I want to implement an image gallery in asp.net/C#. I am using sql server 2008, visual studio 2010 and .NET 4.0.
I have made a webpage and now want to display 6 images as thumbnails (and their names just below the thumbnails) at the center of the page. The format of the display is something like this:
[Code]....
Basic operation is like this:
I pull images from a database and then display them as above as thumbnails. The 1 2 3 Next> are links depending on whether there are more than 6 images pulled from the DB. So basically the numbering 1 2 3 4 Next> is dynamic depending on how many images exist. Can anyone give me a basic overview of how this an be achieved? Should I be using a asp:Repeater or a asp:DataList for this kind of a display?

I have 2 xml documents that I need to find the difference and then save it back to an xml file. I already have the code to get the difference, I am just lost on how to save the IEnumerable back to xml. I tried to stuff it into an XDocument, but got a conversion error.
Code:
Dim xDoc As XDocument = XDocument.Load("doc1.xml")
Dim xDoc2 As XDocument = XDocument.Load("doc2.xml")
Dim result = xDoc2.Descendants("Contact").Except(xDoc.Descendants("Contact"))
'Tried this but It blew up.
Dim resultDoc As XDocument = result
resultDoc.Save("result.xml")
Am I going to have to rebult the xml document and manually add the elements? Or does LINQ support converting back to the same schema?

I have alway tested/debugged my web applications by using f5 to "Start Debugging". Recently (yesterday) I have begun to start without debugging then attach the debugger to the webdev process if I needed to set breakpoints or anything. So far I haven't noticed much of a performance increase when not using the debugger. I am curious about how others save time when running locally.

I have a web page that when the user presses the "Go Back" button, if the formview is not in ReadOnly mode, to ask if they want to exit without saving.
I was thinking of having a pop-up window to ask this question, but I am unsure of how to do this.

I have an .aspx page that displays a crystal report. I have tested this over multiple PCs, most of it displays my report correctly, however, there are a few (minority) particular PCs, instead of showing the report, the Save As dialog is prompted to save "Report.aspx", which is the aspx of which the crystal report is displayed on.
Crystal reports, Microsoft Reporting, and all relevant softwares are installed on all PCs, what could be the issue here? Some IE setting?

I have written a website and let the user upload their photo. It also resizes the picture to 400 x 400 and crops automatically to the center part of the picture. All of this works good but each file is about 355K each for JPG and PNG file formats. I just tried GIF and it is 49K but the picture is grainy when saved this way. Is there any way I can get the picture to a smaller file size with keeping it at 400 x 400? I really thought PNG would be the way to go and was surprised by it being the same as jpg. I don't want to lower the quality either for JPG files.

My page (which basically contains a pair of Repeaters) renders and is displayed to the user.I'd like to have a "Download" button on the page which, when clicked, will propmt the user to save the page locally as an html file without losing any of the CSS formatting.
My CSS files are linked to via a Master Page.Currently, I have the button linked to some javascript that open will the Save As dialog, but all of the CSS formatting is lost, and it saves the page .I'm assuming that the button will need to open a new page which will re-create the data for the Repeaters and then save using StreamWriter, but I'm not exactly sure if that's right or how best to do it.

I was thinking about the fastest way to retrieve a "set" of objects related to a specific user. For instance, if I was to create a website similar to Flickr where people upload lots and lots of photos(jpegs) what would be the fastest way to be able to retrieve those photos from the SQL Server database. Scenario 1: You store metadata about each file they upload to the website as a single row in a database table. Then when you want to retrieve a specific users uploaded files you simply scan the database file for every row matching the UserID and store them in memory.
SELECT PictureId, UserId, PathToFile, Caption, (etc.)
FROM Photos
WHERE UserId=@UserId
This, of course, gets all the information about all the photos a single user has uploaded. My concern with this approach is when the user activity goes from a few thousand to being in excess of a million.
This approach seems fine for a small website but does this method work for a million plus user website like Flicker or MySpace? When you have a million users and millions more photos does this approach still perform at acceptable speeds?
create a collection in memory of "ALL" the PictureIds' for a single user and store them in-memory, in a collection and then save this collection as a single VARBINARY(MAX) field in the SQL Server Database. So instead of having to find multiple records in the Photos database you would simply need to find one, which would include all the PhotoIds' that belong to the user. In essence, translating into the phrase, "If you find one, you have found them all". And improving server performance by leaps and bounds. I only have about a year experience in working with SQL Server and ASP.NET so Im not sure if this solution is practical, if its already been tried, if it can be done.

I'm offering a course and exam online. In the course I want to disable the save as. (When the user clicks save as it should save a blank page). I did it for printing as follows:
Code:
<style type="text/css" media="print">
BODY {display:none;visibility:hidden;}
</style>
I searched online and couldn't come up with anything. E/o just talks about how bad it is to do that. I know it's not secure and there are many ways to get around it, but for the average user it'll be good.

I have issues when developing under Visual Studio 2010 and getting the favicon.ico to display. I have used favicons in production sites (sites running on Windows Server 2008, for example) and have no issues. But when I try to get it to display when testing new code under Visual Studio 2010, then I have difficulties getting it to display. Then sometimes it will display just fine with no assistance (see next paragraph). Before anyone says it...Yes, I have a file in the root directory called "favicon.ico". No, it will not display (in certain projects) when the site is run under VS2010...UNLESS I TREAT THE URL IN THE BROWSER THE SAME AS WHEN RUNNING UNDER FIDDLER2. That is to say, it will only work if I add a period character (.) in the url after the "localhost" entry [URL]. This url will cause the favicon to display every time. If I leave out the period (.), then the favion will not display -- and Fiddler2 will also not display the activity when the page is displayed/refreshed. As I said, this is a sporadic issue. I have some projects where the favicon displays fine. Then I have others where it does not...unless I put the period in the url after the locahost word. Can someone explain to me why:
(a) The period is required in the url to get Fiddler2 to "catch" the activity;
(b) Why does this same phenomenon affect the favicon as well; and,
(C) Why do some projects display the favicon fine when run under VS2010 WITHOUT the period being added?
I just do not understand what the period character in the url string is actually causing to happen and why it doesn't happen when it's missing.
