What's The Best Method For Extending The Functionality Of A Standard Web Server Control
Nov 21, 2010
Currently my code resembles this:
<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="CustomPanel.ascx.cs"
CodeFile="CustomPanel.ascx.cs" CodeFileBaseClass="System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel"
Inherits="MyProject.CustomPanel" %>
...
namespace MyProject
{ public partial class CustomPanel : System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel
{ ... }
}
However, I'm really not sure how to proceed from here, because this does not appear to follow a logical inheritance path that includes System.Web.UI.UserControl / Am I doing something wrong? How can I inherit Panel and extend standard event-handlers, such as PreInit?

I'm trying to extend de GridView control with a Custom Server Control, I'm doing ok with extended properties but when I get to methods that need to re-apply or modifiy the DataSource I don't get any data in the grid, though the SQLDataSource actually retrieve data. Here is my MyGridView.applyFilter() method, which should filter the data but actually shows an empty GridView, but as I sayed, the DataSource has data. I try to find (FindControl) theSQLDataSource of the GridView (Me) and modifiy its paramters, thenDataBind Me to apply the changes...
[Code]....
What am I doing wrong? why is the gridview empty?

I'm trying to extend the GridView into a custom/user control "WorklistGridView". And I'm not quite sure how to do it... so here's what I need:Every row needs to have a control (either a boundfield or a templatefield with a label, etc.) that contains the StepID (which is a column returned in the data set).I want to be able to use the WorklistGridView as a base class and extend it to something like "XyzWorklistGridView", where that child class would have a few more controls in the row template.

I've created loads of user controls, but this is my first time dealing with extending a server control. The problem I'm getting is that the base control's data is not being persisted across postbacks in a Master/Content page.I'm actually trying to get this working using a Telerik control (for my sins), but the same issue happens with a standard Web TextBox control. Code:
[Code]....
Now, I've copied the way I handle the control state as I do it with user controls (ControlState), and it isn't working. Can someone point me in the right direction please? All the examples I find refer to creating user controls, not extending existing controls. Specifically why nothing is being persisted on post back.

How can I accomplish this without asp:button control?

Is there a standard method for calculating fixed width values for tables in HTML? Right now, I'm working on formatting tables on a web page to be a fixed width, I have a table that's within another table, when testing the page in IE I notice that the alignment of the colon is off as the second picture below illustrates. My intention is to make sure the colons are properly aligned as they are in Firefox and was just curious if the misalignment was due to the settings in the HTML or if it has more to do with how the browser renders the page.
Firefox:
Internet Explorer:
UPDATE: Sorry for not providing any reference code, here's a snippet of the particular section I'm working with.
<div style="width: 1600px; text-align: center; position: absolute; top: 10%; left: 0%;">
<span id="labelInstructions" style="font-size: xx-large;">PAGE TITLE <br><br></span>
<table style="width: 1000px;" align="Center" border="0">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td style="width: 1000px;"><label for="FileUpload1" style="font-size: x-large;">ENTER: </label><input name="FileUpload1" id="FileUpload1" size="70%" type="file"></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="width: 1000px;"><span id="fileUploadError" style="color: Red; font-size: medium;"><br><br></span></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="width: 1000px;">
<table style="width: 1260px;" border="0">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 800px;" align="right" valign="top">FILE INSTRUCTIONS:</td>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 1800px;" align="left" valign="top">INSTRUCTION 1<br>INSTRUCTION 2<br></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 800px;" align="right" valign="top">FILE EXAMPLE:</td>
<td style="font-size: x-large; width: 1800px;" align="left" valign="top">EXAMPLE 1<br>EXAMPLE 2<br><br></td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
I know it's ugly, just a note, this is an ASP.Net generated webpage and I'm setting the attributes of the HTML elements pro-grammatically from the code behind. I sorta inherited this and my employer wants to keep major changes to a minimum. UPDATE 2: When I adjust the inner table width I can get it to align in IE when set to 1377px. For Firefox, the sweet spot for alignment is 1260px.

is it posible to add client side functionality to a custom server control in vb.net?i am looking at msdn library and there is no code for vb :/ http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa719700%28v=VS.71%29.aspxI fount this on MSDN Library Adding Client Capabilities to a Web Server ControlWhat i'm trying to do is to add some client functionality to my control, so that you can get or set some properties/values on client side. From the above link i see that this is doable with Ajax Server Control, but i don't have it, i have Custom Server Control. Can i do this with Custom Server Control and how?

I want to get my user list provided by ASP.net membership provider with the GetAllUsers method.
This method has the paging support but I did not see any sorting support. Which means that this will sort the rows with default columns. But I want to customize it and sort the rows by my define column.
In addition, as I have already mentioned that I will implement paging and sorting both features so I want to implement the sorting feature at database end so that only filtered rows are fetched by application.

I have a contract budget management program where hours to be worked (within various contracts' period-of-performance) are computed. These projected hours are displayedto the employee in a gridview on their timesheet (web program) to be used as a guide for charging hours worked. A new FIO bought well-known accounting software with it's own timesheet function but without the budget function. I'm trying to figure out the best way to present the projected hours on the same web page as the 3rd party timesheet (I don't have control of the latter; it's just a URL). In ASP days I would have built an I-frame. Evidently an earlier version of .Net had <frameset> function but that is obsolete. What is the best way to accomplish my goal?

