I was referred here by MSDN forums hope this is the right place - I have a custom control (:WebControl) that renders web.sitemap in a specific way. While it runs error free and produces the expected result, at Design-Time it complains
[Code]....
and have tried the SiteMapDataProvider Tag with and without the SiteMapProvider
attribute.Does anybody have (a) any experience with this, or (b) any suggestions as to how to track down the problem?

We have created a Master page that inherits off the asp.net Master class.We have also got ui controls that inherit off the standard asp.net ui control class.Our Master page has a public member variable. We need to be able to access that member variable from the ui controls that we use.However we can't seem to get at it? Is it our architecture that is wrong? Or the idea itself - user control getting acces to Master page variables?

I can load a generic user control just fine in my WCF service doing the following:
UserControl userControl= (UserControl) new Page().LoadControl("~/UserControls/MyControl.ascx");
However i can't seem to find any way to do this
MyControl myControl=(MyControl)userControl;
The reason i need to do this is because my user control has a custom property, person, I need to do the following:
myControl.Person=new Person();
essentially i need to simulate:
<%@ Reference Control="~/UserControls/MyControl.ascx" %>
which normally goes inside asp.net page or master-pages.any way of doing this in an Ajax Enabled WCF Service?

I was setting up permissions for pages in a ASP.NET website with <location> tags in web.config, something similar to this:
<location path="Users.aspx">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow roles="Administrator"/>
<deny users="*"/>
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
However, I also have a web.sitemap which basically contains the same information, i.e. which user roles can see/access which pages. A snippet from my web.sitemap:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<siteMap xmlns="[URL]AspNet/SiteMap-File-1.0" >
<siteMapNode title="Home">
... lots of nodes here ...
<siteMapNode url="users.aspx" roles="Administrator" title="users" description="Edit users" />
...
</siteMapNode>
</siteMap>
Is there some kind of nifty way of using web.sitemap only to configure access? The <location> tags are quite verbose, and I don't like having to duplicate this information.

I have a custom control which inherit from the Table class and in the constructor, it takes a an integer as an argument. There is no empty constructor.
Is there a way for the user to set that variable in the properties window after they drag the control onto a form.
I know some .NET controls, you can set the source for the parameter to different things like another control's property, QueryString using just the properties window.
Right now, I have to create the control dynamically. I read the query string and then created the object.

I have created a user control and am ready to convert it into a custom control. I am trying to follow:
[URL] the steps mentioned in the link.
I am not seeing Build / Publish Web Site option.
I am using VS 2008. I only see Publish User Control but it doesn't give all the settings mentioned below. When I do publish user control, it just copies the ascx file to the desired location. how can I convert the user control to custom control.

Can a custom user control embed another custom user control?is this "bad practice"?eg if i have a custom user control named "Forums" then 2 more custom controls that are "Read_Forums" and "Write_Forums"and all i need to call is "forums" in the page asking - and then it will put in both functionalities..

<siteMapNode roles="*"> <siteMapNode url="~/Default.aspx" title=" Main" description="Main" roles="*"/> <siteMapNode url="~/Items.aspx" title=" Adv" description="Adv" roles="Administrator"/>....
any user can see Adv page. That is a trouble and a qustion : why and how to hide out of role sitenodes.
little addition : <siteMapNode roles="*"> appears to all nodes If I don't do roles="*" on main node, all users can't see Main node ... And I SiteMapDataSource works only if there 1 node

I'm attempting to create a simple menu user control just as outlined here.
The attached code results in an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error, but I can't figure out why.
<%@ Master Language="VB" CodeFile="MySite.master.vb" Inherits="MySite" %>
<%@ Register src="Controls/Menu.ascx" tagname="Menu" tagprefix="my" %>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

I have a web user control that represents a simple message box. It is used to display simple messages like "Item has been deleted", or "The item was saved successfully".
On the other hand, I have another web user control that represents the item in the form of an editable form (I made this a user control because this is used in two different pages). I want to embed an instance of the message box user control inside the editable form. I am writing this right after the @Control directive:
[Code]....
Instead of using @Register directives, I register the user controls in web.config and so far this has worked just fine.
With the above markup, the project compiles, but whenever I try to navigate to a page that contains this construct, I get an HttpParseException exception. Furthermore, Visual Studio states that the tack w7rc9:MessageBox doesn't represent a known control.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm new to all of this, so go easy on me. This should be an easy one. I have created a custom SmartContentBlock user control for a CMS.The control works, but only if I invoke the Fill() function in the Page_init event in the codebehind of the ASPX page. My goal is to modify the class file so that the Fill() in the codebehind is no longer neccesary. So, for reference, here's the gist of the current situtation.Controls.cs

