C# - How To Store/construct Complete Queries, As Using Simple SQL And Variables And "+"

Feb 12, 2011

I am not aware of the correct term used for the following procedure in LINQ but i hope there is a way.

SIMPLE SQL QUERY

select this from table where alpha would be this and that

To construct this sort of thing, I would (IS A REQUIREMENT) normally use variables like this:

[code]....

a thousand tables, i would have to write queries from all tables using there instance, to perform the exactly SAME TYPE select function!!!

what is the way around this

provide some links, source code examples, resources, books name.

Entity Framework - Is Using Public Static Variables For Compiled Queries Bad In Applications?

Aug 19, 2010

I'm coding a business layer for an ASP.NET application. I've created database methods in my BLL as static. I've created public static Func variables to be compiled and used in several different methods, like this:

namespace BLL
public class User
{
public static Func<Context, variable, result> selectUser;
private static void CompileQuery()
{
if(selectUser == null)
{
selectUser = CompiledQuery.Compile......
}
}
public static UserClass Select(int id)
{
CompileQuery();
//uses selectUser
}
public static SomethingElse DoSomethingElse()
{
CompileQuery();
//also uses selectUser
}
}

It'll be used in ASP.NET layer like this: using BLL;

private void AddUser()
{
UserClass user = User.Select(id);
}

My question is, since static variables are not thread-safe, is this a bad design decision? I'm thinking of either implementing a locking mechanism, which makes me think if it'd slow down the application, or using instantiated class approach which makes me wonder if query compiling would be beneficial.

Working With Static Variables / Store The User Specific Information In Static Variables?

Mar 5, 2011

whats the exact use of static variables in overall programming in .net and for asp.net...

Recently i went for the interview where interviewer asked me 2 question which i was not sure for the same..

whats the use of session object, i said sessions are the server side object, they are used when you want to store user specific data at server side, then he asked what if i want to use static variables for the same, i was mum, can anyone tell me how asp.net will behave if i store the user specific information in static variables.If i use cookies which are the best option to store the data at client side (not sensitive one), but what if user has disabled cookies on his machine, will my application would crash.

DataSource Controls :: Filter SQL Queries Based On The Store ID Associated With A User ID?

Jan 16, 2010

I am planning a project for a pharmacy to enter quality control data to generate reports and graphs with Crystal Reports. There are 20 stores, I need to password protect the entrance page, giving each store their own username and password (just one per store is fine), allowing the store to only access that store's data. Each store will have an associated ID in the MSSQL table.I am using the Membership Provider. I know I need to implement user roles for Managers and Stores levels (Managers can run reports for all stores), I wonder if I can set the default store ID for insert/edit templates after that specific store logs in.Basically, I think I need to filter SQL queries based on the store ID associated with a user ID. I have seen a .NET site that, after logging in, you type in a store id into a textbox, and it gives you access only to that stores data. Something like this would work for my situation.Can anyone explain or show me an example for the best method to accomplish this with C#?

Simple Shopping Cart Using Session Variables Using AJAX

Feb 5, 2011

I know there are a million questions out there on how to implement a shopping cart in your site. However, I think my problem may be somewhat different. I currently have a working shopping cart that I wrote back in the 1.1 days that uses ASP.NET session variables to keep track of everything. This has been in place for about 6 years and has served its purpose well. However, it has come time to upgrade the site and part of what I have been tasked with is creating a more, erm, user-friendly site. Part of this is removing updatepanels and implementing real AJAX solutions.

My problem comes in where I need to persist this shopping cart over several pages. Sure I could use cookies, but I would like to keep track of carts for statistical purposes (abandonment stats, items added but not bought, those kinds of stats) as well as ser-friendliness, like persisting their cart so that if they come back it is remembered. This is easy enough if a user is logged in, but I don't want to force a user to create an account if they don't want. Additionally, the way we were processing orders was a bit, ehh, slapped-together. All of the details (color selected, type selected, etc) are passed to paypal via their description string which for the most part is ok, but if a product has selections that are too long for the string (255 chars i believe), they are cut off and we have to call the customer to confirm what they bought. If I were to implement a more "solid" shopping cart, we wouldn't have to do that because all the customer's choices would be stored, in addition to the order automatically being entered into the order processing system (they're manually entered into an excel spreadsheet. i know, right).

I want to do this the right way, but I don't want to use any sort of overblown software that won't really work with our current business model. Do I use a cookie to "label" each visitor to match them with their cart (give them a cookie with a GUID) across pages, keep their whole cart client side, keep the cart server side and just pull it from the db on each page refresh?

