C# - Put Build Number In Web.config?
Oct 12, 2010
I'm trying to get my build number into the web.config of an ASP.Net MVC project (long story, but there is a reason)... something like this:
<appSettings>
<add key="version" value="1.0.3936.27150" />
</appSettings>
Right now, I'm doing it with an executable on the post-build event by looking at the assembly to get the version and stuff that into the web.config. It works, but isn't exactly what I was looking for.

I have an asp.net/C# app that uses subversion for source control.
My app automatically increases it's AssembleVersion and AssemblyFileVersion on each build which works like a charm, and displays the build number in the administration side of the site.
We keep track of AssembleVersion and AssemblyFileVersion's when we do deployment, however, when an issue arises and we need to roll back to a certain version, we have no idea which revision to target in subversion.
I have few ideas:
Save AssembleVersion as comment in each file
Have a keyword in commit comments that get's replaced by AssembleVersion on each commit(still need to figure out how to do it)
Updated:
option "1" is actually a stupid idea,cause this will mean that everytime i build, all files will be marked as updated and when i commit, every single file will be updated

I have an add-on for a commercial ASP.NET website. My add-on requires people to merge entries into their web.config, add/overwrite existing files, and add some DLL files to the bin folder. Is there a good and safe way to create an installer than can do this with a wizard type of installation?

I'm struggling to get web.config transformations working with automated builds. We have a reasonably large solution, containing one ASP.NET web application and eight class libraries. We have three developers working on the project and, up to now, each has "published" the solution to a local folder then used file copy to deploy to a test server. I'm trying to put an automated build/deploy solution in place using TFS 2010. I created a build definition and added a call to msdeploy.exe in the build process template, to get the application deployed to the test server. So far, so good!
I then tried to implement web.config transforms and I just can't get them to work. If I build and publish locally on my PC, the "publish" folder has the correct, transformed web.config file. Using team build, the transformation just does not happen, and I just have the base web.config file. I tried adding a post-build step in the web application's project file, as others have suggested, similar to:
<target name="AfterBuild">
<TransformXml Source="Web.generic.config"
Transform="$(ProjectConfigTransformFileName)"
Destination="Web.Config" />
</target>
but this fails beacuse the source web.config file has an "applicationSettings" section. I get the error Could not find schema information for the element 'applicationSettings'.I've seen suggstions around adding arguments to the MSBuild task in the build definition like
/t:TransformWebConfig /p:Configuration=Debug
But this falls over when the class library projects are built, presumably because they don't have a web.config file.

what exactly is the difference between build number and the revision number in assembly.cs file?
For instance the assembly version is 1.2.407.7890
Major = 1
Minor = 2
Build = 407
Version = 7890
Now when i make some change in the projects file and recompile it, only the version number changes. When does the build number changes?
In what scenario does the build number changes?
Also let me know what exactly is AssemblyFileVersion? How is it different from AssemblyVersion?

I really like the new transformation feature for the web.config. It seems to work when I do "Build deployment package" but not when I just want to locally start the debugging using the green arrow. It just uses the web.config without processing theWeb.Debug.config. I can prove that because in web.config I have debug="false" with a transformation in Web.Debug.config so that it gets true but everytime VS asks if it should modify the web.config to enable debugging which it should've done automatically with the following transformation:
[Code]....
Am I missing something here? I used to work with NAnt to modify/create the web.config as a pre-build event but I thought that I wouldn't need it anymore. Am I wrong? The project is a freshly created asp.net mvc 2 web application.

I have a solution which contains a website and various class libraries. The exists on the file system like so:
C:Projects MyWebsitedevMyWebsite.sln
C:ProjectsCoreMyClassLibrary1.csproj
C:ProjectsCoreMyClassLibrary2.csproj
I want to move the App.config file from MyClassLibrary1 project to the bin of the MyClassLibrary2. I want to do this on post build in VS or MSBuild using relative paths if possible. This way anybody checking out the projects will not have to modify any paths if they choose to locate the project in a different location.
I have already tried the following approaches but to no avail.
copy /Y "$(ProjectDir)App.config"
$(ProjectDir).. MyClassLibrary2$(OutDir) MyClassLibrary2.dll.config"

Today I started playing with the web.config transforms in VS 2010. To begin with, I attempted the same hello world example that features in a lot of the blog posts on this topic - updating a connection string.
I created the minimal example shown below (and similar to the one found in this blog). The problem is that whenever I do a right-click -> "Publish", or a right-click -> "Build Deployment Package" on the .csproj file, I'm not getting the correct output. Rather than a transformed web.config, I'm getting no web.config, and instead the two transform files are included.
What am I doing wrong?
Web.config:

I'd like to add build configuration dependant web config files to my empty ASP.NET 4 Web site project. How can I do that? According to this blog entry, VS 2010 is supposed to provide a context menu entry on the original web.config file, Add Config Transform, allowing to add build configuration dependant web.config files to the project. But this context menu entry doesn't exist. What did I do wrong?
Steps to reproduce:
Create an empty ASP.NET 4 Web site project on localhost (IIS)

