Web Forms :: Menu Control Not Rendering In Chrome & IE8?
Jul 28, 2010
I am testing my website in numerous browers and have discovered (amazingly) that the asp:menu
control does not render properly in both the above browsers! Given that these browsers must account for
a large part of internet traffic it is curious that microsoft have not fixed this. I have looked at CSS Friendly but
if looks like a lot of work and change for my websites just for the one control that does not work.

I've defined node styles for my TreeView instance in markup (using <LevelStyles> for example). Everything renders correctly in IE7/8 but, when rendering in Chrome, Safari or FireFox, the styles are not being applied. From looking at the source code for the page, I can see that the various runtime css classes are being injected into the top of the page, but the class attributes on the <a> tags (within the generated TreeView HTML) are empty (class=""). In IE, the class attributes contain references to the classes that were injected into the page.
Can anyone explain why this is happening? I can see no logical explanation for this, and it's a big issue - My client primarily uses Safari, as they're Mac based.

why the following code bombs with a NullReference exception.

I just want to output the html for the menu control to a string, if I remove the line that adds the new menu item or I change the control to a calander control instead of a menu control the it works fine.

The right sides of the dynamic menu items are being chopped off. Also, the entire menu is moved slightly to the left in both browsers. I have been searching for a solution but everything I find so far with Google talks about a problem with the menu not starting on the correct node but I am not having that issue.

I've encountered was appears to be a strange bug with the menu control, and alas, I am unable to find much useful information on it (which leads me to believe I have something installed or confingured incorrectly). Here the problem:
When declaring a menu control with a staticHoverStyle, for example:
<asp:Menu
ID="navMenu"
DataSourceID="srcSiteMap" [code]....
Has no effect on the behavior of the control once it's rendered, neither in Firefox nor IE.In fact, using the source code at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms366731.aspx with no modifications also results in the hoverstyle not working.
This problem seems to be "fixed" if you specify the css attribute declaratively, for example, StaticMenuItemStyle-BackColor="Yellow".
Alternatively, if you specify RenderingMode="table" then the hoverstyle seems to work. It's only when you're using a cssclass with a list that things seem to mess up.
Finally, I notice that in the rendered html, the control embeds some styles between /* <![CDATA[ */ and /* ]]> */ comments that affects the final appearance of the menu control, sometimes overwriting a cssclass you specified (ex: the margin for dynamic menus can only be controlled with the HorizontalOffset property, and not by css). This is undesirable, but I don't see anything that seems to overwrite the behavior of hover elements. Actually, the .hoveritem class doesn't appear anywhere in the markup at all, but when you specify the StaticMenuItemStyle-BackColor property, then the value is rendered correctly in this block of styles.

I am having an issue with the hyperlinks that are created as part of a horizontal menu control. You have to position the cursor in a very narrow range near the very top of the menu option to find the hyperlink associated with that menu option. This is only the case with Firefox and Chrome. You can try it for yourself at [URL] Try clicking any one of the horizontal menu options ("Services" for example. You will see that it is very particular where it will allow you to click to activate the hyperlink. Markup:

Skin:

I hate tables - don't want to use tables, unless I have tabular data to display. A menu is not tabular data (as far as I am concerned.) I was elated to see that in asp.net 4 - the menu control renders as a <ul> <li>, instead of as a table. However - try as I might, I can not get a horizontally orientated Menu to split into even columns, and text align center. FYI - I don't use fixed width - so I can't just set a width to 1000 - and separate it into even columns. Besides that, I want it to change width dynamically, based on the number of "columns (menuItems)" there are. Is it possible to spread out the <li> menu items evenly across the space I provide for them in their containing div or will I have to quite using menu controls, and start using JQuery Menu's?

I couldnt test the page in Safari, dont have a way to get around the cert error since its our dev server. Either way the page looks like crap on everything but IE.
I have 3 small tables on a page.. small as in 4 rows and 3 columns when viewed in the 3 browsers, the columns seem to push over to the left and fall under the first.. so when you view the page what should be 4 rows and 3 columns now looks like 7 rows.. that only way i can explain it.

I've migrated a test site to asp.net 4.0 to take advantage of the list renderingmode for a menu. Having the UL and LI should be easier than the table rendering.I'm making progress, (still have work to do, just ignore the odd border) however one issue continues to plague the testing. IN IE 6,7,8, as the page is rendering, it appears the menu is flickering and trying to render as a vertical menu instead of the correct
orientation which is horizontal. In Moz, Chrome, Sarafi, Opera, I don't get this behavior.
The menu is styled with CSS however I'm not opposed to adding some corrective code directly to the masterpage that holds the menu. I'd apprecate a suggestion as to how to solve this because as it is, it is not usable.Here is the link to the test site.

I've got a simple website that contains a master page with a menu on it. The menu works fine with IE and Firefox but when I try it in Chrome clicking the menu doesn't seem to work.
Here is how I have set the menu up:
How do I get the click on the menu to display the correct page?
<asp:Menu ID="Menu1" runat="server" Height="16px" Orientation="Horizontal"
style="margin-top: 0px" Width="917px">
<Items>
<asp:MenuItem ImageUrl="~/Images/MenuHome.jpg" NavigateUrl="~/Default.aspx"
[Code]....
The menu is wrapping round on to two rows, how do I keep it on a single row?

