In my project requirement user wants to enter a manual entry if they can not find an item in the drop down list.
Right now what I am doing is:
I set the dropdown list autopost back true and on selectedchanged event I am hiding the drop down list and showing a text box to enter a manual entry...
This is working perfect and no problems..
but the drop down list needs to change to a text box on only selecting a "unknown" option in the list...all other list items are doing unnecessary post back to the server with no use...

Clicking the label of a drop down list, re-sets the selected value to the first item in the list. This has a history of causing data entry problems when users accidently click on the label.
In the below example ddlContactType has a selected value as 'PRIMARY' and whenever i click on the lblContactType Text, the dropdown box Selected value is changing to "Select One" Text.
How to prevent this one. It should be on PRIMARY Only.
<p>
<tr> <td ><asp:Label ID="lblContactType" Font-Bold="true" Text="Contract Type: *" ForeColor= "red" runat="server" AssociatedControlID="ddlContactType"></asp:Label> </td> <td > <asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="ddlContactType" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource2" AppendDataBoundItems="true"
DataTextField="TYPE" DataValueField="ID" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("CONTACT_TYPE_ID") %>'>
<asp:ListItem Text="Select One" Value="0" Selected="True"></asp:ListItem>.......

Suppose I have a list of a couple of thousand organizations and a user needs to be able to select one of them. The list is too large to populate in a dropdown at page load, and the user often knows what they want but it's not the first part of the organization name. That is, they know "Collections" but not that the precise name of the organization is "Department of Collections". So the user will need/want to type in some information.
It's easy enough to use an autocompleting textbox of some kind, but I don't want to allow the user to type in random text - they have to choose one of the organizations explicitly.

I am trying to set the item that is selected from a drop down list based on what it in the database for that particular record. I am filling the dropdown list with a SQL DataSource I have tried a couple of example that I have found for selecting the item in the list but I am always getting the first item in the list as the selected item. This is what I am currently working with:
Code:
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
If IsPostBack Then
Else
Dim ID = New Guid(Request.QueryString("ID"))

I have written the piece of code below to get a productID from a gridView when the user clicks on the select link.
Convert.ToInt32(GridView1.SelectedDataKey.Values["productID"])))
However, if a user clicks on this more than one click the newer value replaces the previous. Is there a way to keep adding to the cart list when the user clicks on a new item?
Edit:
Here's my code for the Shopping Page:
[Code]....
I dont know if the location of creating the list is important? Wasn't sure if it was placed in the click event if it would keep creating a new instance?
Then for the Basket Page I have:

I have been facing this problem for a while now, what I exactly want to do is ->
I have a 3- Tier Application. For a table (say Employee) I have following classes in my BLL and DAL
1. Employee.cs (Contains database fields as properties)
2. EmployeeKeys.cs
3. EmployeeFactory.cs (Main BLL which make call to DAL method)
4. EmployeeDAL.cs (The DAL)
Suppose I have 6 columns in Employee table.
I know that the DAL returns List<Employee> to the BLL and then the BLL in turn gives me the Employee fields.
I have no problem accesing it.
But suppose I have a dropdownlist control and wish to bind EmplyeeName and EmployeeId with the Dropdown.
Is there any way that I can implement that my DAL returns a Generic list containing only the two fields required to bind the Dropdown.
In short i want my list to return only 2 columns, not all the 6 like the List<Employee>
How do i implement this???
Do I need to create a custom List<CustomEmployeeData>, if so how can i implement it in the 3 tier application.
Basically i m looking to increase the efficiency by getting less data from database. Am i on the right track????

I have a drop down list control populated with items and some code to take the currently selected item value. The problem is I only get the value of the first item in the list regardless of what item is actually selected. Here is my code to populate the drop down:
protected void displayCreateCategories()
{
StoreDataContext db = new StoreDataContext();
var a = from c in db.Categories
orderby c.Name
select new{catName= c.Name,
catId=c.CategoryID};
ddlCategory.DataSource = a;
ddlCategory.DataTextField = "catName";
ddlCategory.DataValueField = "catId";
ddlCategory.DataBind();
}
To get the value of the currently selected item which in my case is always of type integer I do label1.text=Convert.toInt32(ddlCategory.SelectedValue); I get the selected value, but it is always for the 1st item in the list. I'm pulling my hair out over this.

I am trying to preselect an item in a drop down list box based upon a value I pass in from a data reader. When I place a "Watch" on the drop down list box, the code I am listing below says that it does what it is supposed to and sets the "selected item" to the one I want BUT when the page is rendered and comes up the first item is always selected. It is like it loses the set when the page is loaded or something.
Here is the code....
<td style="width:33%"><asp:Label CssClass="formlabel" ID="lblRU" runat="server" Text="Reporting Unit: "> </asp:Label> <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlRepUnitTeam" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataValueField="MR_LU_TEAMS_PK" DataTextField="MR_LU_TEAMS_NAME"> </asp:DropDownList> </td> <%
For Each item As ListItem In ddlRepUnitTeam.Items
If item.Text = myReader.GetString(0) Then ' ddlRepUnitTeam.Visible = False
item.Selected = True Exit For End If Next %>
For giggles, I add the ".Visible = False" in there as a test and commented it out later. That doesnt work either. The item still is visible. I know the IF statement passes as it enters into the if statement using debug mode and hits the "Exit For" so I know the condition is being met. I am at a loss over this one.

i have a dropdown list in edit mode and read only mode. If users upload pictures, i want them to chose a category for the uploaded pics and display it in a gridview as below.(See Picture below). When i include "SelectedValue='<%# Bind("CategoryID")" in edit and item template mode, i get this error "'PictureReadOnlyCategories' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. I have a DetailsView that binds a User's Profile data into an ItemTemplate upon the Page_Load. When the user chooses Edit Mode, all of the Data is correctly carried over, except for the DropDownLists selected values. If on the ReadOnly page, the user's data shows "Male" for the Sex, then on the edit Mode page, I would like the DropDownList that gets the sexes from the database ("male", "female"), to have automatically selected "Male" in the DropDownList, not the lowest indexed item.

1. with the appendDataboundItems = true, on aspx page, and below code in codebehind:

I have a web form for handling invoices which has a form view. When I'm in insert item template, I need to have various fields. Some of them are contract number, invoice number, register date and other that are easy to handle. But there is a dropdown list related with a table of prices (the table has price name, price initial payment, number of payments, amount of month fee and so on). So, when the dropdown is selected, fields related with price should get their values from price table, and then the user decides to keep them or type in new values. How can I get it done? Should I use a Dynamic populate extender or type all the code behind using SelectedIndexChanged method to populate price related controls?