I have a question regarding a situation that occurs with GridView, ObjectDataSource in ASP .NET application. The GridView is linked to the ObjectDataSource and both are included within an UpdatePanel letting the GridView to fill in an asynchronous way from a form in the same page so it gets more rows as the user enters the data:
<asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
</asp:ScriptManager>
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource1">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="Name" HeaderText="Name" ReadOnly="True"
SortExpression="Name" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Periodicty" HeaderText="Periodicty" ReadOnly="True"
SortExpression="Periodicty" />
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
<asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ObjectDataSource1" runat="server"
SelectMethod="GetSessionNames" TypeName="Simulation"></asp:ObjectDataSource>
<asp:Label ID="Label27" runat="server" Text="Label"></asp:Label>
</ContentTemplate>
<Triggers>
<asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="NewWebSessionButton" EventName="Click" />
</Triggers>
</asp:UpdatePanel>
I start the project with Visual Studio 2008, fill the form and it works correctly. Then I stop the execution: rerun again and the data I entered in the previous run is in the GridView. Is like some sort of cache saved the data from the session before. I checked that EnableCaching property is set to false for the ObjectDataSource. If I Rebuild Web Site in Visual Studio (not just Build) then it works corretly leaving the GridView empty. Is this caused just becuase of Visual Studio? Can it be turned off? And will it happen in the final IIS it will run on?

I have a large solution which has multiple apps which all share some common site elements (masterpages, navigation, etc).
Currently, all of these get built into a single DLL
If my structure looks like:
WebRoot
- Common/
- Shared/
- Images/
- App1/
- App2/
- etc
Is there a build tool which will allow me to build WebRoot.dll, App1.dll, App2.dll? I don't believe this is possible in VS2008 or the MSBuild tool.

I have a TFS build set up to deploy an ASP.net project to a test server.The build works great, and deploys to the test server fine, but instead of putting it into the Website directory that my IIS webserver is configured for, it puts the build into Website_20100511.6
Why is the date suffixed to the directory name? Is there a way to turn that off so I can publish directly to the Website?

I'm serving up PDFs from a SQL db and presenting them in the browser. I'm trying to figure out a way to embed a number in the PDF dynamically so that the recordID for that PDFs SQL record is available to me when the user submits the XML form data. The user hits the submit button on the form and the form submits its XML data to my submission page. If there is some way of changing the submission URL on the fly then I could do a query string to pass my self the recordID. I'm not generating the PDF in code, its being created by hand and then uploaded to my site.EditUser is given a link someServer.com/pdfLink.aspx?formID=5 they go there and that pages pulls a PDF from the DB and displays it. This pulls up acrobat in browser full size so my aspx page isn't in control of submitting the completed form, Acrobat is. The user fills out the form and hits the submit button in the form. This submit button was set up at form design time to point to another page someSite.com/pdfSubmit.aspx The submit button posts the XML data to that page and I can process it. I need the recordID in the query string for the someSite.com/pdfSubmit.aspx page. To do this I would need to modify the PDF to either add the recordID and query string to the submit button's submit URL, or embed it in the PDF else ware. The big question is how do I modify the PDF just before I display it via someServer.com/pdfLink.aspx?formID=5 to do either of these two options.

The following code gives error: "When casting from a number, the value must be a number less than infinity."
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="DATE" SortExpression="date1">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar1" runat="server"
SelectedDate='<%# Bind("date1") %>' VisibleDate='<%# Eval("date1") %>'>
</asp:Calendar>
</ItemTemplate>
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:TextBox ID="Date1" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("date1") %>'></asp:TextBox>
</EditItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
The error occurs at the line <asp:Calendar ID="Calendar1"...>
It errors because there are records with null value for date1 when the records are returned from the database.
Is there a way to specify in the .aspx file telling it to ignore null or display null/blank?

My environment is ASP.Net + IIS 7.0 + Windows Server 2008 + .Net 3.5. I am wondering whether the number of users online and number of active session are the same thing? The other question is, no matter whether they are the same, how to calculate them (i.e. for a given time, what is the number of users online, and related active number of sessions)?

I just installed VS2010 and opened the root machine.config and web.config files for review and I found some errors. In machine.config, the following line has errors in both entries for <Microsoft.VisualStudio.Diagnostics.ServiceModelSink.Behavior>. When I hover the cursor over them I get a tooltip text which displays: "The element 'endpointBehaviors' has invalid child element 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Diagnostics.ServiceModelSink.Behavior'. List of possible elements expected: '...(list of options here)...'. The same problem happens for the second appereance in tag <serviceBehaviors>.
[Code]....
In web.config, there is a tag called <protocols> that has an error with a tooltip text that says "The element 'system.web' has invalid child element 'protocols'. List of possible elements expected: '...(list of options here)...'.
