,where the gridview loads only if user scrolls to it. I donot want the user to make selection for everytime he wishes to see a gridview. The page should show gridview if its data is bound to it, not waiting for entire page gridviews to get populated.
