DataSource Controls :: Data Access Layers And App Data Database Information

Jan 3, 2010

I am using an SQL Express server hosted on a different machine and it is listed in my server explorer just fine. It is listed as my connection string in my web.config just fine as well and lastly it seems to sync just fine with my asp.net membership tables. My question is does it need to be listed in my app data folder of my site? Currently I have the ASPNETDB.mdf connection listed, which is apparently just a local sql express connection. The database I am using in my webconfig and other files is not listed so do I need to add it there?

Second question is about DAL, Data Access Layers. I have mostly been using presentation level SQL commands with my data presentation controls. Manually entering separate select, insert and update statements. I just went through a tutorial that stated the best way to interact with your database in asp.net is with DAL using table adapters. It mentioned that it gives you the ability to use strongly-typed references to each row. My question is can I use the same method multiple times on a single page. For instance a method inside an adapter named GetProductsByID(@ID) ? What if I want this bound to three different gridviews on a single page? Anyone have any other general things to point out about using DAL over presentation level commands?

Data Access Layer - DAL DatasSet And Table Adapter Not In Namespace - Northwind Tutorial?

Mar 31, 2010

I've been attempting to walk through the "Creating a Data Access Layer" tutorial found [URL]I create the DB connection, create the typed dataset and table adapter, specify the sql, etc. When I add the code to the presentation layer (in this case a page called AllProducts.aspx) I am unable to find the NorthwindTableAdapters.ProductsTableAdapter class. I tried to import the NorthwindTableAdapters namespace, but it is not showing up. Looking in the solution explorer Class View confirms that there is a Northwind class, but not the namespace I'm looking for.

I've tried several online tutorials that all have essentially the same steps, and I'm getting the same results. Can anyone give me a push in the right direction?I'm getting error: Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'NorthwindTableAdapters' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member.I think I might need to add a reference OR they may be creating a separate class and importing it into their main project. If that's the case, the tutorials do not mention this.

SuppliersTest2.aspx.vb:
Imports NorthwindTableAdapters
Partial Class SuppliersTest2

Finding New Data Access Best Practices / How To Handle Data Access, And Data Manipulation And Display

Dec 15, 2010

I've been out of the ASP.Net arena since 1.1, and I'm starting to get back into it after a hiatus.

In the past, I would generally create SqlDataReaders, wire them up to pull from tables in a database via direct sql or accessing database views (mostly in MSSQL), grab the data, and display it in some datatable, or datalist.

Modifying data would usually be calling a stored procedure in the database to add/modify data, and then retrieve it afterward.

Now that I read up, I see there are alot of new things in ADO.Net world; strongly typed datasets, auto-generated adapters, etc.

My question is, does anyone have a good reference on best practices (or a book recommendation) on how to handle data access, and data manipulation and display now? I'm assuming that there are more automatic ways to show and manipulate data than before, but the new details are quite vast (which is good), but slightly overwhelming for me.

Finding An Object In A Generic List Of Type?

Dec 9, 2010

I have a class Trans, with properties siteID and TID. I have a generic list of this class, TransList = list(Of Trans).

Now I want to find the Trans in TransList where the siteID is 3 and the TID is T1. There will only be one record. I want to then update this Trans in the TransList (so I need a reference to the Trans). I am trying to do the following, but it doesnt like it.

How To Access Session Values From Layers Beneath The Web Application Layer

Apr 23, 2010

We have many instances in our application where we would like to be able to access things like the currently logged in user id in our business domain and data access layer. On log we push this information to the session, so all of our front end code has access to it fairly easily of course. However, we are having huge issues getting at the data in lower layers of our application. We just can't seem to find a way to store a value in the business domain that has global scope just for the user (static classes and properties are of course shared by the application domain, which means all users in the session share just one copy of the object). We have considered passing in the session to our business classes, but then our domain is very tightly coupled to our web application. We want to keep the prospect of a winforms version of the application possible going forward.

Looking For Best Way To Handle Data Persistence

Apr 2, 2010

I am writing a site with six pages that use the same 12 pieces of data for x number of people. The user always goes to a fixed page where I do all of the DB related work to get the 12 pieces of data for x number of people. However, I don't want to do the DB related work again as it is overhead intensive. So after the initial page I end up with something like this:

Person1, Data1, Data2,Data3,.......Data12
Person2, Data1, Data2, Data3........Data12
[code]...

