Web Forms :: Go From Single To Multi Projects Website?
Jan 8, 2011
I created a website with a single project solution. Each web page consists of C# code in a script block along with the markup. In order to make the website work with many languages, now realize that I will need to have the code for each page reside in separate code-behind files that can be combined with the markup in various languages. I assume this means that I will need a solution with a common project of code-behind files that is merged with a project of markup files for each language in order to create websites for host servers in the various countries. After I separate the code into code-behind files from the markup for each web page, I will need to know how to organize the solution for debugging and building each website and where to place each file.

I've seen some teams that start breaking into multiple projects from the beginning and others build behemoth single projects. The large project teams say that one massive project is easier to maintain than multiple smaller projects.

I have a base project (with all its glory, dlls, resources etc) which is a CMS. I need to use this project as a base for othe custom bake projects. This base project is to be maintained and updated among all custom bake projects. I use subversion (Collabnet and Tortise SVN) I have two questions:
1 - Can I use subversion to share the base project among other projects What I mean here is can I "Checkout" the base project into another "Checked Out" project and have both update and commit seperatley. So, to paint a picture, let's say I am working on a custom project and I modify the core/base prject in some way (which I know will suit the others) can I then commit those changes and upon doing so when I update the base project in the other "Checked out" resources will it pull the changes? In short, I would like not to have to manually deploy updated core files whenever I make changes into each seperate project.
2 - If I create a custom file (let's say an webcontrol or aspx page etc) can I have it compile seperatley from the base project Another tricky one to explain. When I publish my web application it creates DLLs based on the namespaces of projects attached to it. So I may have a number of DLLs including the "Website's" namespace DLL, which could simply be website. I want to be able to make a seperate, custom, control which does not compile into those DLLs as the custom files should not rely on those DLLS to run. Is it as simple to set a seperate namespace for those files like CustomFiles.ProjectName for example? Think of the whole idea as adding modules to the .NET project, I don't want the module's code in any of the core DLLs but I do need for module to be able to access the core dlls.
(There is no need for the core project to access the module code as it should be one way only in theory, though I reckon it woould not be possible anyway without using JSON/SOAP or something like that, maybe I am wrong.) I want to create a pluggable environment much like that of Joomla/Wordpress as since PHP generally doesn't have to be compiled first I see this is the reason why all this is possible/easy. The idea is to allow pluggable themes, modules etc etc. (I haven't tried simply adding .NET themes after compile/publish but I am assuming this is possible anyway? OR does the compiler need to reference items in the files?) I posted a similar question with a little more detail for question 2 on Experts-Exchange. I don't want to post all that info here as it just will be too messy but it explains question 2 in greater detail.

I have this code which takes a value from a dropdown control as a parameter.
[Code]....
I'm now changing to a list control so that multiple items can be selected. So far I have some code that places the items selected into a string that looks like this:
'item1','item2','item4'
For the above example I would need all the the records returned when the field action_ref contains either item1 or item2 or item3.

Our current application is working fine but when you try to misbehave like we found out that When login with same user in multiple tab with different organization(there is a organization dropdown in the master page which sets the cookie whenever it is changed.) in tab one it is org 1 and tab 2 it is org2 , cookie has the later org 2 in it but when we go back in tab1(which had org1) and save the record org 2 will be saved with the record So can some one share some sort of a checklist with us which address these types of problem.

My company has several class libraries we use in multiple website projects (not web application projects). Website projects don't have .sln files, but I'm sure I've read in my past research that you can make a blank solution and put your website and class library projects in it. After answers to my previous questions, this is the direction that I'm going (based slightly on [URL]
/websites
/website1
/trunk
/website1
/libraries
/library1
/trunk
/library1
/library2
/trunk
/library2
/etc...
Then I planed on using svn:externals to copy /library1, /library2, and so on into the working_copy/websites/website1/ folder. I want my team members to be able to checkout the /trunk folder for website1 and get a .sln file, /library1 external, /library2 external, etc. I want that .sln file to contain the website1 website project, and all of the library external projects. Hopefully that would look something like:
/working_copy
/websites
/website1
/trunk
/website1
/library1 (svn:external of libraries/library1/trunk/library1)
/library2 (svn:external of libraries/library2/trunk/library2)
/etc.
website1.sln
So, at the end of all of this, the goal is that my teammates check out the trunk, open the solution, and everyone has the exact same solution. When we commit, everything is committed appropriately to subversion (the website code, and the libraries are committed to their appropriate place on the repo). How have others solved these issues? How can I make a .sln file that my team members and I can share in this manner?

