C# - Membership Services Is Always Creating Two Accounts?

Jul 17, 2010

I am using the ASP membership services to create and manage users. I notice that on user account registration everything works fine... Until I call Roles.AddUserToRole, and suddenly I get a second user account created in the aspnet_users table. I am quite certain that I should only ever have one user account in the database per registered user...

Creating/Exposing WCF Services From An Existing Application?

Feb 24, 2011

We need to expose some services (i.e. AddressValidatorService, CustomerFinderService) that currently reside in an ASP.NET application to other applications within our organization. Exposing these services via WCF seems like a natural fit, but I don't see any best-practices for how to pull these common services into a WCF wrapper in such a way that my existing ASP.NET application can continue to use them with minimal code changes and/or awareness that the service they are consuming is no longer in-process. I'm especially looking for recommendations on how to structure the existing ASP.NET solution and whether to host our new WCF in the same solution or in some new shared WCF solution referenced by both our ASP.NET application and external callers.Also, is it bad practice to simply promote the DTOs currently only consumed in-process via ASP.NET to full fledged data contracts or is it preferable to create duplicate DTOs that are explicitly decorated with [DataContract]?

Membership Services Is Separate From Session / Forms Auth Token Is Still Hanging Around In The Browser

Feb 9, 2010

In our application, we have a need for a user to "impersonate" a different user. Think of it as a hierarchy -- Bob is above Frank in a hierarchy. Bob is logged in, and he needs to do things in the system for a short time as Frank. So, we have given Bob a list of users that report to him, and an impersonate link. He clicks on this link, and, behind the scenes, I log Bob out, and log in as Frank. I also set a session variable that tells me that really Bob is they guy who is the user. Also, Bob (acting as Frank now) has a nice little link at the top of every page that says "Stop Impersonation."

In addition, when Bob is impersonating Frank, Bob is restricted from doing some things, like changing Frank's password.

This was working great, until we encountered a situation where, if the session (I think -- getting confused here) gets destroyed (such as when I copy up new code and dlls to the live site), then when Bob clicks on "Stop Impersonation" he gets redirected to the default page, and is still logged in as Frank, but without the Impersonation session variable. So, now Bob really is logged in as Frank, and can change Frank's password (among other things).

How is it that a session variable (Impersonation) gets destroyed, but I guess the session is still hanging around, because it doesn't make the user log in again?

This is a somewhat serious bug for how our system works (bug in our code, I'm sure, not in .Net). We are using ASP.Net c#, aspnet membership services, .net 3.5, forms auth...not sure what else you need to know.

EDIT: Updated information. Looks like when "something" happens, for instance, when I recompile some dlls and copy them to the webserver, the session gets dumped. Or, rather, the variables in the session get dumped. The session id stays the same. I do get to check for Session.IsNewSession and it returns true, even though the id is the same as it was before.

Just like Utaal mentioned, Membership Services is separate from Session, so it's forms auth token is still hanging around in the browser, but my session variable telling me that that isn't really the user who is controlling the browser isn't there anymore.

EDIT: Sky, here is what I'm doing to authenticate a user. I can't figure out where I would insert a ticket into this flow:

if (Membership.ValidateUser(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text))
FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(txtUserName.Text, false);

Creating A Website With Membership And User Login?

Mar 2, 2010

Environment: W2K8R2 x64 +SPn..., Office 2007 +SPn..., Visual Studio 2008 + SP1+ SPn..., SqlExpress2005 +SPn..., SQL Std 2008 +SPn...

2 Problems...

1) No matter how I try Default.aspx never shows up as the StartPage even though I've told it to, the Login.aspx Page shows up first, so the rest of the walkthrough seems strange....

2) I'm a dummy when it comes to SMTP so I can not seem to get the SMTP to send a message to the User supplied e-mail address....

I want to use this methodology for many Web-Sites I have planned, but if it doesn't work then perhaps not....

Security :: Creating A Custom Membership Data Provider?

Apr 18, 2010

so after a short talk with some people around ASP.NET MVC forum I took a huge step and chose to create my own Custom Membership Data provider.. so I logged into sweet google and started searching , it doesnt look that hard and seems totally possible for me , that's what i thought...

So now I opened visual studio , and started to think on few things .. So before I would start typing code , I would like to ask those questionsSo i would know better

1. when I build an SQL object , or XML or w.e object, how do I know which fields I need for my table ? should i just copy them from aspnetdb or is there somewhere it is written?

2. how the heck do I copy lines from webconfig ? and should I get those lines like "reset password" from web config or not?

3. I saw some parameters in "create User" called providerKey or something like that, and also MembershipState ? what exacly are those ?

