C# - Forced To Use Process But Need AppDomain - Like Security Policies?
Jul 30, 2010
Maxima.exe is a Computer Algebra System built as a native code rather than a managed code. MyService works as a socket server, it will instantiate a new process of Maxima for each browser submitting mathematics expression to Web Server. I cannot use AppDomain here because Maxima is a native code. However I want security policies provided by AppDomain such as restriction to write data on file system.My question is, how can I get the AppDomain-like security policies when I instantiate Maxima in a process rather than in an AppDomain?

I was trying to block an IP for all the web applications on our Win Server 2003 R2 and during the changes I enabled "Secure Server (Require Security)" in "IP Security Policies on A Local Computer". I was doing that through Remote Desktop and my session was locked immediately (although I have an administrator rights). Now I cannot connect to Remote Desktop again (it doesn't even reach the login prompt) and my web applications doesn't work for any IP. Any ideas how I can get out of this weird situation?

Our user is using integrated windows authentication.
All users hit the login page where they must login with their domain/username/password combination.
Once they login, they can change their password.
Once the password is changed, they are displayed a message and they can navigate through the rest of the site.
I get the following scenarios...
1) User can view one page but not a second page User changes password USer clicks on link and receives page USer clicks on second link and is asked for credentials
2) User can view all pages USer changes password User clicks on link and receives page User clicks on second link (and all links thereafter) and receives page (they are never prompted for credentials)
3) User can not view any pages
User changes password USer clicks on link and is asked for credentials

I'm making use of the new .NET 4.0 Caching namespace: System.Runtime.Caching.Now, i'm just doing some prototype/fiddling with the new API, in order to work out the best fit for the real app.In line with that, i'm trying to create a page (ASP.NET MVC) that basically dumps out everything in the cache, particularly the following info:
Cache Key
Cache Object
Cache Policy (expiry date, etc)
Cache Dependencies (if any)
However, i can't seem to get anything except the key/object.Here's the code i'm currently playing with:

I have a form that uses group validation with the following on btnDonation_Click. However, when I click btnDonation, the page comes back to itself even if everything is valid. Then, I click btnDonation again without changing anything, this is when the page will postback to Confirm.aspx. Do you know what might have caused it?
Code:
Protected Sub btnDonation_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnDonation.Click
Page.Validate("GiftValidate")
If (rbContribType.SelectedIndex = 0 Or cbPrefHAddress.Checked = True) Then
Page.Validate("HAddressValidate")
ElseIf (rbContribType.SelectedIndex = 1 Or rbContribType.SelectedIndex = 2 Or cbPrefOrgAddress.Checked = True) Then
Page.Validate("OrgAddressValidate")
End If
If Page.IsValid Then
btnDonation.PostBackUrl = "~/Confirm.aspx"
End If
End Sub

I am using Microsoft's MVC design pattern and I have a method in my controller, which sets the data source of a gridview. Whilst I can bind all the other values in the gridview, I am stuck setting 4 hyperlinks. The hyperlinks need to work in the explanation given in the link below: [URL]for forcing downloads to keep the location of where files are saved to private, which I want set in the controller.
To fully explain what I am doing, in my controller for the gridview, I am setting the gridview's data source using ICollection, which is an object containing results from a query. From this collection, I extract a value which has the name of a folder which contains a number files. So, what I have done is to cast my collection to a object, to get folder name and then use a foreach loop to get each folder name. Then to get the files inside each folder, I use Directory.GetFiles, which returns a string array - I wrote string[] files = Directory.GetFiles(ConfigurationManager.appsettings["filepath"]+folderName); . I have set 4 properties for each Hyperlink I want to set.
It is at this point where I am stuck, because even though I can get to the files, I am unable to set the Hyperlinks to these files. Each time I try an set the NavigateUrl property, I get the error message Object not set to an instance of an object. Plus, I have two other issues to resolve:1) Even though there are 4 hyperlinks, not every hyperlink will be set. In other words, if there are only two files in the folder, I only want to set the appropriate hyperlinks. So, how can I iterate through the string array, and get each value inside the array to do a check?2) When I set my Hyperlinks in my controller, how do I simply pass the file and keep the file's actual storage location hidden as given in the link [URL]

I am using CreateUserWizard control.. Is there anyway, I can put all the steps in the wizard process into one page. I do not like the idea of sifting through multiple pages to create a user. I would like one page where user goes through different sections (panels/divs) and creates a user ultimately all from one page.

