how can i display the text of the blank field but the insert val is empty.

I have a form and stored procedure that inserts the data from the form. It works fine except that if a field isn't filled in it doesn't insert a NULL into sql it inserts "".

i was able to implement a gridview with insert, edit and delete features, but I NEED to be able to display an empty row for insert even if the select statement returns no row. How do I do that?

View 2 RepliesI have a aspx page with a ascx control inside an ascx control and the required field validator is not hit on the action of the page.
The issue is with the 2nd nested ascx control. The field validators in the first ascx control validate correctly, but with the ascx control inside the ascx control there are issues.
The nested ascx control is a repeater control and this may be the reason, but I am unsure.
I'm not exactly sure what question to ask, but I'll list a few below.
How do I attach the field validators up a level to the 1st ascx control?
Is it possible to put required fields into a nested ascx control?
I have a listview control bound to an SqlDataSource. As part of the formatting I want to add a title to the data returned from my database. For instance if the data base returns a phone number I want to add 'Tel.' first. However I do not want to diplay this
title if the datafield is empty. Here is what I have done so far.

In my detailsview, I have an emptydatatemplate set up to allow users to enter new records. The code works. However, once the record is inserted, the detailsview defaults to a standard insert screen. I know this will cause confusion for the users. I would prefer the detailsview to either show in edit mode or a read-only mode. I have used detailsview.changemode and detailsview.currentmode in the custom sub created for the add new button of the emptydatatemplate- neither of which do what I was hoping. It would be even better if when there was no data, it defaulted to the insert screen (which seems like that should be an easy, no-brainer way for .net to function) but it doesn't. Or, I don't know how to accomplish it.
I don't want to force the user to click cancel after inserting an item through the emptydatatemplate just to be able to use the detailsview for other records.

I Add a TemplateField "Insert Row" button to insert 1 blank row at selected row using Rows.AddAt.First time i press "Insert Row", it works as expected, the row inserted at selected row. now i press another "Insert Row", the row is inserted, however the row (in first time inserted) now move to the last row. and so on.

If a user dosen't fill in a field when data is sent to the database it's sent as blank, instead of NULL. Is there a way I can generically say "for all textboxes if Equals("") then DBNull.Value". View 4 RepliesFor ASP.NET, I'm using a DetailsView for insert and edit of a record. For edit mode I don't want to display the primary key field because it should not be changed. For insert mode, I want to display the primary key field because it doesn't exist and the user can specify it via a DropDownList that insures they will pick an unique value. A TemplateField is used in the DetailsView markup for the primary key field (hence the DropDownList for insert mode).
My problem is that I cannot get the primary key field to not display for edit mode and to display for insert mode. In the markup I have:

With the TemplateField Visible="True", the HeaderText="name" always displays which I don't want for edit mode. With the TemplateField Visible="False", the field never displays which I don't want for insert mode.How can I achieve the display behavior I want for insert verses edit mode.