4. last question: the functions get username , and password and stuff like that , but what If i want to create my own User Entity , is there a way to change what the function gets ? or should i just make another class that get my custom UserEntity and let the first class to send her the userentity as repository ?

This value, MembershipService.MinPasswordLength, is zero (0). Obviously, this is coming from my class. I can't have a set because the abstract class has this as a read-only property.Why doesn't the MembershipProvider read this value from the Web.Config? What am I missing?

VS 2005 - Creating Website With Membership And User Login

Oct 13, 2015

I am taking MSDN's walkthrough on Creating a Web Site with Membership and User Login. I have some free time and am taking a look at some topics I'm not 100% clear on. So this isn't for a live site; just for my own edification. I set up a user in the web site administration tool then another one in the CreateUserWizard control. I was surprised that in the control it let me create the 2nd user with the same email id as the 1st so I was looking around at how to prevent this. I found requiresUniqueEmail="true" that goes in web.config, in this block:

Code:
<membership defaultProvider="SqlProvider" userIsOnlineTimeWindow="20">
<providers>
<add name="SqlProvider"
type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider"
connectionStringName="SqlServices"
enablePasswordRetrieval="false"
enablePasswordReset="true"
requiresQuestionAndAnswer="true"
passwordFormat="Hashed"
requiresUniqueEmail="true"
applicationName="MyApplication" />
</providers>
</membership>

Which I believe would be the solution. Is that right? My problem is what do I set all those other attributes to in the block? All I really want is requiresUniqueEmail but it seems I have to specify a connectionstring also but I don't know what this would be. The website is using ASPNETDB.MDF which got created in App_Data after I ran the administration tool for the first time (I believe). So I need to explicitly define a connectionstring to that DB now that I want to require a unique email?

Security :: Creating Membership User Using SQL Server Management Studio

Jul 9, 2010

I'm trying to convert existing user accounts ( MS Access and Classic ASP) to ASP.net membership user account. (I have imported to SQL server but lives in different table in the same database as aspnet membership)

--- Here is basic info of My userinfo table ---

-I have table contains user information. I would like to create .net membership user based on the data.

-Table contains about 30000 rows
-Table Name: customers

-Fields: netUserID (unique identifier generated by SQL server)- I need this to join my table with .net membership tables email_address(email address was used as userID as well as email),CreationDate password, etc

--- Here is what I would like to convert ---

-Customer.email_address = aspnet_Membership.Email
-Customer.email_address = aspnet_Users.UserName
-Customer.netUserID = aspnet_Users.UserID and aspnet_Membership.UserID
-Customer.password = ASP.net Membership.password
-Customer.creatationDate = aspnet_Membership.CreateDate

--- Here are questions ----

1. When I create a user from web site (web application), this is pretty much everything that you need to enter (email, username, password)

In order to create valid users for membership provider using SQL Server Management Studio, do I have to add more information ? or do they automatically generated by SQL server? ie. LoweredEmail, LoweredUserName etc

2. If I have to include every single fileds in Insert command, are there any SQL statement template to create valid user for membership provider?

3. I believe I will have a problem entering aspnet_Membership.UserID because it's unique identifier. Do I have to change data type temprary in order to insert UserID for aspnet_Users and aspnet_Membership?

4. What would be the best way to achive this?

Configuration :: Deploy Application That Uses Application Services Membership Provider

Aug 25, 2010

Apologies if this seems obvious, but after a week searching I can't find a clear answer to my problem.

I have developed an application in Visual Web Developer 2010 Express that uses the asp.net application services membership provider. It works well in development on my machine (data in the ASPNETDB.MDF database).

I packaged my application and deployed the relevant files with FTP to my shared hosting provider.

I took a copy of the ASPNETDB.MDF and restored it to the SQL Server 2008 on my shared hosting. I can connect to this through the Database Explorer in Visual Web Developer, but it doesn't contain any schema or data.

I know once I have the database in production I will have to make sure the connection string in web.config is poiting to it, but I don't know how to get the DB to production in the first place.

Security :: Built-in Membership Framework And Has Implemented Own Provider By Creating A Class That Inherits From MembershipProvider?

Jan 23, 2011

used the built-in Membership framework and has implemented his own provider by creating a class that inherits from MembershipProvider (found in System.Web.Security). I actually went ahead and created a custom provider which inherits from MembershipProvider. The problem is that there are several methods I do not really need. Also, the schema is totally different. Plus, most methods return a MembershipUser which means my User class has to inherit from it as well. So really, what benefits does the MembershipProvider and the whole Membership framework add to my system? Do these benefits justify the fact that I won't be using most of the methods on the class?