I have been trying to figure out the best way to store the data so that I can use the data set throughout the remaining 5 pages. I thought of setting up an array within a class but I keep getting a null value when I try to access that class values (maybe I have it set up wrong). I thought using a session variable to store the array, but because it is multi dimensional I am having issues (again, most likely due to a lack of knowledge). I thought perhaps storing the array into a temp SQL table would be efficient, because then it would be a single read out to SQL to get the datatable containing the data back into the page, but that seems like a lot of work for something that should be easier.

Jquery - MVC 2 - Finding Best Implementation Of Status / Update / Generic Message Delivery And JavaScript Modal Display

Oct 5, 2010

For an MVC 2 app that relies on many partial views and almost exclusively uses Ajax for POSTs/GETs, what would be the best way to implement the setting, passing, retrieval and display (using a JavaScript modal) of these messages?

My forms all POST (by way of jQuery $.ajax) to actions that return partial views (html) that are used to update a in the "success:" part of the $.ajax function.

I was hoping for some sort of mechanism in the master view that could "listen" for any messages that any of these partial views might be "delivering"--through their ViewData, for instance.

Security :: Losing Persistence Using Forms Authentication?

Feb 13, 2011

I have had a website on a shared web hosting plan for over a year with no issues with keeping persistence. It's been prettys stable, and the only drawback of the host I am using is that it's very slow on occasion...sometimes taking 5-10 seconds to load a page.

So over the last few weeks, I went searching for another web host and and testing one out now.So while my existing website is still running the old web host, I copied the code and data and pushed it on the new web host. It's up and running, but I noticed that shortly after I log in (Forms Authentication), I am logged off within 20-30 seconds.I decided to add the machineKey to the web.config, and it seems to have fixed it.

My question is why would this have fixed it? I asked if the host's servers were in a web farm.

Generic Casting To Access Text Property?

Sep 23, 2010

I have a situation where I'm iterating through all the controls on a form, specifically looking out for any of these three types of controls: Labels, TextBoxes, CheckBoxes

I can, of course, get the type of the control and then use a Switch-Case construct to cast labels as Labels, textboxes as TextBoxes, and checkboxes as CheckBoxes.

But I'm wondering if there's a way to do something with one or two lines of code to gain access to the Text property of each of these controls?

Architecture :: How To Pass Data Between Layers

Jul 6, 2010

I have three layers like UI, business and data access in my asp.net web application project. If I pass say a company code from the UI to the business to the data access and I query the company details like company name, address, phone etc from the database using sqlhelper executedataset() which wil return me a dataset. Then how do I pass these company details back to the UI layer. Is it correct to just pass the datatable object to the business and UI.

Share Entity Data Model Amongst Layers?

May 17, 2010

How can I share the auto-generated entity data model (generated object classes) amongst all layers of my C# web app whilst only granting query access in the data layer? This uses the typical 3 layer approach: data, business, presentation.

My data layer returns an IEnumerable<T> to my business layer, but I cannot return type T to the presentation layer because I do not want the presentation layer to know of the existence of the data layer - which is where the entity framework auto-generated my classes.

It was recommended to have a seperate layer with just the data model, but I'm unsure how to seperate the data model from the query functionality the entity framework provides.

Forms Data Controls :: Security Tutorial 12, User Account GridView Doesn't Shrink To PageSize?

Mar 8, 2010

I've been working through the ASP.NET Security Tutorial 12, seen here:

http://www.asp.net/%28S%28pdfrohu0ajmwt445fanvj2r3%29%29/learn/security/tutorial-12-cs.aspx

Part of this tutorial entails setting up a GridView which is bound to the collection of UserAccounts, and then enabling paging on the GridView. There are the usual four links for First, Prev, Next, and Last pages, which should work because I have twelve users defined, and the pagesize of my GridView set to 5. I've set up the code to enable or disable the paging links depending on what section of the entire UserGrid is currently visible.

So when I first run the website and go to the ManageUsers.aspx page, I would expect to see only the first five users in my collection. But it shows all twelve.

I must have overlooked something, but I can't find it in the text and examples.