I am doing some database validation when a user logs in to my site inside the login control Authenticate event. However, when the user selects the RememberMe option, the next time he logs in, the login form is never invoked and thus I am unable to perform any additional validation. Is there any way of detecting that the user has just logged in using the information saved on the cookies?

I have a web page hosted on the server and a zip file on the server's file system. The page is spinning off the 7zip process with some arguments (location of the zip file and destination folder for unzipping) but it seems to raise permission issues, of course. For each file in the archive I get "Can not open file [filename]". I tried windows authentication and running the process with a username and password but nothing worked properly. What would be the best way for unzipping the file on the server from security point of view? Ideally, I would also like to have this event driven so the file is unzipped as soon as it arrives on the server (this is when I request the page).

I can not run System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(@"wmplayer.exe") in code behind under IIS, - nothing happens, though I can do it successfully using Visual Studio ASP.NET Development server. I read topic http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555134 and made as recommended: 1) Made ASP.NET worker process run in SYSTEM account 2) Enabled IIS Admin Service to interact with desktop and rebooted serivce. - wmplayer.exe does not start, even its process does not start. I tried start notepad.exe and it partly works - process starts, I see only window frame, but not menu and can not interact with it. The other thing I tried is to put it under out-of-process (IIS virtual folder properties) and gave the process administrative rights (changed identity in Component Services): no result.

I am writing a plugin architecture. My plugin dlls are located in a sub directory from where the plugin manager is running. I am loading the plugins into a separate AppDomain as the following:
string subDir;//initialized to the path of the module's directory.
AppDomainSetup setup = new AppDomainSetup();
setup.PrivateBinPath = subDir;
setup.ApplicationBase = subDir;
AppDomain newDomain= AppDomain.CreateDomain(subDir, null, setup);
byte[] file = File.ReadAllBytes(dllPath);//dll path is a dll inside subDir
newDomain.Load(file);
However. newDomain.Load returns an assembly which the currently domain attempts to load. Because the plugin dlls are in a sub directory, the current domain cannot and should not see these dlls and the current domain throws a FileLoadException"ex = {"Could not load file or assembly ... or one of its dependencies."
The question is, can we load an assembly into a separate AppDomain without it returning the loaded assembly?
I know I can add a handler for the AssemblyResolve event in the current domain and return a null, but I would prefer to not to go this route.

It's my understanding that if you want to use the WCF-Ninject extension, it assumes that you are hosting your WCF services in their own AppDomain.
I'm already using the Ninject.Web extension and asp.net compatibility mode to get at the Membership Provider and Session.
Is there a way utilize my Ninject with my WCF services that are hosted in the same AppDomain as my Web Application?

In my ASP.NET app, I'm attempting to add another directory to be have the DLLs in it shadow copied.
The only method I found that will allow m to do this is AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetShadowCopyPath.
However, this method is marked as Obsolete. MSDN has this to say about it
SetShadowCopyPath(String path) Message: AppDomain.SetShadowCopyPath has been deprecated. investigate the use of AppDomainSetup.ShadowCopyDirectories instead.
However, the AppDomainSetup.ShadowCopyDirectories property doesn't seem to change whenever I set a value to it.
AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetupInformation.ShadowCopyDirectories = "mydirectory;bin"; string test = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetupInformation.ShadowCopyDirectories; // returns bin, which was the original directory
Is there a reason that it won't change and is there a work around?

I have an asp.net web application that allows users to upload files to an 'uploads' directory that is located in the same virtual directory as the web app. Each uploaded file goes into a temporary sub directory that is named after the user's session id. Once I'm finished with the files, I delete the temp sub directory. The only problem is that when a sub directory is deleted, the AppDomain gets recycled and kills all user sessions (using inproc session state). The culprit appears to be a FileChangesMonitor that watches for changes in all sub directories in the application.
The following code works great in IIS 6.0 running on Windows Server 2003 to disable the FileChangesMonitor for sub directories, but for some reason it's not working in IIS 7.0 on Windows Server 2008:
System.Reflection.PropertyInfo p = typeof(System.Web.HttpRuntime).GetProperty("FileChangesMonitor", System.Reflection.BindingFlags.NonPublic | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Public | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Static);
object o = p.GetValue(null, null);
System.Reflection.FieldInfo f = o.GetType().GetField("_dirMonSubdirs", System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Instance | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.NonPublic | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.IgnoreCase);
object monitor = f.GetValue(o);
System.Reflection.MethodInfo m = monitor.GetType().GetMethod("StopMonitoring", System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Instance | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.NonPublic);
m.Invoke(monitor, new object[] { });
I found another solution that disables the FileChangesMonitor altogether here. But this is not the ideal solution as I still want to monitor all other files except for the temp sub directories in the 'uploads' directory. Why does this work in IIS 6.0 and not in IIS 7.0? In IIS 7.0 can you specify sub directories in a virtual folder you want to disable recycling on? Is there another way to do this without using reflection?