I've wrote a custom membership provider and a custom membership user. So far so good, I can create users / login etc, but when I try to access the custom membership user in code like this;
Code:
Public Function GetOpportunities() As IQueryable(Of Opportunity)
'Dim p As CiseroMembershipProvider = System.Web.Security.Membership.Provider
'Dim _User = p.GetUser(System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity, True), CiseroMembershipUser
Dim _User As Curve.CiseroMembershipUser = Nothing
_User = System.Web.Security.Membership.GetUser() 'Dim _CurveUser As New CiseroMembershipUser
'Return From o In Me.ObjectContext.Opportunities Where o.ClientID = User.ClientID
Return From o In Me.ObjectContext.Opportunities Where o.ClientID = _
_User.ClientID Order By o.ModifiedDate Descending
End Function
I get this error:
Unable to cast object of type 'CustomMembershipUser' to type 'Curve.CustomMembershipUser'. When I put a quickwatch on the object System.Web.Security.Membership.GetUser() it is of type CustomMembershipUser. The quickwatch window generates the text DirectCast(System.Web.Security.Membership.GetUser(), CustomMembershipUser) when I click onto the properties, but reevaluating the expression raises the error.

I have a user control (ascx file) that contains an interface for users to change the data retrieved from the db. So, I am displaying data and most of this data can be edited by the user. When the user enters text into a textbox, and clicks "Save Changes", the value they typed in is lost and not persisted to the database. I realize now this is because the SaveChanges button does a postback, and the user control gets reloaded with its original valuesbefore the code within my SaveChanges button gets executed. I'm not sure if there are properties I need to set to save the input data, or if I need to write my own code to do it. What is the generally accepted method to do this? (Also, all of the controls in the ascx file are wrapped in an Update Panel.)

I want to use a couple of instances of the same control on a page. The user control is intended to display a list of records in a repeater. The aim is that the second control will show a list excluding the IDs in the first control The control has a number of public properties, including IDsInThisList, and IDstoExclude. The query will exclude the IDs in the second property.
What I would like to do is get the record IDs from the first instance of the control (IDsInThisList), and pass them to the second contro as the IDsToExclude.
I have a test page where I am setting the properties of the controls in code. As you might guess, it's not working! The first control displays the top 3 items, as desired, but the second display the records 1-7, rather than records 4-10 because it is not receiving the IDstoExclude from the first control When I response write the IDstoExclude from the first control in my testpage, the string is empty. (if I do it from within the control, it shows the IDs)
How can I get the controls to fire in order and pass values to each other?
Screen grab of test page + uc and test page code attached

I would like to know how to add some additional child nodes to a custom user control class derived from System.Web.UI.Control. For example currently I have a control that contains no child nodes and on the design surface looks like the following.
<cust:MyCustomControl id="ctlMyCustomControl" runat="server" attribute1="somevalue" attribute2="somevalue" ></MyCustomControl>
What I am looking for is to have the ability to add n number of child nodes to this control from the design surface and then access their values from the code. So adding to the control stated above.
<cust:MyCustomControl id="ctlMyCustomControl" runat="server" attribute1="somevalue" attribute2="somevalue" >
<childnode1>value1</childnode1>
<childnode2>value2</childnode2>
</MyCustomControl>
It is not clear to me how to access the child nodes.

i have a customized gridview.my grid is able to sort for each column just by 1 click in the header without any setting and overloading methods such as sorting,etc by user(programmer).(i do this successfully and work fine)users(programmers) maybe add each column in grid.such as template field,hyperlinkfield,boundfield... .for sorting, i must access datafield of columns.i can access boundfield column by this code.i can access datafield and header text and ...
sample:
for (int j = 0; j < this.Columns.Count; j++)
{
BoundField bf;[code]....
but i can access control in the templateField.such as ColumnBound.
sample: <asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("Name") %>'></asp:Label>
i want access "Name" (Bind ("Name") or Eval ("Name")) .how can i?there is a point: i dont now what is the ID (in this case "Label1") of control in templatefield.

I have seen a lot of examples posted on how to create a Custom SiteMap Provider which is directly linked to the Business Logic in the Presentation Layer, however, I would like to write a Custom SiteMap Provider which inherits from StaticSiteMapProvider and
is driven by the database. In addition, I would like to expose all of this logic behind WCF Services.
Are there any samples on how to implement a Custom SiteMap Provider over WCF Services since I am having a hard time trying to figure out exactly how to put a solution following this architectural pattern together.

I have a ASP.Net project that is setup in such a way that it can be dropped into any site and "just work." All the paths are relative to the current file, not relative to the "~". The paths are determined by ThePath = this.TemplateSourceDirectory;
This is working for everything expect registering a custom control that is created and added to one of the pages. I can add the control just fine with the Page.LoadControl but I cant cast it as the correct type to access anything.
How can I add a reference to the class from within the code itself?