I have a horizontal asp.NET menu with a vertical submenu that has another vertical submenu. Problem is that in Chrome (works fine in FF and IE), when PopOutImageUrl is defined, when I hover over the 1st vertical submenu, it expands to half the screen. I clear out the PopOutImageUrl, and it's the right size, but I don't notice the 2nd submenu. So how can I keep my arrow image without covering my screen in menu?
<asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="TestPage.aspx" Text="HorizontalMenuItem" PopOutImageUrl="" SeparatorImageUrl="SeperatorImage.png">
<asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="TestPage2.aspx" Text="Test1" PopOutImageUrl="arrow.png" SeparatorImageUrl="" >
<asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="TestPage3.aspx" Text="SubTest1" PopOutImageUrl="">
</asp:MenuItem>
</asp:MenuItem>
</asp:MenuItem>

I have an application including an Asp:menu. This renders perfectly in both IE and Firefox, see screenshot gf1.jpg.
Running in Chrome the rendering is bad. There is added wide space in the top menu, so the area is much wider, and thereby not correct. See gf2.jpg.
I have tried using this workaround found by surfing, but it is still the same. Can I add some additional code, that will prevent this?
Code:
If Request.UserAgent.IndexOf("Chrome") > 0 Then
If Request.Browser.Adapters.Count > 0 Then
Request.Browser.Adapters.Clear()
Response.Redirect(Page.Request.Url.AbsoluteUri)
End If
End If
I want it to be displayed equally in IE, Firefox and Chrome....

I was trying to prototype some jQuery-based menu into ASP.NET MVC. Just to name two examples here: [URL]Their demo page looks great, but when I integrate their sample code into MVC, the script no longer works in IE and FireFox, but it seems to work just fine under Google Chrome. Can someone kindly enough to point out what I missed? I will be honest here. I am still new to JavaScript. I have placed a copy of my VS2010 solution zip file @ [URL] Here is what I did. In the Site.Master, I have something like
<body>
<div class="page">{truncated...}</div>
<script src=[URL]" charset="utf-8"></script>
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ScriptContent" runat="server" />
</body>
And inside View file, I have the following
<asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server">
<div id="original">
{some demo block, copied from javascript demo}
</div>
</asp:Content>
<asp:Content ID="Content3" ContentPlaceHolderID="ScriptContent" runat="server">
<script type="text/javascript" src="<%= Url.Content("~/Scripts/jquery.columnview.js") %>" />
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function () {
$('#original').columnview();
});
</script>
</asp:Content>
Compiled the code and ran it under IE. Ideally, it should work like the demo in [URL], but in reality, it only displays unordered list in plain view. (If you download the solution file and run it, you should be able to repro this as well). Next, tried with FireFox, not working either, same result as IE. Finally, when I try it under Google Chrome 4.1 (lastest version), and the script displays just fine.

Is there a way to add/delete/update the default classes (for instance AspNet-Menu-WithChildren,AspNet-Menu-NonLink ) of the html generated by the asp.net menu or treeview control? I am using CSSAdapters so the menu control renders in a list format instead of table format.

Currently I have a menu control on my webform in ASP.Net 4.0 :
<div class="PNMenu">
<asp:SiteMapDataSource ID="PNSiteMap" runat="server" ShowStartingNode="false" />
<asp:Menu ID="PNMainMenu" runat="server" DataSourceID="PNSiteMap" RenderingMode="List" Orientation="Horizontal" CssClass="PN-PrimaryNavMenu" >
</asp:Menu>
</div>
I am trying to style the menu control to allow the menu items to float to the right of the container, however I am unable to do so as whenever I am styling the a, ul or li it keeps getting overidded by asp.net and floats everything left.
.PNMenu
{
clear:both;

We have to develop an application which has a Vertical left pane menu control which displays all the web pages (A,B,C say). Now if user is in page A and filled some data and clicks on menu control to go to page B, all the data in page A needs to be saved. Also if all the required field in page A are not filled and user navigated to page B, there will be one ! sign after the menu so that user can understand that there some some more fields need to be filled up.
We are planning to place the menu control in the Mater page. Please give me some direction to do this. My question is:
1. If user change menu (In Master Page), how should we save data?
2. How should we display the ! in the menu control?

I am doing a rework on one of my sites and I am attempting to use the asp:menu control.
I am using images in the static and dynamic menus. Hard coded at this point.
On my local machine it works fine but when I upload to the server, the image on the dynamci menus do not appear.
Instead I just get white space where the images should be.
Here is the code:

I know that the code depicted below will not work but I am including it to convey the idea of what I wish to accomplish. I want to use a different SiteMap to construct the menu on the displayed page for each of three different classes of service (COS).
I set a session variable named "COS" at the login and want to test its value prior to rendering each page. I want to display a menu based upon the appropriate COS. Here is my first stab at it but I know that I cannot include <asp:...> controls within the "case" statements. Can anyone suggest methods of doing this? I know C# and can use that but I do not know how to select the proper sitemap within the <menu> control. I am also using a CSS in my production version.