How does one control the application recycle settings for an ASP.NET application runnin on mod_mono & Apache ?
On IIS6 & 7 there was an option to specify either a time period, a number of requests, etc. when the AppDomain would be recycled and the application would basically do an Application_End() / Application_Start().
I am seeing the same behaviour on mod_mono & Apache ,but I can't find where to change the settings.

var assemblyName = AssemblyName.GetAssemblyName(assemblyPath);
var assembly = pluginDomain.Load(assemblyName); // crash here

I've written a aspx.net(C#) page that after the user has done what they do on the page they hit a Submit button. The Submit button
1) takes the work the users was producing on the page and writes it to a file.
2) attempts to execute a batch file.
The call to the batch file is executed via:
protected void Execute123EDI()
{
try
{
string File = @"c:80sAdminSendV80s.bat";
lblCancelled.Text = lblCancelled.Text + File;
Process proc = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
proc.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
proc.StartInfo.LoadUserProfile = false;
proc.StartInfo.UserName = "administrator";
proc.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
System.Security.SecureString secPass = new System.Security.SecureString();
string paswd = "123abc";
for (int i = 0; i < paswd.Length; i++)
{
secPass.AppendChar(paswd[i]);
}
proc.StartInfo.Password = secPass;
proc.StartInfo.FileName = File;
proc.Start();
FileStream fs = new FileStream(@"c:80sAdminSendV80sOutput.log", FileMode.Append);
StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter(fs);
sw.Write(proc.StandardOutput.ReadToEnd());
proc.WaitForExit();
sw.Close();
proc.Close();
}
catch(Exception ex)
{
lblDebug.Text = lblDebug.Text + ex.Message + "<br/>";
}
If I watch the processes tab in Task Manager on the web server I see "cmd.exe" under the context of 'administrator' but it just hangs. For test purposes c:SendV80s.bat: copy c: oot.ini c:zzz.txt
If I logon onto the webserver's console and execute SendV80s.bat it works and exits without issue. But when I execute the same batch file via the Submit button it gets stuck executing in Task Manager/Process. I believe this has something to do with the fact that cmd is not running in a full environment/desktop context. I just noticed this on the actual console of the webserver (not in my RDP console but console 0 instead)
A pop-up box stating: CMD.exe Application error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application. And when I click on the OK button my ASPX page's WaitForExit is satisfied and the continues processing normally.

I'm trying to develop a web application that dispatch (Dispatcher) to multiple versions of another webapp on a per-request basis. To to that end, I'm using ApplicationManager.CreateObject to create new AppDomains running the web app in question, but the new app domains seem to be failing to load the Dispatcher's DLL (and I'm copying the DLL over to the web app's bin directory, so I'm pretty sure it's there).
[code]....
The Appbase seems to be pointing at the root of the development server, rather than the path passed in to ApplicationManager.CreateObject and it only seems to be searching directories under the development server which seems strange. how to make the new AppDomain search for the DLL in the web app's root rather than under the development server?

I know that similar questions have been asked all over the place, but I'm having trouble finding one that relates directly to what I'm after.
I have a website where a user uploads a data file, then that file is transformed and imported into SQL. The file could be up to 50mb in size, and some times this process can take 30 minutes or sometimes even longer.
I realise I need to palm off the actual work to another process, and poll that process on the web page. I'm wondering what the best approach would be though? Being a web developer by trade, I'm finding all this new Windows Service stuff a bit confusing, and I just wanted somewhere to start.
So:
Can I do / should I being doing this with a windows service? if so, how?
Should I use WCF? If this runs under IIS, will I have problems with aspnet_wp.exe recycling and timing out my process?
clarifications
The data is imported into sql, there's no file distribution taking place.
If there is a failure, it absolutely MUST be reported to the user. The web page will poll every, lets say, 5 seconds, from the time the async task begins, to get the 'status' of the import. Once it's finished another response will tell the page to stop polling for status updates.
queries on final decision
ok, so as I thought, it seems that a windows service is the best idea. So as to HOW to get it to work, it seems the 'put the file there and wait for the service to pick it up' idea is the generally accepted way, is there a way I can start a process run by the service, without it having to constantly be checking a database table / folder? As I said earlier, I don't have any experience with Windows Services - I wondered if I put a public method in the service, can I call it somehow?
