Access :: Updating Database Table With A Value From A Custom Form?
Mar 23, 2011
Im using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express and have put together a custom form using ASP controls and labels.
I now need to update an access database with the data that is captured on the form. I have added an AccessDataSource but do not know how to link the fileds to the fileds within the database so that when I click submit it updates the table.

I am working in a school and we recently installed a new server running WinServer 2008R2. I want to be able to point people to a URL on our intranet and have them fill out a simple registration form and have this data written to a database. It would also be nice to have some data auto-populate (such as their name).
Is it overkill to set up a sharepoint server and try to do this with Access Webforms? Could I use something like dotnetnuke and find a module that works? Or how about options for writing custom forms?

We have a page that contains a loginView and in the LoggedinTemplate is a FormViewTemplate. The display part works fine.
Not all fields are databound due to special hadling needed on diaplay anu onUpdating. The display part works fine. However in the onUpDating procedure. I can't figure out HOW to gain Access to the field content in unBound FormView Fields. I need that to determine and set the output fields that need special handling.
I tried from the formView

I have used this before with no issues. Now I get to the page with the detailsview using parms I pass with the key to the row. When the page opens the row I want to update is displayed.
I am having 2 issues. One when I change any of the fields and hit Update (the Edit button),
all rows are updating not just the row displayed. The second problem is I have an update_date and an Updated_by field with code in code behind in the Onitemupdating event and they are not updating at all. (This bit of code works fine in another page I have to updated similar fields on an insert).

I have an asp.net application using visual studio express 2008. On one of my pages I created a dataset from one of my database tables. I am able to delete rows and add rows to the new dataset table. I then have a button and on the click event I use the commandbuilder to update the database table. The database table updates with new rows but the deleted rows are not carried out and I can not figure out why desite spending several hours on google to resolve this issue?
Here is some of my code:
Protected Sub Button_updateDatabase_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button_updateDatabase.Click
Try
'I have created a session variable for my data adapter
Dim commandbuilder As SqlCommandBuilder = New SqlCommandBuilder(Session("Adapter"))
Session("Adapter").UpdateCommand = commandbuilder.GetUpdateCommand
Session("Adapter").DeleteCommand = commandbuilder.GetDeleteCommand
'I created a session variable for my dataset
'This update command updates new rows to my database table but not deleted rows
Session("Adapter").Update(Session("CalendarDataset"), "Name")
Catch ex As Exception
Response.Write(ex.Message)
End Try
End Sub

I have a form in which I display data from a database table, change the data and then update the database table. The form consists of textboxes, so all data displayed in the form is string. However - one data is int in the database table (the rest is varchar), so I need to convert it from string to int when I update the database table. How do I do it?
[Code]....
And, strangely enough, the same code doesn't work with parameters. How is that?:

Here's a short explanation of my asp.net project.
1) the default page loads, it will read the Windows Login of the user opening the page.
2) I'll check if this login exists in a table stored on the webserver.
In this Access Database, there's a 2nd linked table, pointing to another access table on a network location. Now, I want to read data from this linked table. However, at this moment I receive an error:
"The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\<ip><shared-folder>statistics.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data".
Some extra info:
- The network folder has read and write permissions for everyone
- the user and group permissions on both access files are set to read/modify/administer for the Admin user (on the tables I want to read from)
- IIS authentication on the server is set to "Windows Authentication" (this is needed so I can read the Windows Login from the user). All other authentication modes are disables (like anonymous, ...)
- When the error occurs, no other program or process has access to the statistics.mdb (so, it can't be locked by someone else)
- the web.config files access connection string looks like:
<add name="AccessConnectionString" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=\<IP><shared-folder>statistics.mdb;User Id=admin; Password=;" />
Like I said before, in this statistics.mdb file, there are 2 tables. One normal table, and another linked table (pointing to a network location)
Searching for solutions, I discovered the following:
- if I don't use linked tables, everything works fine (however, I have to use this linked table)
- even if I connect directly to the table in the network I receive the error. So, I'm pretty sure I don't have sufficient rights to read from this table.
I read that not the Admin user is opening the file, but actually a user called ASP.NET. This user doesn't have the correct rights to do this. However, I'm not sure if this is true.

