C# - Binding A Generic List Of Type Struct To A Repeater?

Aug 19, 2010

I've had a bit of a problem trying to bind a generic list to a repeater. The type used in the generic list is actually a struct.

I've built a basic example below:

[code]....

I then create two fruits using the struct (apple and orange). These fruits are then added to the list.

Finally, I bind the generic list to the DataSource property of the repeater...

The markup looks like this:

[code]....

I expect to see the fruit name and price printed on the screen, separated by a horizontal rule.

At the moment I am getting an error relating to actual binding...

**Exception Details: System.Web.HttpException: DataBinding: '_Default+Fruit' does not contain a property with the name 'FruitName'.**

Custom Server Controls :: Using The Generic Type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable' Requires '1' Type Arguments

I'm trying to create a control out of a class I found, and one of the overridden functions is the following:

protected override void PerformDataBinding(IEnumerable data)

However, when I try to build the control I'm getting the error as shown in the subject. I've tried searching, and it seems the signature for the original function matches the one I have, and all other solutions I've seen uses the same signature.

C# - Repeater With Multiple Type Binding?

May 10, 2010

I am in situation where I need to bind multiple types to a single repeater.Say for example I have 2 types in different namespaces

abc.businessLayer.Type_A [properties - Name(string), Country(string)]
xyz.businessLayer.Type_B [properties - FirstName(string), Location(string)]

Now I need to bind the repeater with the combined results of above 2 type collection with the repeater column names "Full Name" and "Country".I am planning to add a new Type_C.cs in the application layer and iterate the A and B type collection to assign the properties in C and finally bind the repeater with Type_C.Can someone let me know if there is better way to go with such kind of issue?

Forms Data Controls :: Binding Repeater To List (of Abstract Class)?

Feb 18, 2010

I am attempting to bind a Repeater (but it could be a GridView or ListView) to a list of objects. The List's type is an abstract type, which has two different classes derived from it, both with different properties. Because they have different properties, I cannot just have one ItemTemplate. If I bind a control to a property of one type of class and the other type doesn't have it, it throws an error.

Here's where I'm at:

I cannot use <% if (whatever) { %> some stuff <% } else { %> some other stuff <% } %> because I cannot access the databound item to make the choice based on its type. I cannot use the <%# %> syntax, which lets me use the databound information, because you cannot code logic like if...then...else. I cannot (rather not) call a function and return a string with the code because what I want to render is complex and contains further nested databound controls. Has anyone found an ingenious way of doing if it is this type of object, display these controls, else display these other controls?

C# - How To Create A Generic/parent Type That You Could Send To Methods Without Having To Define An Overload For Each Type

Mar 5, 2011

I'm trying to create a validation layer that will contain methods to validate all my objects (in my Business Objects layer) .. but when I try to reference both the validation and business objects to each other I get a circular dependency error .. so I've decided to create a new layer (BLL) to validate the objects for me and I'll be able to reference both the validation and the object layers.

so I want to build some kind of class/interface -I don't know what fits more- to be like a generic type or a parent type that my method could accept it as a parameter and check for it's Name/ID property. Instead of defining a new method overload for each object type I have

Forms Data Controls :: Binding A Repeater To A List Of Objects That Have Child Objects?

Nov 17, 2010

have some Objects, lets say Employee and Role defined as below and I have defined relationships in my database that gives me a list of objects say employees and thanks to my framework each employee object also has a Role object linked via the RoleIDID, UserName, Password, Email, RoleIDRoleID, RoleNameSo in code I can do something like this

Employee emp = dataService_GetEmployeeByID(1);
string RoleName = emp.Role.RoleName;

Now here is my problemI can bind any object in a repeater and it works fine for the first level in my relationship

For instance <%# Eval("UserName") %>

But I need to be able to show the details for my child objects as well (Role) so something like this (which does not work)

<%# Eval("Role.RoleName") %>

2- defining a control object for every control inside the repeater ItemTemplate and find it and then assign the data in the column "Name" to ite.Item.FindControl("Name_Lbl")

C# ASP.NET Binding Controls Via Generic Method?

Apr 30, 2010

I have a few web applications that I maintain and I find myself very often writing the same block of code over and over again to bind a GridView to a data source. I'm trying to create a Generic method to handle data binding but I'm having trouble getting it to work with Repeaters and DataLists.

Here is the Generic method I have so far:

[code]....

That way I can just define my CommandText then make a call to "BindControls(myGridView, cmd)" instead of retyping this same basic block of code every time I need to bind a grid.

The problem is, this doesn't work with Repeaters or DataLists. Each of these controls inherit their respective "DataSource" and "DataBind" methods from different classes. Someone on another forum that I implement an interface, but I'm not sure how to make that work either.

The GridView, Datalist and Repeater get their respective "DataBind" methods from BaseDataBoundControl, BaseDataList, and Repeater classes. How would I go about creating a single interface to tie them all together? Or am I better off just using 3 overloads for this method?

Repeater Itemdatabound Event Value Type And Reference Type?

Mar 29, 2010

Im trying to bind a list with datetime objects to my repeater.

if (e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.AlternatingItem || e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.Item)
{
DateTime actualDate = e.Item.DataItem as DateTime;
}

When I want access the itemdatabound event on the repeater Then I get an errormessage which says that DateTime is a valuetype and not a reference type.My solution is that a wrap the datetime in a custom object (reference type) and pass that to the repeater datasource instead of the datetime. But Im wondering if there are other solutions where the repeater takes valuetypes (DateTime objects).

typeof(T) doesn't seem to work.

I ideally want to do a switch statement, and return something based on the Type of the generic (string/int/long/etc).

C# -pass A Generic Type With The User Control?

Aug 19, 2010

In Asp.net Web forms why must a user control be partial? I tried to remove the partial keyword and it says: Missing partial modifier on declaration of type 'test'; another partial declaration of this type exists
Where is the other declaration?I am trying to pass a generic type with the user control how can I do that? I can't unless I change the other declaration too. I couldn't find it so I removed the partial keyword.Note:
you do have 3 files if your making WebApplication but if your making website you only get 2 files?
UserControl.ascx
UserControl.ascx.cs
so in website where is the other declaration?the reason i want generic is because im making a Grid User Control so i want to pass the type the datasource is going to have.

Content Type When Serving A File In A Generic Handler?

Dec 10, 2010

I'm busy writing a handler to serve various documents for download or presentation in web forms pages. The documents range from various image formats, to PDF, to MS Office documents, to generic binaries. My basic draft of the download process is as below:

[code]....

However, I have some misgivings about lumping all documents together as application/octet-stream, and I would prefer, if feasible, to use a more specific content type per document type. I have a DB table for document types where I could store this. Am I going in the right direction, and if so, where can I find a suitable starting list of content types for document types?
