Calling .NET Functions/webservices From Classic Asp?
Mar 9, 2010
I am using one webservice, which is for .NET platform, for address validation.Its running successfully on .NET (C#). However, I also want to use the same service from classic asp (legacy code) pages. Would appreciate if someone could give a clue how togo about it? Here are some ideas that I came up with and would appreciate if you could add to it

I have a JQuery template, and I want to call a webservice and populate the fields in it. The issues I am having are, I'm not sure how to pass parameters in my $.ajax call (ideally, I want to pass a dictionary so I can pass as many or few parameters as I want). I tried data: { Key : Value } but get a 500 server error saying something about not a valid JSON primative.
Once the webservice is called, how can I get my data back in a JSON string that is compatible with a JQuery template? My webservices usually get a List and my jquery template works with a JSON object.
The problem is basically the format of data between client and server. My webservice call works fine, it's simply a problem of JSON and data. Edit: I have succeeded in calling the webservice with a dictionary, I am now trying to figure out how to get the data back. I'm getting a circular reference error.

I am new to ASP and ASP.net.I have just started working on a legacy ASP classic project and been given a sample that makes a remote call in ASP.net.Is it possible to call the ASP.net page from ASP?Are you they compatible.My impression so far is that they aren't compatible, but perhaps. I'm wrong.I mean the .net project could be called with parameters and kept seperate I guess?Does anyone have any experience with similar problems or have any tips they can share?

I've a pre-supplied public function in classic asp that creates a hash value - it is pretty complex and I'd rather not convert it to .net if at all possible (mainly as I don't understand half of what it does!) I'm running it under IIS7 on VWD2008 express. How would you call a function in that asp file? do you have to redirect or as it is #included into the asp.net file, is there an eaiser way? At the moment the complier does not spot the function and says it is not declared.

I want to check two conditions in the OnClientClick event of an asp.net button control. I tried this but it is only checking the first function.
OnClientClick="javascript:shouldSubmit=true; return checkFunction1(); return checkFunction2();
What is the correct way do it?

I have a JavaScript-based timeline which needs to use data from an SQL server. The queries and the JSON conversions have been worked out in the form of C#.NET functions within a code file related to an .aspx page. So for a complete newbie to ASP.NET, how do you set up a function call like this from JavaScript?I would love it if someone had some simple example code I could learn/get some pointers from.Edit: I am using .NET 3.5

I get this error: Cannot refer to an instance member of a class from within a shared method or shared member initializer without an explicit instance of the class.
Partial Class _Default
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
<WebMethod()> _
Public Shared Function ParseData() As String
Dim value as string = GetValue()
End Function
Private Function GetValue() as String
Return "halp"
End Function
End Class
I know it has something to do with the fact that the first function is shared and the second function should probably be Public as well but I don't fully understand the reason behind it. Probably not relevant but I'm calling the web method from some javascript.

I have a user control which opens a new window for some item selection. Once an item is selected on that window, the item ID should be passed to a callback javascript function in the user control. In order to have a unique callback function name in the user control (it may have multiple instances on the same page), I added the user control ID to the function name as follows (defined in the ascx file):
function OnItemSelection_<%=this.ID%>(selectedItemID)
{
OnItemSelection("<%=SomeControl.ClientID%>", selectedItemID)
}
Where OnItemSelection is defined in an external js file:
function OnItemSelection(controlID, selectedItemID)
{
$(controlID).do_something(selectedItemID);
}
The issue is that now I'm not sure how the new page can call the "right" function (of the user control instance where it was opened from). The only idea I have in mind so far is passing the name of the callback function in the query string:
var CallbackFunction = function(selectedItemID)
{
window.opener.<%=Request.QueryString["CallbackFunctionName"]%>(selectedItemID);
}
or maybe just the opening user control ID:
var CallbackFunction = function(selectedItemID)
{
window.opener.OnItemSelection_<%=Request.QueryString["UserControlID"]%>(selectedItemID);
}
My questions are:
1) Is it a bad practice passing javascript function names (or user control IDs) like that (I suspect it is)?
2) What could be better way to handle this scenario? Edit: Another way I'm considering now is declaring a global variable in the user control (registering it from the code behind so it'll appear only once). Then, when opening the new window, it's possible to assign the relevant function to it (OnItemSelection_<%=this.ID%>), and call it from the new window. Seems much cleaner than passing user control data through the query string.

