C# - Efficient Gridview Paging Without Datasource Control?

Mar 25, 2010

I am trying to do efficient paging with a gridview without using a datasource control. By efficient, I mean I only retrieve the records that I intend to show.I am trying to use the PagerTemplate to build my pager functionality.In short, the problem is that if I bind only the records that I intend to show on the current page, the gridview doesn't render its pager template, so I don't get the paging controls.It's almost as if I MUST bind more records than I intend to show on a given page, which is not something I want to do.

Currently I load a dataset and call ds.tables(0).rows(0).item(0) for the value. I just want to make sure this is the best way do this.

C# - GridView Paging Using Linq Query As Datasource?

Aug 27, 2010

I am looking for a way to do paging with a GridView when i set the datasource at run time using a linq query. here is my code:

ETDataContext etdc = new ETDataContext();
var accts = from a in etdc.ACCOUNTs
orderby a.account_id
select new
{
Account = a.account_id,
aType = a.SERVICEs.FirstOrDefault().SERVICE_TYPE.service_type_desc,
name = a.SERVICEs.FirstOrDefault().service_name,

[Code]....

But that works well when you use a datatable but not with linq. If I add a rebind in the event, it has to requery 7000 records which can be a little slow. Does anyone know how to fix the paging when using linq like this?

Forms Data Controls :: Listview Paging Error With No Datasource Control?

so instead of a datasource control, I have a Data Access class that I'm using to populate the ListviewI added a datapager and everything pretty much works until I hit the first or last button. Then, I get the following error: Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/>Also, Something was mentioned about ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation - - couldnt' really find an implementationI tried setting:EnableEventValidation="false", but then, all I got was squirelly interaction with all the numbered links (sometimes having to double click them, etc) - no matter what I tried from there on out, even when I removed the enableEventValidation property altogether.

C# - Which Is More Efficient For Rendering A Server Control

Feb 4, 2010

I am outputting the entire HTML for my server control as follows:

public override void Render(HtmlTextWriter output)
{
output.Write(myStringBuilder.ToString());
}

myStringBuilder is a StringBuilder object that is manually built in a separate private method.Is this an efficient way to do it? Or is it better to pass the HtmlTextWriter to my private method and make multiple calls to HtmlTextWriter.Write()?

Asp.net - Custom Paging/sorting For GridView Filled By CodeBehind Datasource?

Nov 15, 2010

I'm coding a report page.In this page,there are two date fields for user to filter the date and the GridView is filled depending on these dates in the CodeBehind (When user click the button view).Now I want toimplement a paging/sorting feature for this GridView.I've researched and see there are default paging for GridView which is not very efficient (my report table may have thousands of records) and custom paging but this requires using ObjectDataSource (which I don't use).Thus anyone can recommend me some approaches that are best used in this situation?

Forms Data Controls :: GridView Sorting, Paging And DataBinding / When Control Causes A Postback GridView Is No Longer Sorted?

Jan 10, 2011

I'm trying to extend the GridView control to enable sorting and paging for any situation.

When using my control I am fetching data from a database and filling a DataSet with it, then binding the GridView upon every page load. My first question would be, is this the correct approach?

To sort the GridView I am overriding the OnSorting method which stores the sort expression and direction in the ViewState, then creates a DataView and utalises the Sort method to sort the underlying data. It then sets the Data Source to this DataView and rebinds the GridView.

Paging is handled by OnPageIndexChanging which simply sets the PageIndex property and again rebinds the GridView.

My problem is; when any control causes a postback my GridView is no longer sorted, presumably because it is persistently rebound. If I don't rebind it then the GridView is empty on postback since the data isn't automatically stored in the ViewState. I have considered saving the data source in the ViewState but I would assume that this is bad practice for large amounts of data? - also DataViews are not seralisable.

The only solution I can think of currently is to override OnDataBound and sort the data every time. This results in a double sort when paging triggers a postback which seems inefficient. Code illustration of this below,

[Code]....

I'm looking for the cleanest 'best practice' solution as this is a learning exercise more than anything else.

C# - Find The Most Efficient Way To Do Source Control In A Small Dev Environment?

May 14, 2010

I work in a group of 4 .Net developers. We rarely work on the same project at the same time but it does happen from time to time.We use TFS for source control. My most recent example is a project I just placed into production last night that included 2 WCF services and a web application front end. I worked out of a branch called "prod" because the application is brand new and has never seen the light of day. Now that the project is live, I need to branch off the prod branch for features, bugs, etc...