C# - Where To Store Sensitive Variables

Apr 4, 2011

This is my first time working on a secure website. It's for a pet project I have.

For security purposes, where is it best to store information like SQL connection strings, database encryption keys, etc? Is it better to use web.config, store them in a class that accesses a database (like dataBaseHelper.cs or something), or somewhere else?

I intend to obtain an SSL cert as well. When communicating with the database, should I always use the secure connection?

Store / Access - Application Wide Variables Or Globals In Asp.net

Feb 8, 2010

What is the recommended or usual way an ASP.net web application(in C# language) can store/access values that are needed accross the various pages in a website. For example a basic company website might need the company's name and other related information available to multiple pages. Where do I declare these variables/values and how do I access them. Coming from c++ application programming I would usually store such data in a Singleton class object.

Dynamic - How To Dynamically Construct A Control Name

Mar 2, 2011

I am iterating through an array:

Dim dbConfig As New pbu_housingEntities
Dim possible() As String = {"FROD", "FRCD", "SOOD", "SOCD", "JROD", "JRCD", "SROD", "SRCD", "SR5OD", "SR5CD"}
For Each value As String In possible
Dim current_value = value
Dim exists = From p In dbConfig.Configs _
Where p.Description = current_value
Select p
If exists.Count.Equals(0) Then
Dim create As New Config
create.Description = current_value
dbConfig.Configs.AddObject(create)
dbConfig.SaveChanges()
Else
Dim update_query = (From p In dbConfig.Configs _
Where p.Description = current_value _
Select p)
update_query.First.Description = current_value
update_query.First.dateValue =
End If
Next

Towards the end of the array you can see update_query.First.dateValue =, I'd like to do something like this: update_query.First.dateValue = "txt" + current_value + ".Text" But I don't want it to return the literal txtcurrent_value.Text, but rather to return the text value of txtcurrent_value.Text. This is easy to do, if you know each control name - but in this case I'm iterating, otherwise I could do:

update_query.First.dateValue = txtNameofControl.Text

C# - Unable To Construct An Entity (complex) Object From A Query

Jun 8, 2010

I am very new to entity, sql, c#, and asp.net so this might be something easily fixed. I am attempting to display all the inactive products stored in my table called products in a datagrid.

var productQuery = from b in solutionContext.Version
where b.Product.Name == search && b.Product.ActiveNumber > b.VersionNumber
select new Product
{
Name = b.Product.Name,
Description = b.Product.Description,
ID = b.ID,
LastNumber = b.Product.LastNumber,
MiddleNumber = b.Product.MiddleNumber,
RSTATE = b.RSTATE,
ActiveNumber = b.Product.ActiveNumber,
LastModified = b.Product.LastModified,
ParentID = b.Product.ParentID,
ProductType = b.Product.ProductType
};
ProductsGrid.DataSource = productQuery;
ProductsGrid.DataBind();

I am getting this error: $exception {"The entity or complex type 'SolutionsModel.Product' cannot be constructed in a LINQ to Entities query."} System.Exception {System.NotSupportedException}

Architecture :: Best Way To Implement Online Ordering For A Store Store Already Built?

I developed an online store for a client and people place orders online for a food ordering place however I am trying to find the best way to have the orders show up for them at the store. Currently I am sending an email and an autoprint software prints it out which works most of the time but not good enough sometimes it doesn't print. Anyone had similar issues or have other alternative solutions you may have heard off? Like I said the site sends an email to the customer and the store's email account.

ADO.NET :: LINQ Entity Framework Query - Construct "nested" Query?

Jan 22, 2011

I have a web app for our golf club. When I compute handicap index for each golfer, I have to select the most recent scores and then a subset of those scores depending on how many rounds of golf the golfer has played. All the scores are entered into a single SQL Express table called "Rounds". Verbally, this is what I'm trying to do:

1) select the twenty most recent golf scores (sort on date descending, "take(20)") [if less than 20 records, then select all available];

2) for this set of records, select the 10 lowest scores (or smaller number if golfer has less than 20 rounds);

3) compute the average round differential for the subset of records, etc. to calculate handicap index (this step is working ok...)

My current VB code has this LINQ query (which is flawed -- it selects the lowest handicap differential scores of ALL records for the filtered user):

[Code]....

How do I modify this query to accomplish items 1) & 2) above? It seems this should be simple, but my experience with queries is still limited.
