C# - Load A Definition File At Application Start Located In A Virtual Path?
Jun 28, 2010
How do I load a definition file which contains some start up logic at Application_Start?
I only know the virtual path but not the server physical path. How do I convert the virtual path to server path without Server.MapPath()
I am not sure I can access httpcontext or not in the application start stage.

I ahev seen many discussion related to this , but I could not find proper answer , I have live web site set up on IIS 6, and set virtual path MYSite and then phisical path to the web.config file on actual location.
I have copy this site to another server for the purpose of further development, so I need to run production site exactly same as live site , i can do edit in production and update pages to live.
Once I have copied the site give this error virtual path '/includes/menu.htm' maps to another application, which is not allowed
i have master page include menu as html files <!--#include file="../includes/topmenu.htm"-->
I have open site in IIS 7 and add virtual directory and gave a name (not same as live) and choose physical path to the root folder of the site. In IIS 7 I cannot give web.config file for the path, it should be folder. and I have change identity in apppool to Network Service and gave readaccess permission to folder.

How can i resolve a virtual path to a file into a path, suitable for the browser, from within a generic .ashx handler?
e.g. i want to convert:
~/asp/ClockState.aspx
into
/NextAllowed/asp/ClockState.aspx
If i were a WebForm Page, i could call ResolveUrl:
Page.ResolveUrl("~/asp/ClockState.aspx")
which resolves to:
/NextAllowed/asp/ClockState.aspx
But i'm not a WebForm Page, i'm a generic handler. You know, that IHttpHandler object with all kinds of things injected:

I created a virtual directory in the Visual Web Developer, according to this post:
[URL]
I want the user to upload / download documents in the mvc app to that virtual directory. When a document is uploaded, I'm specifying the path to the document to be stored for later retrieval like so:
~/VirtualDirectoryName/FileContent.docx. But when I try to open that as a link in th app,using ResolveUrl, it appends the port number after localhost like so,[URL], I get a document not found, since it really should be, [URL].

I want to run my new web application with forms authentication under the ASP.NET Development WebServer (Cassini), but not at site root "/" (rather, at the path it will reside in production; "/New").However, the build process gives the error:
"It is an error to use a section
registered as
allowDefinition='MachineToApplication'
beyond application level.This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.
New.MvcWebobjdebugcsautoparameterizeoriginalweb.config"
Now, I understand what it is saying.I have forms authentication enabled in my web.config in a virtual directory.The error goes away when I remove the web.config, or remove the "virtual path: /New" debugger configuration, or move debugging from Cassini to IIS and manually create an application at "/New".
But it is only a 'virtual' directory in the mind of the Build System. The path IS application-enabled in a production IIS setting. Also, if I remove the web.config, Cassini will happily publish "http://localhost/New" as an application (for example, Server.MapPath("~") returns my project directory without the "/New" suffix); however I need forms authentication (an application-level web.config parameter) enabled in it.How I can avoid this build error while retaining my desired features?
The project is currently configured for "file-system" site development. This and Cassini are supposed to make it easier for my content creators to participate in development and testing with their local copy of VS2010, without having to install IIS on their Windows PCs. I will also one-click publish to my local IIS for testing, then package/publish/deploy to public test, then finally publish to production. In my mind I imagine Cassini being a very helpful part of this whole process.

* ASP.NET 4.0
* Use Visual Studio Development Server
* Virtual Path: /New

I am trying to convert the virtual path to a physical path but don't seem to have Server.MapPath or HttpServerUtility.MapPath available in my handler. I add the System.Web namespace with no luck.
string virtualTargetFolder = String.Format("~/UserImages/{0}/Images/", user.ProviderUserKey.ToString());
string physicalTargetFolder = System.Web.HttpServerUtility.MapPath (virtualTargetFolder);

What is the right approach when users (authenticated domain admins) should be able to start batch jobs (usually exe files) from an IIS (7.x) aspx (c#) page? This is an intranet site. The batch jobs have to run on the web server as Domain Admins. The website pool is executed by network service or some similar restricted account in AD.
Approaches I can think of (and their disadvantages):
1. Start exe file with System.Diagnostics.Process.Start with another account. This feature is disabled in IIS 7.x, how do I allow it?
2. Create a sheduled task and call scheduled task-api. This unmanaged dll is giving VS compiler warnings because it's unsafe to call from managed code.
3. I suppose there's a better approach, because the previous suggestions doesn't appear safe or robust.

I want to have an ASP C# WebSite that loads a simple CSV File and present it in a GridView control (at least for a start).
I already have a piece of code that do almost all of the work, what i miss / unable to make it work is setting correctly the "Data Source".
The CSV file that I want to load is located on different server in the network (path is " d47vcpublicJoeASPTest").
Here is the code I wrote:
[code]...
I get the following error:
'd47vcpublicJoeASPTest' is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.

I have a simple windows form app that I need to get the file path for. I am placing a config file in the same directory and I need to be able to get the path to that file.
I have used
Application.CommonAppDataPath
but that returns the path with 1.0.0.0 at the end.
and
Applicaiton.StartupPath
but that returns the path with indebug at the end
Is there anyway to get the path to just the main file directory without anything appended to the end?

I have a folder called GUI. Inside GUI thers another folder called PDF and inside this folder, there are some PDF files. This folder (GUI) is uploaded to the server too. Then I have a WebForm with some ImageButtons. When I click one of these ImageButtons, I want the file to open in a new tab. I tried with the following code:
[Code]....
As you can see, I build the path using the tooltips of the different ImageButtons. The ToolTip = File Name I want to open. When I try this in debug mode, it works. It opens the pdf file in a new tab. However when I publish my website and upload it to the server... it doesn't work... when I click an ImageButton I get the following exception: No application is associated with the specified file for this operation

I am trying to register the route collection in .net based on each session. The code I have works fine, you goto website/username and it loads the correct sub pages, but you have to restart the application to goto website/username2 to load those sub pages. But when the application is restarted the second one works, but then not the first one. Is there some way to create a different route collection per session not per application using system.web.routing.