I have a rather large application that has literally a hundred DDLs with Yes / No ListItems. In an attempt to save myself some time, I created a custom control that extends the standard DDL.It all seems to work fine but I am having some issues when assigning the SelectedValue property in code where the selected value does not seem to have an affect on the control. I wonder if I should be adding my items during Init or PagePreLoad? Should I be calling base.OnInit before or after I add the list items? This mostly works but not 100%. (v3.5)
public class YesNoDropDownList : DropDownList
{
protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e)
[code]...

What would be the best way to extend the EntityDataSource control? I have a site that implements Entity Framework and I current create my model container and add it to the HTTPCurrent context. When I create EntityDataSource controls on the page I have to go into the code behind and set the OnContextCreating to add MY context to the EntityDataSource instead of the one that EntityDataSource creates. This is because in my model I have extended the Partial Classes to support Validation and custom Save/Delete methods.I would ideally like to create a custom control that I can drop onto a page that has its context already set to the context that I created.

I have SQL Server Standard 2008 installed on my machine, alongside Visual Studio 2008.
My current hosting provider (not a huge fan) requires me to access my db's remotely via SQL Server Management Utility. To date, I've been doing it by connecting remotely in VS2008. Their troubleshooting documentation/steps, though, are for the SQL Server Management Express 2008, and i'm having a lot of connectivity issues with them.
I followed the steps here: [URL] to "add additional features to an existing installation" - but when I did so, the setup wizard indicated that the Management Tools-Basic were already installed.

Are there any ways in ASP.net to fetch data from the server without extending the session timeout? This needs to be done every few minutes without user interaction until the page is closed.
Additional context, as requested:
The pages in my webapp needs to poll the server every few minutes to check for a particular condition (emergency maintenance scheduled for 30 minutes time, in this instance). When the condition is true, the page will display a message to the user. When the condition is false, nothing needs to happen.
As I understand it, postbacks to the server reset the time until the session expires. We do not want the session to be extended/refreshed/reset/whatever the word is every time the page polls the server. I need a way to poll the server automatically without resetting the session timeout.

I an expanding on the HotGridView control (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163612.aspx). During testing I noticed the "AutoGenerateCheckBoxColumn" behavior was returning true even if the user did not specify the a value in the markup but I expect it to return False if not value is supplied by the user - can anyone shed some light on why the AutoGenerateCheckBoxColumn is always true if not explicitly set to False in the markup?

This is my first "request for help" post - I've spent the past few weeks helping others, so I'm hoping someone can shed some light here.I've dealt with server controls before, so it's not new to me, but it was some time ago and I'm a bit rusty. I have an inherited calendar control, that works fine:
[Code]....
I've overriden the Render method, hoping to be able to modify the HTML output of the control - I want to hide the back arrow if the Month & Year in MinDate is reached in the calendar, and the same goes for MaxDate and the forward arrow.On top of this, I want to be able to display icons in the day cells, under certain data-bound conditions. Once I've figured one out, I'm sure I'll be able to work the other one out.Are there any other methods, events or properties more suitable for this? Are there any other controls that do what I'm looking for that I've maybe overlooked?I'm using C#.Net 4.0 Webforms - it's a very small app, so I've not used MVC etc... just a few LINQ queries to the database.

I have an Asp.Net TextBox control whose enabled property I need to evaluate using a separate (from the code-behind of the containing page) class. The way I want to do this is:
<asp:TextBox ID="myTB" runat="server" Enabled="<% ToggleControl(this, "someBusinessValue") %>" ... />
The reason I need to pass a reference to the calling control is to see if there are other properties I may need to consider before disabling it. The 'this' keyword, however, refers to the page as a whole. And since my TextBox can be within a FormView, or GridView, I can't easily just get the control byexamining 'page.myTB'. I don't want to have to start ploughing through GridViews on the receiving class file just to retrieve a reference to the TextBox.Does anyone know how to refer to the control inline in this way?EDIT 1: This will need to be done to several different types of server control, such as ListBox, CheckBox, RadioButtonList, etc.EDIT 2: The best I've come up with so far is:
<asp:TextBox ID="myTB" runat="server" Enabled="<% ToggleControl(myGridView.FindControl("myTB") as WebControl, "someBusinessValue") %>"

In my application, every time the active tabpage changes, I connect to a database, fill a datatable, and bind it to my data control. That's all the functionality.
The main reason I don't want to use the ajax tabcontrol is because of the way it's rendered on the browser. Assuming that
tabcontrol.autopostback is true, the user clicks on another tabpage and he will see the tab change, and for a fraction of a second he'll
see the data previously displayed in that tab. Then the page will do postback and the data in that tabpage will be refreshed. It just seems awkward. I also want it to work even if javascript is disabled.
I also tried using the multiview control, but it doesn't work without javascript.I simply want a "tabcontrol" similar to the one used on ebay.com. Once you do a search, you'll see three tabs: "All items", "Auctions only", and "Buy It Now Only". I can have everything disabled (active scripting, Flash, etc) and they still work.
