C# - Get The "typeof" Of A Custom User Control?

Feb 9, 2011

I have a custom user control DatePicker.cs. Inside of another piece of code I have a collection of controls where I am checking the type of the control and doing some logic based on the type. My problem is the following: typeof(DatePicker) Evalutes to:

{Name = "DatePicker" FullName = "cusitecore.cedarsc.UserControls.DatePicker"}

But when I run the debugger and look at the type of the control that is on my web form it is:

{Name = "cedarsc_usercontrols_datepicker_ascx" FullName = "ASP.cedarsc_usercontrols_datepicker_ascx"}

These two things aren't equal so the correct logic isn't getting evaluated. I've tried using Type.GetType("ASP.cedarsc_usercontrols_datepicker_ascx") but this returns null.

Here's what I'm trying to do:

private readonly Dictionary<Type, ControlType?> _controlTypes = new Dictionary<Type, ControlType?>
{
{typeof(CheckBox), ControlType.CheckBox},
{typeof(CheckBoxList), ControlType.CheckBoxList},
{typeof(DropDownList), ControlType.DropDownList},
{typeof(HiddenField), ControlType.HiddenField},
{typeof(ListBox), ControlType.ListBox},
{typeof(RadioButton), ControlType.RadioButton},
{typeof(RadioButtonList), ControlType.RadioButtonList},
{typeof(TextBox), ControlType.TextBox},
{typeof(Label), ControlType.Label},
{typeof(DatePicker), ControlType.DatePicker},
{typeof(CustomSelect), ControlType.CustomSelect}
};................

Custom Server Controls :: Custom Control's Constructor / User To Set That variable In The Properties Window After They Drag The Control Onto A Form?

Mar 4, 2010

I have a custom control which inherit from the Table class and in the constructor, it takes a an integer as an argument. There is no empty constructor.

Is there a way for the user to set that variable in the properties window after they drag the control onto a form.

I know some .NET controls, you can set the source for the parameter to different things like another control's property, QueryString using just the properties window.

Right now, I have to create the control dynamically. I read the query string and then created the object.

Custom Server Controls :: Unable To Use A Web User Control Inside Another Web User Control

Mar 10, 2011

I have a web user control that represents a simple message box. It is used to display simple messages like "Item has been deleted", or "The item was saved successfully".

On the other hand, I have another web user control that represents the item in the form of an editable form (I made this a user control because this is used in two different pages). I want to embed an instance of the message box user control inside the editable form. I am writing this right after the @Control directive:

[Code]....

Instead of using @Register directives, I register the user controls in web.config and so far this has worked just fine.

With the above markup, the project compiles, but whenever I try to navigate to a page that contains this construct, I get an HttpParseException exception. Furthermore, Visual Studio states that the tack w7rc9:MessageBox doesn't represent a known control.

What am I doing wrong?

Custom Server Controls :: Custom User Control That Fills Itself?

Feb 15, 2010

I'm new to all of this, so go easy on me. This should be an easy one. I have created a custom SmartContentBlock user control for a CMS.The control works, but only if I invoke the Fill() function in the Page_init event in the codebehind of the ASPX page. My goal is to modify the class file so that the Fill() in the codebehind is no longer neccesary. So, for reference, here's the gist of the current situtation.Controls.cs

Custom Server Controls :: Save User's Input In User Control?

Mar 28, 2011

I have a user control (ascx file) that contains an interface for users to change the data retrieved from the db. So, I am displaying data and most of this data can be edited by the user. When the user enters text into a textbox, and clicks "Save Changes", the value they typed in is lost and not persisted to the database. I realize now this is because the SaveChanges button does a postback, and the user control gets reloaded with its original valuesbefore the code within my SaveChanges button gets executed. I'm not sure if there are properties I need to set to save the input data, or if I need to write my own code to do it. What is the generally accepted method to do this? (Also, all of the controls in the ascx file are wrapped in an Update Panel.)

C# - Add Child Nodes To Custom User Control Derived From System.Web.UI.Control?

Sep 4, 2010

I would like to know how to add some additional child nodes to a custom user control class derived from System.Web.UI.Control. For example currently I have a control that contains no child nodes and on the design surface looks like the following.