I have a page with three HTML labels and their corresponding ASP.NET gridviews contained within divs. Now while learning jQuery, I am trying to achieve two things:1. Change the css class of the lables upon mouse hover/out.2. Slide up/down the grid div upon clicking of the labels.It looks to be working as expected, but I wish to know if I am doing it the right way.My complete jQuery code is:
$(function ColorChange(ID) {
$("#" + ID).toggleClass("gridLabel");
});
$(function ShowHide(GID) {
$('#' + GID).slideToggle('slow');
});
And I am calling these function from onmouseover, onmouseout and onclick events of the label controls passing in the label ID as parameter. As an example:
<label id="lblWebComp" class="gridLabelDefault" onmouseover="ColorChange('lblWebComp')"
onmouseout="ColorChange('lblWebComp')" onclick="ShowHide('gvDivWC')">
Web Components
</label>
Kindly let me know if this is the best way to achieve these effects? Don't I have to right the document ready function in the jQuery code?

I have a page that contains a few user controls which all use an id in a querystring. I want to change this so that the page can send the id to the user control and can call a function on the user control.
Also is it possible for the user control to get the id from the page or a control on the page as its parent?

I have an application that has JS calling ASMX files to do asyncronous requests, using ASP.NET AJAX.
The problem is that I use always the same "onError" function, and now I don't know how to identify the method that rised the error, and it is giving me a lot of problems to debug errors. The parameter "data" of the onError method does not give enough information, for
example:
en System.ComponentModel.BaseNumberConverter.ConvertFrom(ITypeDescriptorContext context, CultureInfo culture, Object value)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToTypeInternal(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer, Boolean throwOnError, Object& convertedObject)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToTypeMain(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer, Boolean throwOnError, Object& convertedObject)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToType(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer)
en System.Web.Script.Services.WebServiceMethodData.StrongTypeParameters(IDictionary`2 rawParams)
en System.Web.Script.Services.WebServiceMethodData.CallMethodFromRawParams(Object target, IDictionary`2 parameters)
en System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.InvokeMethod(HttpContext context, WebServiceMethodData methodData, IDictionary`2 rawParams)
en System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.ExecuteWebServiceCall(HttpContext context, WebServiceMethodData methodData)
Is there any way to know the webmethod that raised the error?

I am attempting to call an ASP.NET page from a classic ASP page on the same machine. The ASP page is located in c:inetpubwwwroot. The ASP.NET page is located in C:InetpubwwwrootWebServiceWrapper
Here is the ASP code to call the page:
Dim objHttp, strQuery
set objHttp = Server.CreateObject("Msxml2.ServerXMLHTTP")[code]....
The ASP.NET code, which calls a web service and sets a cookie, works if I call it from the browser directly. However, using the Msxml2.ServerXMLHTTP object, it does not. The cookie is not generated and there is no error. There are no events in Event Viewer.The ASP.NET page was developed in Visual Studio 2005, .NET 2.0. Changing the POST to a GET has not helped.

I am working on an asp.net application (.net 4 framework) design and was wanting to know what are the pros and cons and best practices for using webservices vs WCF techology? This application will eventually be used by outside clients to consume data. When would you use WebServices and when would you use WCF? Is one more scalable than the other?

I am using webservice and Javascript, and in my javascript function, there's a function called onComplete(data).Now my problem is, I want to get 2 datas instead of one data argument in that oncomplete, is it doable? That "data" is the result of call from my webservice. So I am looking for something like this: onComplete(data1, data2) so that I can display it back to my aspx page
div1.text = data1
div2.text = data2

I was wondering what the major differences are between controllers and webservices. I understand webservices can receive postbacks via ajax while controllers cannot. Also, when you put a webservice in a MVC site, what file structure do you use to store it? Just create a single services folder?
