Access A Profile Without Updating LastActivityDate?
Aug 9, 2010
In asp.net (using MVC, but this happens in regular too)
Profile.GetProfile(username);
will update the LastActivityDate for that user. This is not intended when someone else is viewing that user's profile.
In the membership class you can specify whether to update this date with a second param, like so:
Membership.GetUser(username, false); // doesn't update LastActivityDate
Membership.GetUser(username, true); // updates LastActivityDate
Is there anyway to do something similar in the Profile provider without writing my own provider?

I have a web app where I'm asking the new registered user to enter in their first name, last name and then a choice (radio buttons) of whether or not they are a solo artist, or a group! These 3 answers are held in the aspnet_Profile table. As part of the createuserwizard, it works. Saves like a charm. The user then has the ability to go in and edit these 3 fields at will. Upon page load, the two text fields (first name and last name) are blank, and the choice always defaults to the default. So it's not pulling my data for some odd reason. But, when I put put text in the field and press 'Update', it does actually update. So my issue seems specific to not getting the data on page load. I've built a custom UserProfile control by following 'The Beer House' starter kit and book. Here's my page load code for this custom control:

Another obsticle I have today is that none of my breakpoints are working, so I'm battling that as well. This seems very straight foward, and LOOKS correct, but no.. the txtFirstName and txtLastName aren't populated, but there is a first name and last name in the table. Even odder, in my header I have a "Hi John Doe" which concatinates the first name and last name, and this DOES display correctly in a lable. Here's that simple code:

ASP.NET profile properties are trivially available to the code-behind of an ASPX web page courtesy of the HttpContext.Current.Profile object.
In a .svc web service, how does one bring ProfileCommon and paraphernalia into scope?

When is the LastActivityDate supposed to be updated? When I click on any other pages in my web application as an authenticated user, the LastActivityDate does not get updated.
I would imagine it should be updated when a user clicks on any page, whether it be to do with membership (change password, GetUser(), etc) or not. But the examples that I have seen, seem only to update it on ValidateUser().
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.security.membershipuser.lastactivitydate.aspx
Under Remarks, it says to do it under ValidateUser method.
When do you update the LastActivityDate? Just inside ValidateUser()?
Update: Clarified question.

I'm having trouble accessing custom profile properties that I've declared in my web.config using the TableProfileProvider available at [URL] I set everything up according to the instructions but keep receiving an error stating "The type or namespace name 'Profile' could not be found" whenever I refer to the Profile object in my codebehind. My web.config is:
<profile enabled="true" defaultProvider="TableProfileProvider">
<providers>
<clear />
<!-- below is the asp.net default provider -->
<!--<add name="AspNetSqlProfileProvider" type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider" connectionStringName="WebPortalDb" applicationName="/" />-->
<add name="TableProfileProvider"
type="Microsoft.Samples.SqlTableProfileProvider"
connectionStringName="WebPortalDb"
table="_ExtendedUserProfileData"
applicationName="WebPortal" />
</providers>
<properties>
<add name="FirstName"
type="string"
defaultValue="[null]"
customProviderData="FirstName;nvarchar" />
<add name="LastName"

<add name="EmailAddress"

I'm having trouble getting started with the SqlTableProfileProvider. The documentation is here:[URL]I have set up my project exactly like the whitepaper example but I can't access the Profile.SomeProfileField. When I build the project it shows that the Profile object doesn't exist in the current context. I have included the System.Web.Security and System.Web.Profile namespaces. I tried to add a reference to System.Web.Profile but can't find that DLL anywhere to add. Can anyone push me in the right direction?

When a user logs in checking the Remember Me box, the LastActivityDate gets updates and Membership.GetNumberOfUsersOnline() includes them. If they return before the cookie expires, their LastActivityDAte is not updated. Then Membership.GetNumberOfUsersOnline() does include them.

I have a requirement to show a list of all users along with the Last Activity Date. The application is .Net based.
I found the MemberShip class provides the Last Activity date. However, this does not work when the MemberShip provider is ActiveDirectory Link to MSDN page because the ActiveDirectoryMemberShipUser does not implement the LastActivityDate property.
Is there any workaround or other way, I can get the LastActivityDate of the user in the application.

i'm trying to run a conditional statement in a class i'm placing in my App_Code folderthe condition is whether the person is logged in or not. I normally have two ways to do this in my masterpage and ASPX's
if (!User.IsAuthenticated) or if(Profile.username = "anonymous")
however neither of these things seem available to me in the .cs i'm making. anyone know what i'm missing? maybe a using namespace up top?

Passing a null or nothing value to a datatime datatype database field (Access)
I've been all over the internet looking at this and I have tried dozens of methods without success.
I've read a few forums where, some say you can not assign a null value or a nothing value to a datetime datatype field. Then I see others where they say...'I got it to work'.
If this is true (that you can not pass a null value), how come I can create a record in the Access table and not assign a value to this date field? (The field is defined as not required).
Yet, once a value is in the field, I can not update that field back to a null or a nothing value.
So I'm hoping someone has the definitive answer to this.
I am using VB.Net Vs 2003 and updating an Access data base.
I have an update statement (see below) that uses parameters for updating.
what will work, so that I can put back the null or nothing value?
Or if it really can not be done, I guess I'll have to take that as truth.

I was asked to change a textbox for date of birth into three seperate dropdowns. Now I can only find the first one. here is a sample of code
Code:
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Date of Birth">
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="ddlDOBday" />
<asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="ddlDOBmonth" />
<asp:DropDownList runat="server" ID="ddlDOByear" />
[code]...
It manages to get the day fine, but when it tries to find month it fails with error:
System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Web.UI.LiteralControl' to type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.DropDownList'
oN LINE:
Code:
month = CType(grdFamilyMembers.Rows(e.RowIndex).Cells(4).Controls(2), DropDownList)
I assume if the first dropdownlist is control(1), then surely the next one is control(2)? I assume if the first dropdownlist is control(1), then surely the next one is control(2)?

We have a page that contains a loginView and in the LoggedinTemplate is a FormViewTemplate. The display part works fine.
Not all fields are databound due to special hadling needed on diaplay anu onUpdating. The display part works fine. However in the onUpDating procedure. I can't figure out HOW to gain Access to the field content in unBound FormView Fields. I need that to determine and set the output fields that need special handling.
I tried from the formView

This should be easy enough but I can't seem to get it to work. I have a master list table someone forwarded me a separate email table. So, I wrote a quick and very inefficient block to add the emails to the master list. Everything works fine on the form as datagridview1 shows my changes and states the numbers of rows affected. When I check the actual mdb file though, no changes are ever made.

I have used this before with no issues. Now I get to the page with the detailsview using parms I pass with the key to the row. When the page opens the row I want to update is displayed.
I am having 2 issues. One when I change any of the fields and hit Update (the Edit button),
all rows are updating not just the row displayed. The second problem is I have an update_date and an Updated_by field with code in code behind in the Onitemupdating event and they are not updating at all. (This bit of code works fine in another page I have to updated similar fields on an insert).
