State Management :: Navigate Through A List Stored In Session?
Iwould have a dataset that I would break into 5 new generic LIST<>. Now the user needs to see one record at a time and navigate through the list

Fields like
From date : Text box with calendar
To Date : Text box with calendar
Manager Reporting To : Drop down list
Buttons on Move Back and move Forward

Now I would have 4 such similar lists which I have to pick up from the audit table. When the user clicks on move back and move forward buttons he should be able to navigate through records in my list that I have fetched in the beginning . I can store itin a session or viewstate till it gets updated again. How do I achieve this.

Should I be writing a webmethod to go back and pick up the next record agian and display

Can I also a gridview instead of textboxes.

.net - String Exists In A Collection Stored In .Net Session State?
I have an ASP.Net app that retrieves a collection of roles for a given user. Each role is a string. There's rarely more than 2-3 roles for any one person.I wanted to store the colelction of roles in Session state to save the time accessing the DB on each request.I basically want to write code that checks if a given string exists in the collection to test if the user has that role or not.My question is...what's the best way to do this? Is an array the best collection to store the role strings in Session with? Or is a dictionary better? I figure an array will take less memory (I don't really need a key + value) although a dictionary might lookup faster.

State Management :: Secure Query String Or Session Variable
Example scenario:
User login has a list of associated 'accounts' it has access to... this list of accounts is stored in a database table, say tblAccountAccessControl, something like:

login, accountID
userA, account123
userA, account456
userA, account798
userB, accountABC
userB, accountDEF
etc..

This info is used throughout the web application and determines the 'domain' of information the particular login has access to. For example there are many other tables that have the 'accountID' field and whenever a page pulls data from the table it only pulls data that the currently logged in user should be allowed to see, based on that tblAccountAccessControl data.

The security question:
Do I need to query the database every time I need to get this list of allowed accountID's?I was about to use a plain old query string to pass a particular accountID to another page but quickly caught myself as I realized that would be a major security flaw (the receiving page was going to use that accountID to grab info from the database, and there would be nothing preventing a user from simply typing in a url manually to get data from an accountID they are not supposed to be allowed to view). So I then thought I'll just store the list of accountID's in a session state variable so they will be carried with the user throughout the session.

But then I remembered there are tools out there that allow you to easily intercept and modify asp.net viewstate information and I'm not sure if that would included session state variables, but I'm guessing they would. Is there a way to create a secure query string? If I used session state would that session state information be exposed and modifyable by utilities out there? Am I just stuck having to query the database every time I need this info to assure security? What about encrypting it and then storing in session state variable (just thought of that one)?

Web Forms :: 3.5 Error: Unable To Make The Session State Request To The Session State Server?
Have not run the ASP.NET Development Server for a while. Today I copied a production website to my workstation and ran it with VS 2008. The following error message popped up.What is the problem with the ASP.NET development Server on my workstation? The website on the Production server still ran okay.Unable to make the session state request to the session state server. Please ensure that the ASP.NET State service is started and that the client and server ports are the same. If the server is on a remote machine, please ensure that it accepts remote requests by checking the value of KEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesaspnet_stateParametersAllowRemoteConnection.
If the server is on the local machine, and if the before mentioned registry value does not exist or is set to 0, then the state server connection string must use either 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' as the server name.

State Management :: Session Is Lost In Web Farm Using SqlServer Session State With 3.5
I am facing session lost problem after deplying my project on web farm. Recently our project has been migrated from .net framework 1.1 to 3.5 and we are now using Visual Studio Team system 2008. There is issue in employee self serve mode: As employee logs into the system the sequence of redirection goes like following:

1. EmployeeUsageAgreement.htm
2. LegalAgreement.htm
3. LandingPage.aspx

On Login page we create the sql session state and fill it with necessary SessionData and redirect user to 'EmployeeUsageAgreement.htm' page. On clicking continue at this screen he is redirected to 'LegalAgreemnt.htm' These twopages containstatic information so we have converted these from aspx to htm file as during load testing it is very fast. On clicking continue at LegalAgreement page employee is redirected to 'LandingPage.aspx' This is the deciding point for further screen in sequence so we do some database trips and update more session variables.

After migrating the application to ASP.NET 3.5 and deploying it on Load Balancer we get 'Object Reference not set to instance of an object' error. The error log states that when on page load one session data is added we get this error because 'SessionData' is Nothing. How come SessionData which was created at Login.aspx is not available at 'LandingPage.aspx'. This is working fine when we deploy the project on environment having one web server and one app server but when load balancer comes into picture the session is lost on page 3 in sequence.

I would liketo give some more input on this: I have referred the topic of MSDN and completed the said steps but problem still persists: PRB: Session State Is Lost in Web Farm If You Use SqlServer or StateServer Session Mode [URL] is there any additional setting we need to do in ASP.NET 3.5 using Web Farm because on ASP.NET 1.1 using web farm it was working fine.

State Management :: Session Mode State Server - Sending Asynchronous Request
Customer were getting "View State Validation Error" due to worker process recycling at our production webserver and to fix that i appliedmachinekey and then move my Session state Mode from In Proc to State Server to retain session data and not kick out the customer to relogin. I had serialization issue with one object which has to be stored in session but when i moved it out of session i could able to resolve the issue.

But doing all these i was partly successfull in keeping the user in their session when Worker Process recycle event occurs.I was able to refresh the page or make a post back by clicking the refresh button and also able to retain the session values. But the Problem occurswhen sending asynchronous request to server which we do periodically every 15 minutes from the moment the user logs in.The web page doesnot update data on website when sending asynchronous request.By Debugging I found at this particular code point it fails to make a postback which is required.

