When I click the security tab in Asp.Net Web Application Administration the ASPNETDB.MDF database is not created.
I am using SQL Server 2005 and MS Visual Studio 2008.
I am using Visual Studio 2008 Pro SP1. Every time I try to access the security tab in Web Application Administration Tools I get this message:
There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
I'm working on a website where it should be possible for registered users to upload word documents. The administration of users is done through Membership and Profiles. When the documents have been uploaded, the following needs to be achieved:Non-registered users should not be allowed to download documents I should be able to control which users that has access to which documents I should be able to register which user downloads which documents I should be able to track how many times a document has been downloaded
Can this be achieved be using Membership and Profiles?

The schema is there and i configure web.config for using roles.

I need some fresh input on how to structure a control panel that I'm building. Here's a little background:
The purpose of the system is to allow the submission of online forms. The forms are stored and processed in a database. Currently there are 3 departments that each have their own set of forms, and each department processes their forms a little differently. The staff should log in and process forms for their respective department (so each department only sees their submissions).
Almost all forms go through a workflow of sorts: 'new submission'-->'in progress'-->'completed', although this may vary.
Right now I've got it mapped out to have a page for each dept. that displays the new submissions, completed forms, etc. (new.aspx, inProgress.aspx, completed.aspx). Here's the question--should I have only one completed.aspx page and use it for all departments (hiding and showing forms based on the employee/department that is logged in), or should I set up three different control panels with three different completed.aspx pages--one for each department?
login control portion of Murach's web dev w/ c# book. According to the books instructions, you create a Login.aspx page, add the login control to the page, and create the users and roles for the directories within the asp.net web site configuration tool. I still do not get prompted for user name and passord to access the pages I want to be secured. Why is this? Isn't the asp.net configuration tool supposed to edit the web.config file? I'm trying to follow the book to the letter and ensure that I am following correctly before posting for answers online. According to the book you do not have to edit anything or write code withing login.aspx page.

View 1 RepliesI have just installed Visual Studio 2010 trial. Previously I have been using Visual Studio Web Developer 2010 Express. Now every time I try to invoke the ASP.net Cofiguration tool either via the icon or through the Project File Menu item, I get the error message "An error was encountered. Please return to the previous page and try again." I am trying to develop a bog standard Silverlight Business Application. There are no other diagnostics. Is there anywhere I can look for more clues or anything else to do to alleviate the problem? or is this something peculiar to the trial version I am using?
I also think it might have something to do with the fact that I have created this Silverlight Business App on a directory on my D: drive and not the normal, default c: drive path and maybe the web sit admin tool is looking somewhere else. Could this have something to do with it? If so what is my remedy?
since installing VS2010 I have problems with configuring membership. Using a online sql database what I prepared with the aspnet_regsql tool tables are there connection string is ok! when I open the ASP net config tool, I do not manage to select the membership provider. Underneath my web config file. can sombody tell me what is wrong??

Is anyone able to see Web Site --> ASP.NET Configuration if you are creating a web application using File --> New Project --> Visual C# --> Web. If so, how and where?
Base on what I've tried, the menu Web Site --> ASP.Net Configuration appears only if you create a website by File --> New Website.
What I am actually trying to find is the Web Site Administration Tool (WSAT).

I have reinstalled SQL Server 2008 express and have run the command line administration utilites. When I try to run the administration tool, get the following error when I click on the security tab is

I have ensured that I have user instances are enabled
When I click on Choose Data Store I get the following error

I have two .NET applications X and Y
a. I want to have User A as a common user for both application X and Y.
b. User A can have different roles on X and Y. Eg. Read permission on Y and Write Permission on Y.
How do i configure ASP.NET membership to achieve about functionality.
We are using membership provider for LDAP authentication. It is working as it should.
But what all configuration settings I have to do so that
all the future requests to this application run under the security context of the Logged in user account not through the some default user set in IIS.
We need to have this working because all the permissions on the database are based on the logged in user.
We are using form authentication for LDAP authentication. And having impersonation = true in web.config.

My website security is configured with "Windows Integrated Security" only (anonymous is disabled).
I also want to set a specific account to run the w3wp.exe process using the
Application Pool Identity to a domain account.
Running directly from the server works without any problem but from remote computers I always get the authenticaion window then the 401.1 error (after 3 attempts).
It seems that its the combination of "Windows Integrated Security" along with the "Application Pool Identity" that causes the problem. When I disable one of the two it works properly.
My server is Windows Server 2003 R2, running IIS 6.0.
i developed an asp.net(2.0) applicaions which contains the attachments of the clients . these attachments are saved in the shared folder and retrive the file when the user requests.if i maintain the application and the shared folders in the same system it will work properly.if i maintain the application in one server and the file folder in the other server i face a lot of security issus like1.Access Denied2.Couldnot find the part of the path......for this i made an common account for the application server and the file server and also set impersonation to true.Even the i got the couldnot find the part of the path error.i already gave the everyone with full control to the shared folder and i added the common account and gave it to full controlIs there is any alternate for the save and retrive the files to and from the shared folder.

Before I was using database for security logic where in I was putting some codes in comma format and was looking that for specific control on form load but it have disadvantage that when some user have access to database that can alter make problem.
I have a half dozen sites on my server and I would like to get some info from IIS7 to display in the footer of each page (as long as you are an admin of course). I am going through the ServerObject and found Sites but am not finding anything obvious for "this site". What should I do to get at the information for the exact site in IIS7 that the page is running on?
