what is the easiest way to develop data driven page titles?
e.g. say a user is viewing a record called "Football" with an ID of 1 = then in the page title, the title "Football" would appear
Not sure if the derived page is actually relevant to the problem here, but ran into an interesting gotcha on some code I'm working through at the moment.
I have a custom masterpage class, which derives from System.Web.UI.MasterPage so that it can be extended with additional useful properties. The page that that uses this masterpage has a declaration at the top (note the Page Title being set).

In addition, the master page has stylesheet references in the head which are pulled from a CDN that is defined in a config file.

Now the example above obviously doesn't work, because the runat attribute in the head container means that the codeblock in the the link is static text, and renders as is, in the resulting html.
If I remove the runat attribute from head, the CDN works, but now I notice that the Title is no longer being set. If I debug, and try to access Page.Title in the Immediate Window, I get an exception:

So, is there a way to get the Page Title from the declaration, put my own title placeholder in the head and set it from the master page code-behind, or, is there a better way to dynamically set the CDN domain for the stylesheets? The only way I think I can do that is to build the entire html link tag(s) and append it to the header control, but I thought there might be a more elegant solution, so I'm asking here first.
I've got a Datalist displaying entries from a table and I want to change the title of the page based on a field in the table.
So everytime the selected displayed entry is changed it would change the Title of the page to reflect the value of that field.
i have a question that iam using one masterpage file in multiple aspx pages, so the problem is that i can set the Page Title only in MasterPage File which is automatically inherit with my all aspx page where ever iam giving that MasterPage file reference. how can i change that multiple aspx pages titles using one MasterPage File.
View 3 RepliesAs a workaround for the fact that asp:Checkboxes don't have values, I am attempting to dynamically create the ID's of checkboxes in a DataList so that it inserts the primary keys into the control ID. This is surprisingly difficult.
I have placed a PlaceHolder in my DataList ItemTemplate, then in the ItemCreated I create the checkboxes using string.Format("Checkbox{0}", DataBinder(e.Item.DataItem, "ID")). The problem is that this only works in a non-postback condition, as on postback the DataItem is null. And of course ItemDataBound isn't called on PostBack so that won't work either.
I can't seem to find a good way to handle this short of if (IsPostback) dataList.Bind(), which i don't think is a good way to do it.
Can anyone provide me with any alternatives here?
We have a fairly large website with several master pages. Right now the titles are being controlled by Session variables in individual pages and set by the master page. The code is bad and needs to be redone. With the current system, since the master page is executed last, we can't completely overwrite the page title when needed from the page. What is the best way to create breadcrumbed page titles across a large site in ASP.NET with several master pages, without using Sessions variables? Session variables are bad for page titles mmmkkayy.
View 1 RepliesI have a listview control bound to an SqlDataSource. As part of the formatting I want to add a title to the data returned from my database. For instance if the data base returns a phone number I want to add 'Tel.' first. However I do not want to diplay this
title if the datafield is empty. Here is what I have done so far.

I have a datalist that retreives category names for a knowledge base system I'm working on. When you click to view all the category titles, I want to hide those category titles that don't have any articles associated with that category. So, for example, you click to see all the category titles, but because there isn't any KB articles for "Mice", the "Mice" category isn't visible.

I am using grid view with row "data bound event" at row row data bound i am using some function with loops to fill drop down of grid view in template columns. grid view gets populated with selected index change event of drop down. my problem is the asp.net page is getting slower i mean when grid populates its taking some time and some time page get hanged what to do to get rid of it?
View 1 RepliesI have a gridview in aspx page bound to a stored procedure, and data is loaded from the database. I have 2 problems which I am banging my head against. 1. Stored Proc has default values of NULL ( which is a DateTime db type) and I don't get how to give them as default values and once I have valid date time ( from textbox on form) , I need stored proc to take this value . ( I have done this from server side code but if this is able to acheive from client side that would be great.
2. As shown below my gird view is present ( no columns are bound and since the data is loading from server side ) I am unable to do sorting on the gridview without a sort expression. Does any one know how to do this?? This is my biggest concern. I have checekd all the articles I could find on google

I would like to make the datagrid bound column to redirecting to the details page .
For example , when my mouse over certain row of bound column in datagrid , it will change the colour to blue . Also , I can click anywhere of the row and the will redirect to the detail page .
Notes : I do not want to use hyperlink column and do not want to fix the text for every row. I want to use datafield, CommandName and CommandArguement.

Not sure about this but is it possible to build a webpage with controls on it, then display it in update panel or IFrame? Then on post back you wouldn't have to recreate everything all over again?
I have a requirement like, There is a grid that has multiple rows. On clicking the "add to list" button, the columns from this grid is added to list of tables where source for one table in this list is read from grid view. note that, the grid view and tables will be having just two columns but the rows added to each table might vary.

I'm using an asp:DetailsView control with auto generated "Edit" and "Insert" buttons.
So far its been working reasonably well.
However the client has asked that the "Update" and "Insert" labels be changed to "Save".
At this point I can see two options:
Trap the mode changes for the view and "find" the controls to modify them as appropriate. Don't auto generate the edit and insert buttons, and instead do all the button logic myself.

So I have a GridView control with autogenerated column set to true, it also has autogenerated Edit and Delete buttons, sorting and paging, and also I am binding this same gridview to multiple data sources at runtime. All is working well.
Now I am adding a dynamically generated footer row at runtime. This footer row will allow users to add new record regardless which data source it binds to. So it is working as well except there's a small bug I couldn't figure out why. It's when I navigate to the last page of the gridview, if the rows on the last page is less than the page size, for example, I have page size 10 and the rows in last page is 9, then when I click the 'Add' linkbutton, the Add event does not fire, instead, it fill the last page with additional blank rows, that means if the last page has 5 rows, it will fill 5 blank rows below, if it has 9 rows, it will fill 1 blank row below. Then if you click the add again, it will work. If the last page already has 10 rows then, it works just fine.

I've been using the Item Inserted event for my data controls, such as details view. I'm wondering if there are advantages to doing this with the data sources instead of the data control. There is a lot of overlap in the events provided by these two types of controls. Are there advantages to using the events raised by the data source instead of the ones raised by the data control itself. Should I be using the events raised by the data source instead of the control used to enter the data?
View 2 RepliesI am using gridview to display some columns with autogenerate column as 'true' and not added boundfields,headers.
And i am used stored preocedure for data source in gridview and i used dataset for gridview databind.
The gridview columns comes dynamically for each time.
When I bind my listview with a typed dataset the textbox is filled with spaces up to its max length.
For example if I have "ABC" in the typed dataset and the textbox has a max length of 5 it will actually bind "ABC ".
I know I could trim it ont he databound event, but I shouldn't have to.
I'm having a problem sorting a dropdown that I've bound to a SQL Server data source. I've narrowed the problem down to the fact that I have a static item at the top of the dropdown with the data-bound items appended afterwards. If I remove the static item (<asp:ListItem Value="-1" Text="All" />) the ORDER BY part of the select clause works fine. How can I get around this issue? What I would like is to have the "All" static item at the top of the list with the data-bound items sorted alphabetically afterwards. I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.NET 4 if it makes any difference.
