Web Forms :: Populate Textbox Using SQL Database Query / Depending On A Dropdown List Selection
Apr 8, 2010
I would like to alter the query that is run, depending on the selection made by the user in a drop down list on the same page. Would this best be done using a partial page update (AJAX)? Ideally it would be great to have the textbox result change quickly once the drop-down list value has changed, without a full page postback. I would like to change the SQL query to a completely different query if the user selects an option different to the default (page_load value) in the drop-down list. I would then like the newly retrieved result to be displayed in the textbox as before.
My current VB function looks like this:

I would like the user to select an item from a drop down list. Next to the drop down is a textbox or label control. From the ddl selection I would like to populate the textbox or label from a database with a corresponding field from the database the dropdownlist was populated from. On selectindexchange event I can populate the textbox with the Unique id from the value, but I need to input a different field into the textbox. Can I use some sort of variable to assign the Textbox.Text = ?

I have a dropdown list with the names of the months listed in it. These names are stored as int values but converted to string for display purpose. I also have a RadDatePicker control that will allow the user to select a specific date to overwrite the default date. The default date in the textbox needs to be set to the last day of the month selected (i.e. May 2010 would default to 05/31/2010).

I'm stuck with a problem to populate a DropDownList control with values from the database using item field template in read only mode. since I'm new to ASP.NET. Below is the code and the error I'm getting:
'PictureReadOnlyCategories' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. Parameter name: value Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: 'PictureReadOnlyCategories' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. Parameter name: value
The code for this is :
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="categoriesDataSource" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand ="SELECT [CategoryID], [Name] FROM [Categories] WHERE ([UserId] = @UserId)">

I am trying to bind a record to a textbox using a Dropdown selected index change. I get the error.
Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'DrFirstName DrLastName,Ph.D.' to data type int. is it because I concatenate the name and prefix of the DR into the Dropdown list like this,
Code:
SELECT ID,EmailAddress, DrName + ',' + PreFix AS DrName FROM DrNames
Here is the dropdownlist code that I want to populate the textbox with the emailaddress in the table associated with Dr name and ID.
Code:
Private Sub DropDownList1_SelectedIndexChanged(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles DropDownList1.SelectedIndexChanged
Dim dt As New DataTable()
If DropDownList1.SelectedItem.Text = "OTHER,..." Then
txtRx1.Visible = True
DropDownList1.Visible = False
End If

I have an application as: SelectCommand="SELECT [CategoryID], [Name], [UserId] FROM [Categories] WHERE ([UserId] = @UserId) ORDER BY [Name]">
</asp:SqlDataSource>
Pick a category: <asp:DropDownList ID="categories" runat="server" AutoPostBack="True"
DataSourceID="categoriesDataSource" DataTextField="Name" [code]...
When i take away the <SelectParameters>
<asp:QueryStringParameter Name="CategoryID" QueryStringField="ID" />
</SelectParameters> and ([UserId] = @UserId), the dropdown list control will populate values from the database but when i live those 2, it won't populate any value from the database. When i remove the <asp:QueryStringParameter Name="CategoryID" QueryStringField="ID" />
</SelectParameters>,and live ([UserId] = @UserId), i get the error : Must declare the scalar variable "@UserId".

This is my first post as a newbie to asp.net.
I am in the process of creating a "news system", you can add, edit and delete news. The news items can be entered into the SQL database and you select a category where you want the news item to go into.
What I want is when someone comes to the "Edit" screen, they have a drop down list and what that does is allows you to select a category for you to edit news items from, so rather than at present having the "Edit" page display all the news items, I want people to be able to choose a category that they can edit news items in.
So far my edit page has a datagrid with the following code:

Basically I want to populate a drop down list with time slots for a user to select. If the time slot is already recorded in the database table I want to skip that one so it doesn't display as a selection in the drop down list.
So my drop down list looks like;

And then I have setup a datasource (even though I may get rid of it to bind in the code behind file)

i've run into small problem, here's the thing: i've got a dropdown list (ddlist1) that i am populating from a database, that works fine. However, depending on the option selected here, i need to populate another dropdown list (ddlist2). for example, if on ddlist1 i select option 1, on ddlist 2 i should get a list of options related to option 1 from ddlist1. If i select option 2, on ddlist 2 i should get a list of options related to option 2 from ddlist 1. and so forth. this information with which ddlist needs to be filled, comed from another database. o how can i go about this? m not sure yet how to code the second ddlist.

I'm designing my own custom control that contains a .NET dropdownlist. What I'm wondering is if it is possible to populate my dropdownlist with listitems placed in a placeholder? For example:
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlFilter" runat="server" >
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="ListItemPlaceholder" runat="server"/>
</asp:DropDownList>
This doesn't work because the DropDownList control only allows ListItems as child controls. But, I want to do something similar to this so when the user includes my control on a page, they can do something like this:
<mytag:MyControl Mode="DropDown" runat="server">
<ListItemTemplate>
<asp:ListItem Text="C" Value="c"></asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Text="E" Value="e"></asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Text="B" Value="b"></asp:ListItem>
</ListItemTemplate>
</myTag:MyControl>
I know I can do this by dynamically adding the ListItems in the page code behind, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

I am using a dataset control and I have 5 dropdown lists in which their content depends on what item is selected in each dropdown list.
I know I can populate the lists with 5 different queries taking the variables from each list but I am thinking there must be a better way.
Is there a way to populate each list with one query that takes the distinct items from each column returned without looping through the entire recordset?

I have a DDL and ASP.NET Textbox. I would like to populate the text box with the option I choose from the DDL. I need this to be instant and not use postbacks so it would seem JavaScript would be the obvious choice here. I have done quite a bit of searching but everything I have found seems to be for standard HTML (Selects and Inputs) and these do not appear to work with ASP objects:
<asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="DDLSalesPerson" DataValueField="keyid" DataTextField="FullName" />
<asp:TextBox runat="server" id="txtSalesPerson" />
My DDL is populated from SQL in the code-behind page.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to display a gridview based on the selection of a drop down list. I manually entered the drop down list items, but in the configure/choose data source I don't understand how you make a relationship between each list item and the corresponding database table you want to show.