I'm new here and really, new to asp.net except the very basic things.
I am trying to create a very simple (I think simple) web form with five textboxes and three dropdown boxes and one submit button. The user enters information in the textbox fields and selects from the dropdown lists (which are populated from the database), hits enter and the database runs the query and returns information on a separate page (or can it return to the same page via panels?) The original page returned to a separate page using server transfer.
I have this page already existing in asp but feel that it would be much better served in asp.net.
Can someone point me to a post where I would guess this has been answered many times?
How do I submit the new data to the database, update the records and return the query?

I have no trouble connecting to a SQL server with code in my web config file for user registeration. But I am having trouble telling it to go to a particular table.
Here is what is in my web config file:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="homeowners" connectionString="Data Source=countrypark3.db.5503108.hostedresource.com;Initial Catalog=countrypark3;User ID=xxxxx;Password=xxxx; Trusted_Connection=False" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
<remove name="LocalSqlServer"/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString=" Server=whsql-v04.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net; Database=DB_675; User ID=user_id; Password=password; Trusted_Connection=False" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
I'm trying to get it to point to the homeowners table.

My code is not updating the sql database. I am definately passing the correct information in to this function, and it runs without errors. If I exec the procedure with the passed in data, it works great. Can someone tell me what is missing?
public DataTable UpdateEmailList(int listId, string connectionString, DataTable EmailList)
{
//DataTable dt = new DataTable();
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(connectionString);
conn.Open();
SqlDataAdapter da = new SqlDataAdapter(null, conn);
SqlCommand cmd = null;
//add
cmd = new SqlCommand("dbo.fp_ServiceAwards_AddEmailToList", conn);
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@emailList_id", SqlDbType.Int)).Value = listId;
cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@email_address", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 255, "email_address"));
cmd.Connection = conn;
da.InsertCommand = cmd;
//delete
cmd = new SqlCommand("dbo.fp_ServiceAwards_DeleteEmailFromList", conn);
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@emailList_id", SqlDbType.Int)).Value = listId;

cmd.Connection = conn;
da.DeleteCommand = cmd;

First and foremost ... I already made a few changes in the template, the most important one changing the methods generated for stored procedures with OUTPUT parameters and no resultset so that instead of instantiating a few OutputParameter objects, passing them to the method and extracting the values (all without any type checking) you just call the method with a few "out someType?" parameters so I do not need the very basics. I am totally confused by all those GlobalItem, EdmProperty,BuiltInTypeKind, TypeUsage and all this made of objects, all alike and all different though so as soon as I need more data than what's already used by the template I run into problems :-(What I would like is to change the WritePrimitiveTypeProperty() so that it outputs [StringLength(xxx)] for all char, varchar, nchar and nvarchar properties. But I can't find a way to get from an EdmProperty in the model to the database type in the store.anyone is interested here's the modified stored procedure mapping code for the template. The first code replaces the original in the .tt:
[Code]....
the second needs to be added into a copy of EF.Utility.CS.ttinclude that you add to your project and reference from the .tt

I created a Class library for WCS service (MyWCFServiceLibrary) to access data form my database. The database connection strings have been defined in Properties->Settings.settings. The endpoints are defined in the app.config. Tracing and logging is set to write to files on local server. This service is hosted by a .net web service. This webservice refrences the WCF service using MyWCFServiceLibrary.dll and MyWCFServiceLibrary.pdb. The web service is hosted in IIS. All this setup is working fine on the development environment.Now I want to deploy this in the QA environment. Since I am a newbie with WCF, I would appreciate some help on what needs to be done for deploying this on the QA server.1. Do I need to recompile the MyWCFServiceLibrary.dll after changing the connectionstring to point to QA database and tracing and loggint paths to the new server?2. Is there anything that needs to be done with end points or anything else?

A class in my ASP.NET website needs to access a database table multiple times for every request. The database table should rarely change, if ever. Maybe a couple times a month.
In the static constructor of the class, the table is fetched from the DB and cached in a static local variable. Whenever the class needs to access the table, then, it just uses the cached, static version.
My question concerns the lifespan of this cached, static version of the table.
I understand that it's fetched the first time the class is instantiated or a static method in the class is used. But how often does this occur on the web server? What if the table changes and we want to reset this static version of the table?
Basically, I'm wondering, is this table fetched once and then only refetched each time I restart IIS? What, with regard to the site and IIS, will trigger this static class to reset, causing the static table to be refetched?

I am sure this has been covered many times but I can not find what I am looking for and I am sure it is simple.
I am trying to insert into an access database table a date taken from a calendar control or a textbox that the calendar control writes to.
Currently I am getting a "datatype Mismatch" error.