<%=GetHintFromServer%> (When there is no Worker Process recycle i t gets replaced by
WebForm_DoCallback('__Page',message,ShowHint,null,null,false)on postback) Everything works fine when there is no Worker Process Recyling but when it happens looks like sending request asynchronously using javascript fails .Remember When I make a post back by manually clicking submit button everything works fine.

SendRequest(Asynchronous)
function SendRequest(msg, isBusy, chartMsg, vesselMsg)
{
try
{
//confirm("msg"+msg+"isBusy"+isBusy+"chartMsg"+chartMsg+"VesselMsg"+vesselMsg);
_busy = isBusy;
if(chartMsg != null)
{
//confirm("chartMsg"+chartMsg);
_element.SetMessage(true, chartMsg);
}
if(vesselMsg != null)
{
confirm("chartMsg"+vesselMsg);
_element.ShowVesselLoading(true, vesselMsg);
}
_stuckWatchdog = setTimeout( "ClearPendingRequest();", 60000);
var message = msg;
var context = '';
<%=GetHintFromServer%>
}
catch(e)
{
alert( "Exception error on SendRequest(): " + e);
}
}

State Management :: Unable To Serialize The Session State In 'StateServer' And 'SQLServer' Mode
I am new to .net 4.0 and am using EF Model and SessionState Mode=SqlServer and I am getting this error below:

Unable to serialize the session state. In 'StateServer' and 'SQLServer' mode, ASP.NET will serialize the session state objects, and as a result non-serializable objects or MarshalByRef objects are not permitted. The same restriction applies if similar serialization is done by the custom session state store in 'Custom' mode.

I checked the stack trace and its complaining about

[assembly: global::System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EdmSchemaAttribute()]
[assembly: global::System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EdmRelationshipAttribute("PoplarGroveModel", "tblMenuRole", "tblMenu", global::System.Data.Metadata.Edm.RelationshipMultiplicity.Many, typeof(PoplarGroveDataModel.Menu), "tblRole",

[Code].....

I marked it as serializable but then it complains about System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext is not marked as serializable and hence throws the same error.

State Management :: Session State Error In UserControl When Using HttpModule For Rewriting
I've written a URL Rewriting HttpModule for a client and it all works fine in the development environment, but when I upload it to IIS7 on my server it starts to complain (no surprise there then). The error that is getting thrown is :

Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the <configuration><system.web><httpModules> section in the application configuration.

It only happens in the IIS 7 and when I use the URL Rewriting (if I go the page directly everything is fine). I can actually use the Session fine in the actual page but the error is being thrown through a custom control that is being used for the menuheader and it needs to know about the session.

I am trying to set a session variable in the global.asax file and keep running into the problem that the Session is null.

I am running my application in VS2008 and using asp.net 3.51.

Here is my code:

1. In my web.config file I have enabled the session state and added the following line;

<sessionState
cookieless="false"
mode="InProc"
timeout="60"
></sessionState>

2. In the Session_Start procedure in the Global.asax file I set the session variable to a default value.

[Code]....

My problem seems to be that whenthe Application_Error procedure is executed the session state is lost.

Does anyone know why the session state isn't available in the Global.asax file.

State Management :: Session State Expiration After Application Pool Recycle?
Allwe have a global ships position tracking websitewhich runs smoothly until IIS application pool recycles.When there is workerprocess recycling looks like session state expires as a result i loose all session data and whencustomer clicks refresh button he is redirected to login page.

In web.config Session state mode is set to InProc so i changed it to State Server but to my luck i have MAP object which is not serialiazable which is causing the maps from notappearing on the website.I tried adding serializable attribute to the object class but still not succesfull.Our website is accessed by our customers whose count is more than 1000.

Changing the session state mode from InProc to StateServer can really slow down the response time so
Is it good to go further fix the serailizable issues and move to state server?.

Is there any way I can retain my session data when application pool recyles?..

Stopping Application pool from recycling may not be a good idea considering health factor of web server.

State Management :: Session State Returning Null Values?
I have a clear button and a textbox in an aspx page. I set the session variable inthis page as

String str = Textbox1.Text;

Session["TypeIds"] = str;

and I clear the sessionsin a clear button event as

Session["TypeIds"]=null;.

Then when the user types some value in the textbox ,on Response.Redirect on another aspx page, the session variable returns null values.It does not retain its session state. The session state has to be maintained in the next page. Is it because this clear button event and setting explicitly to null creates this problem?

State Management :: Session Variable Authentication State Timeout?

The login page verifies the user's credentials, and if they pass, it sets the session variable to a certain value. All other pages check in the page_load event whether or not the session variable is equal to that value. The problem is that once being logged in for a short while andsending and recieving some data, the session variable resets, and I'm returned to the login page to repeat the process. Here's the basic code from my webforms:

Is there some setting I need to change in the web.config file to adjust the cookie timeout or is that only for the config tool authentication methods?

Currently, the login processing code determines if users are in the certain category or role and then sets a value in session state, for example, Session["UserInRoleXXX"] = "Yes"; I tried changing the code in the user control to check the session state, but I got the following error: NullReferenceException ... Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Can session state be accessed in a user control?

State Management :: SQL Session State Lost After Close Browser?
I'm not sure if this is an error or is the right work mode for sql sessions.

I'm working now with Windows 2008 R2 Web Ed. and SQL Server 2008 Web Ed.

When I close my browse and open again a new browser window I need to login again in asp.net application and a new session is created in the sessions table in sql server.

It's this normal? I remember that with Windows 2003 and SQL 2005 this doesn't happend. When I closed my browser and open inmediately a new browser window my session was retained and I could continue working without relogin.