<cust:MyCustomControl id="ctlMyCustomControl" runat="server" attribute1="somevalue" attribute2="somevalue" ></MyCustomControl>

What I am looking for is to have the ability to add n number of child nodes to this control from the design surface and then access their values from the code. So adding to the control stated above.

<cust:MyCustomControl id="ctlMyCustomControl" runat="server" attribute1="somevalue" attribute2="somevalue" >
<childnode1>value1</childnode1>
<childnode2>value2</childnode2>
</MyCustomControl>

It is not clear to me how to access the child nodes.

Does A Composite Server Control(inc. User Control, Custom Server Control) Normally Encapsulate Css Properties?

Nov 7, 2010

If a composite server control normally encapsulate styling information inside, it is an example of code encapsulation and modularization. However if css properties are included inside the composite control, it is not ideal for code/styling separation and css code re-use principles. Now which consideration should be the main consideration?

Add Custom User Control To Published Web Project

Sep 22, 2010

I have a published web project. I want to add some .ascx files (with .cs & designer.cs files) to that published web site. These are simple custom user controls that access methods already part of the original application. Question? Is it possible to just drop these in the published web project without building the entire solution? If not why? When I drop these files in and run my application I get the error: "Parse Error: Could not load type 'the name of my custom controls namespace'". There is not a lot of code to show so this is all I have.

Default.aspx
<%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPages/TwoColumn.master" AutoEventWireup="true"
Inherits="ApplicationName.Web.Default" CodeBehind="Default.aspx.cs" %>
<%@ Register TagPrefix="uc1" TagName="CustomControl" Src="~/Controls/Custom/CustomControl.ascx" %>
<asp:Content ID="content" contentplaceholder="cph" runat="Server">
<uc1:CustomControl ID="cc1" runat="server" CustomProperty="Hello World" />
</asp:Content>
CustomControl.ascx
<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="CustomControl.ascx.cs"
Inherits="ApplicationName.Web.Controls.Custom.CustomControl" %>
<asp:PlaceHolder ID="ph1" runat="server></asp:PlaceHolder>
CustomControl.ascx.cs
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.IO;
using System.Linq;
using System.Web;
using System.Web.UI;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
namespace ApplicationName.Web.Controls.Custom
{
public partial class CustomControl : System.Web.UI.UserControl
{
///My logic
}
}

Again it seems so easy. What am I missing? Or is this not possible?

Databind A Property On A Custom User Control?

How To Create Custom/User Control With Children

Jun 15, 2010

I want a create a custom/user control that has children.

For Example, I want my control to have the following markup:

<div runat="server" id="div">
<label runat="server" id="label"></label>
<div class="field">
<!-- INSERT CHILDREN HERE -->
</div>
</div>

and when I want to use it on a page I simply:

<ctr:MyUserControl runat="server" ID="myControl">
<span>This is a child</span>
<div runat="server" id="myChild">And another <b>child</b>
</ctr:MyUserControl>

The child controls inside my user control will be inserted into my user control somewhere. What is the best way to accomplish this?

The functionality is similar to a asp:PlaceHolder but I want to add a couple more options as well as additional markup and the such. Also the child controls still need to be able to be accessed by the page. (in the example above the page should have the myChild Control on it)

EDIT ------

It can be a template control as long as it allows me to reference the children on the page.

C# - Dynamically Adding A Custom User Control To A Page?

Nov 3, 2010

I have a usercontrol (ascx) that I want to dynamically add to a page.

Neither the control nor the page has a namespace (thanks crappy vendor).

When I use the following, it tells me it cant find the "type or namespace"

StayTunedControl = (UserControler_StayTuned)LoadControl("~/UserControler/StayTuned.ascx");
Page.Controls.Add(StayTunedControl);
StayTunedControl.StayTunedID = Convert.ToInt32(IncludesStayTunedMeta.Value);

After some tweaking to the namespaces, etc, I am now at a point where the 3rd line above generates the following error:

'System.Web.UI.UserControl' does not contain a definition for 'StayTunedID'

I was hoping that casting StayTunedControl as type (UserControler_StayTuned) would fix this.

We need to be able to access that member variable from the ui controls that we use.However we can't seem to get at it? Is it our architecture that is wrong? Or the idea itself - user control getting acces to Master page variables?