I have one main project for the cms we are using for our website. I have also created usercontrols to include in the site, but I think I would like to keep these in a separate project and just reference them in the main project. Is this a best practice and how would I do this?

I just moved to a new PC and installed VS 2010. I copied all of my websites over from the old machine and now when I open the old websites on the new machine, they do not show up in my recent projects list on the start page. New websites that I make do show up there but the old ones do not. This is very inconvenient. Is there a way to make old projects that I open show up in the list?
This brings up another question. Is there a way to make a shortcut that will open VS2010 up with a website already loaded so that I don't have to go through the file open dialog every time?

I need to create a sample project (for educational purposes) and I'm faced with the choice between Web Site Projects or Web Application Projects. This feels similar to the choice between C# and VB. My question isn't about the differences between these 2 choices, but rather which is more popular (relevant, recognizable) to the general ASP.NET community.Has anyone seen any statistics in terms of adoption/usage of these 2 different project types? What project type should I use to reach the widest audience?Update: I created a poll on this subject - http://poll.fm/2e6cy

I have a multi-tiered application. I would like to publish the class libraries to UI developers to let them add to their web or windows projects to add all the functionality.
I would like to restrict access so only a certain project can be referenced. The reason is so that they do not refer to the data access layer directly and start making calls that would bypass the business logic built into the business tier.
UI->>Business Logic->>Data Access
So in other words, BL and DA are deployed as compiled assemblies. BL references DA. UI will reference BL, but I would like to strictly prevent any other project from referencing DA directly.

I'm trying to do some multi-threading in my asp.net web site. But I'm having trouble getting my child thread to interact with my main thread. In the following very simple example I would expect that, 3 seconds after clicking the button, the "Hello World" text would be displayed on my page and on my label. Instead, after a few seconds, I get the following error in a pop-up box "WebDev.WebServer20.exe has stopped working - Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.". I am running Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. If you know why I'm getting this error and if you know how to fix the problem respond.
ASPX file is as follows:
[Code]....
CS file is as follows:
[Code]....

I've been all around the net for weeks now trying to figure out the best way to set up a Multi-tenant website (building a web app that multiple companies and their employees will use). As far as a database goes, I am interested in using one database with a copied set of tables for each company. As far as managing the login and security in MVC2 I am lost with the myriad of examples (mostly old and not MVC) that I have seen. So ideally my app would allow a company rep to register their company and then be able to add their own employees to the site. Then all employees could login and be securely associated with their own company's tables (table names would be appended with their AccountID).
I'm not sure if this would be handled using routing or session variables or what the more ideal and up to date methods might be. Like others who have discussed this issue, it seems like this should be a much more fleshed out solution as it is becoming a more common use on the internet. I'm even willing to simplify the database down to one set of tables that stores an AccountID in each row if needed.

I have downloaded and reviewed this tutorial [URL] several times. It seems simple enough however the app_GlobalResource file is not working... so here it is.
I downloaded the sample project c# version, the website run nicely except for the global part. When I change the language in IE8 it doesn't change on the page. What is missing, is there something in IE 8 that needs to be turned on or off? I have Win7x64, VS08, IIS running asp 2.0 and IE8.
When I am inside VS08 and use the expressions property the app_GlobalResource link is there (the default) but doesn't switch between the languages.

We have a simple ASP.NET app that uses the ASP.NET SqlMembershipProvider and all is great.
We want to create a second app on the same server, also use the SqlMembershipProvider, but a different "applicationName" so that the user accounts between the two apps are kept separate.
It looks like this would be possible by making the two different app domains (ie they each have their own web.config), but I'm hoping to just put them in different directories so I don't have 3 web.configs (one for each app, and the main one) that all have to be kept synchronized. So what I'm after is:
/web.config
/APP1 (uses membership provider in /web.config, with userlist A)
/APP2 (uses membership provider in /web.config, with userlist B)
It looks simple to define multiple membership providers that use a different 'applicationName' value.
But how do you tell the system.web.authentication node which membership provider to use?
