Why Sql Not Bringing Back Results Unless Set Varchar Size
Jun 17, 2010
I've got an SQL script that fetches results based on the colour passed to it, but unless I set the size of the variable defined as a varchar to (50) no results are returned.
If I use: like ''+@Colour+'%' then it works but I don't really want to use it in case it brings back results I don't need or want.
The column FieldValue has a type of Varchar(Max) (which can't be changed as this field can store different things). It is part of aspdotnetstorefront package so I can't really change the tables or field types.
This doesn't work:
declare @Col VarChar
set @Col = 'blu'
select * from dbo.MetaData as MD where MD.FieldValue = @Colour
But this does work:
declare @Col VarChar (50)
set @Col = 'blu'
select * from dbo.MetaData as MD where MD.FieldValue = @Colour
The code is used in the following context, but should work either way
<query name="Products" rowElementName="Variant">
<sql>

select * from dbo.MetaData as MD where MD.Colour = @Colour

</sql>
<queryparam paramname="@ProductID" paramtype="runtime" requestparamname="pID" sqlDataType="int" defvalue="0" validationpattern="^d{1,10}$" />
<queryparam paramname="@Colour" paramtype="runtime" requestparamname="pCol" sqlDataType="varchar" defvalue="" validationpattern=""/>
</query>
Also I can't set the size in <queryparam paramname="@Colour" paramtype="runtime" requestparamname="pCol" sqlDataType="varchar" defvalue="" validationpattern=""/>

I am using PageMethods to send a few parameters to a webmethod in my codebehind. The method runs a stored procedure and uses the results to build a string that I am returning from the method.
Everything works fine until I try to include too many records in my results..
Once the results I am trying to return hit about 70K, the pagemethod times out even though it is taking about 1 second to process the results.
Is there a buffer limit or limit on the size or results returned from a pagemethod and if so, where can this be set or changed?
Is there a setting in the web.config somewhere to handle pagemethod buffer size?

I know that varchar(n) in sql server specifies that a variable character of n bytes can be stored But what value of "n" should I choose if I have to store a string of say 100 character in that field. I am not able to decide the size of varchar when creating a table in database when I have to store a string of say 50 characters or string or 100 or say 1000 characters.

I have an output parameter called '@packIds', that I create in ADO.Net using the code below:
SqlParameter packIdPara = new SqlParameter("@packIds", null);
packIdPara.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.VarChar;
packIdPara.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;
sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(packIdPara);
How will I specify that the parameter '@packIds' is of max size? I cannot find any code for this.

I have heard that even though the maximum varchar size is 8000, that we should not go higher than 7500 for the size value. What is the logic behind this advice?

I have two database.one is "TEMS1" and another one is "TEMSLIVE"
"TEMS1" is my local database.
"TEMSLIVE" is client database.
my application is working fine while connecting to my local database. when connecting to client database("TEMSLIVE") it's shows "Msg 457, Level 16, State 1, Procedure GET_MY_TRAVEL_PENDING_ACTIONS, Line 53 Implicit conversion of varchar value to varchar cannot be performed because the collation of the value is unresolved due to a collation conflict." this error. i have compared "TEMS1" and "TEMSLIVE" stored procedure(GET_MY_TRAVEL_PENDING_ACTIONS),but both are identical only.

I have a view that is strongly typed:
<%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<MPKwithMVC.Models.SmartFormViewModel>" %>
Works great to generate the view, but when I post, I have an ActionResult defined:
[AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)]
public ActionResult Next(MPKwithMVC.Models.SmartFormViewModel model)
{ .. }
Which I would imagine get hit when my next button is clicked (it works if I change the argument to a FormsCollection). I instead get a message saying "No parameterless constructor defined for this object".
My SmartFormsViewModel is:
[Serializable]
public class SmartFormViewModel
{
public List<Question> Questions { get; set; }
public List<Answer> Answers { get; set; }

I'm working on a asp.net forms web application where I've got advanced search form with grid listing results below. Grid is sortable and pageable. Grid is listing products.
I've got two requirements :
1) make the url remember the advanced search form state so search results page can be bookmarked etc.
2) on the product details page there is a back button that should take the user to the advanced search page with the same settings in the form and same grid state.
I have implemented a workaround to above two problems but I don't think my solution is very clean and I'd like to hear better ideas. My workaround is as follows :
1) I iterate through form fields and I put values into the querystring after the hash. So when the page is loaded it gets the values from url if available.
2) when user clicks a link to product details page from the grid I use javascript to create a cookie with url to advanced search page so when rendering the product details page I know the url for the back button.

I have tried various techniques that some seemed to have outlined and so far none of them have worked. I have a situation where the Page_Load() needs to build a set of <input id=<dynamic name'>> that are build dynamically inside a
. The form gets created fine but when I click the button and look at the results returned to the server I cannot seem to find the input values. Is there a defined way of accomplishing this?

I have a page showing user records in GridView. Users can do paging, sorting, filtering all on the page. All records inside GridView have typical edit and delete buttons. When user click Edit button I load complete record on the next page which user can edit and save. When user save record how can I send user back to the GridView page displaying the same record which user has editing. I means if I simply use Response.Redirect and send user back the page with GridView load again with first page of the grid and user can't see the same record which user has edited after moving forward few pages in the GridView.
Also when user save record on the editing page. Why user need to press browser back button twice to go back to GridView page? I think if I can create a link or button on the editing page which can send user two pages back by playing with browser history or javascript my problem can solve.