So what is the best way to do this?

Do I simple create a new branch and sort of archive the old branch and never use it again?

Do I branch off and then merge my branch changes back into the prod branch when I want to deploy to production?

And what about the file and assembly version. They are currently at 1.0.0.0. When do they change and why? If I fix a small bug, which number changes if any? If I add a feature, which number changes if any?

What I am looking for is what you have found to be the best way to efficiently manage source control. Most places I have worked always seem to bang heads with the source control system in on way or another and I would just like to find out what you have found that works the best.

VS 2010 - Gridview Control Paging Is Not Working In .aspx Page

Dec 13, 2010

I have a gridview control on a .aspx page (content form).

Paging is enabled on gridview control. It displays the page numbers at the bottom of the .aspx page. When I click on a page number say 3, I get error saying the "Exception Details: System.Web.HttpException: The GridView 'GridViewReconresults' fired event PageIndexChanging which wasn't handled."

Do I need to write special code to handle the paging? Because there is a grid in another page and it has bound columns and I didn't write any code for paging and it works perfectly fine.

Here is the code in the .aspx page that I have problem.

Forms Data Controls :: Paging In Gridview Control Asp.net 2.0, MySQL

Feb 20, 2010

I am a new user of ASP.NET 2.0 (VB.NET)
I am facing a problem related to GridView Control

I have a table <UsersDetail> with following structure in MySQL

FIELDNAME | DATATYPE
---------------------------------------
userid | Numeric
Userlogin | Varchar(25)
Userpassword | Varchar(25)
Firstname | Varchar(50)
Lastname | Varchar(50)
---------------------------------------

I wrote a code to fetch data from this table :

Dim Con As New MySqlConnection
Dim Cmd As New MySqlCommand
Dim Adp As New MySqlDataAdapter
Dim DTable As DataTable
Con.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("dbConString").ConnectionString
Cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
Cmd.CommandText = "sp_FetchAllUsers"
Cmd.Connection = Con
Adp = New MySqlDataAdapter
Adp.SelectCommand = Cmd
DTable = New DataTable
Adp.Fill(DTable)
GridView1.DataSource = DTable
GridView1.DataBind()

Basically Gridview controls is used to display data in tabular format.
but due to requirement I changed its layout to columner in following manner

<asp:GridView ID="myGridView" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="false" AllowPaging="True" PageSize="3" Width="520px">
<Columns>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="User ID">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="Label3" Text='<%#Eval("userid") %>' runat="server"></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="User Login">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="Label4" Text='<%#Eval("Userlogin") %>' runat="server"></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Pack Amount">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="Password" Text='<%#Eval("Userpassword") %>' runat="server"></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="For">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="First name" Text='<%#Eval("Firstname") %>' runat="server"></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Validity">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="Last name" Text='<%#Eval("Lastname") %> Months' runat="server"></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>

Now come to the problem, i set the AllowPaging="True" and page size to 3 records/page but when click on paging links it displays the following error :

The GridView 'myGridView' fired event PageIndexChanging which wasn't handled.

Description:
An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Web.HttpException: The GridView 'myGridView' fired event PageIndexChanging which wasn't handled.

Custom Server Controls :: Paging And Sorting Gridview Custom Control Inside Of A Wizard Control?

Dec 24, 2010

here's a situation and I would appreciate your response.

I have programmatically created the Wizard control:

Page_Load(obj s, evargs e)
{
Wizard ClaimDetailWizard = new Wizard();
foreach(int item in selectedItems)
{
//create new step
//added custom control to new step
//add step to wizard
}
//added wizard to a placeholder on a page
}

Based on List I get from Session i added new steps to my wizard To each step I had added a custom control

Each custom control in tern contains another custom Gridview Control in it.

So here's the problem when the page loads for example for two steps. All is good Wizard does what it's supposed to do.

But when I try to use sorting or paging in that custom Gridview. Somehow it displays the gridview I should see in the next step of the wizard.

Also what I'm noticing through debugging. Is that when I press next in the wizard I go back to the original page where I do all of the code specified above, and it recreates the wizzard. But it goes to the next step. Is this the way wizard supposed to work? Just doesn't seem very efficient.