Normally, I use App_Offline.htm for taking the site offline. But occasionally, when I do that, the site just hangs (like in: browsers wait forever, server gives no response at all). This seems to happen on an updateable site when I change something, like a control and afterward, when it doesn't go quick enough (site hangs), I place App_Offline.htm in the root of the website.
In most cases, this immediately takes down my site. But occasionally it doesn't. In those cases, I cannot just stop the website (when I restart, the behavior continues). Stopping the application pool doesn't let me restart the same app pool. The only two solution so far is restarting the whole IIS web service.
I'd like to prevent this from happening. Is this a bug in IIS not "breaking all actions" when App_Offline.htm is found? I use IIS 7 with Windows 2008 SP2 64 bit.

My application is hosted on IIS6.0 web server. And we observed that the initial page load time is high (30-40 sec) and further page loads take only 5sec.To bring down the page load time, I have deployed the precompiled web solution on IIS.But unfortunately the initial page load time did not came down to larger extent.

We're starting a fairly large project that is going to be using all of the company's development resources and I've been asked to help bring up to speed and mentor a co-worker in C#/ASP.NET/WebForms 3.5 who has years of experience with Java and Classic ASP. What are your recommendations and best practices for helping an experienced developer learn the framework and become familiar with ASP.NET best practices? Books or resources? How often should I be conducting code reviews?

I have a typical reporting application:
Large report <-- HTTP Compression --> ASP.NET Web Server <-- ??? --> SQL Server 2008
Since I have so much (repetitive) data to send to the client, I would like both network hops to have compression.
Is there a transport-level compression setting for SQL Server?

I know the content palcehlder does not have a size ,I have a masterpage and content page, the master page has a table with a header, content area, and footer, header and footer are fixed size, content area is 100%. As the user sizes the browser the content area grows and shrinks and the footer stays at the
bottom of the browser window - perfect!
Problem: The contentpalceholder does not grow to fill the available content area. Now, the contentplaceholder gets its size from its contents, which in this case is a div holding a silverlight object.I was thinking I could hook the master or child page's re-size event and somehow pass that info onto the SL object, but as it turns out (and I'm surprised I never knew this) there is no aps.net page re-size event! (really?, wow.)
So is there a way to get a SL object hosted on a master page to size itself based on the size of the browser window?Or more generally, a way to size the contents (like a div or panel) of a contentplaceholder based on the browser? on a standard aspx page (not a master page) I CAN get the SL object to size itself based on the broswer, the problem seems to come from the fact that I'm hosting the SL object in a content placeholder.
I guess I could 'unroll' the master page into several standalone pages and have it work, but the menu is on the master page and I'm used to using them, plus it's already done...<sigh>

I am using TabContainer with some controls on each tab (asp: labels, text boxes). When redirecting to the page that contains the TabContainer, the tabs and their content loads as expected, but when there is a postback, and the page refreshes, the TabContainer UI changes - the font size of the labels gets bigger, the text boxes become bigger and their location changes a bit (not aligned as before), and the tab header is partially hidden. I am using IE7.
I dont know if this is relevant but in some of the text boxes i use edit mask extender as well for date. Also, I have used a table inside the TabContainer for layouting the controls.

In login.aspx I have used login control to enter user name and password, the problem is: even my caps lock is off when I enter user name it prints in capital letters but size is small size (when I copy and paste in note pad or msword it paste in small letters not in capital letters), when I turn on my caps lock on and type - it prints in bigger size as if I am typing in capital letters.
ex: 1. temp is my user name if my caps lock is off it shows like this TEMP (but size in smaller than 2nd one)
2. if my caps lock is on is shows like this as if I am typing capital letters TEMP
what do you think the problem is how can I fix it

As I know, by default Cache is stored in the memory and to the disk at the same time DiskCacheable=true).When the cached response is removed from the output cache due to memory pressure, it still remains on disk allowing a much larger set of pages to be cached. In addition, disk cached pages survive application restarts. And this is already in ASP.NET 2.0.I dont't know in which order the caches are removed from the memory and readen from disk instead? I would like to achive, that caches with the minimal trafic, or the longest last used, would be removed first from the memory. Is there some settings to do that, or even by default works that way?

Here's the scenario:I have an asp.net webpage which displays dynamic data in a gridview.I'm using a master page to display the header and footer of the page, and this gridview is being displayed inside a div in the contentplaceholder.
The Problem:What I want is that the size of the page that is displayed remains constant for a user and must be equal to the size of their browser's available display area and the content being visible by scrolling the div.Sort of like the header and footer remain at the same position and the content inside it is scrollable.

according to the developer of the web service I am calling.He said "bump up the default values for the following":
maxBufferSize="4096000"
maxReceivedMessageSize="4096000"
Where can I put these to bump them up? I've tried googling these settings, and I get sections of web.config that I don't have. I don't have a WCF client, either. Does this make sense to do from my web service, developed in VS 2010?
I'd like to just call his service without changing anything, get the error, and then go from there. I'm even getting that far because I got some other exception saying server was unable to process request, but it had nothing to do with exceeding a buffer size.
