Security :: Running Application Under The Security Context Of The Logged In User (LDAP Authentication)

Mar 17, 2011

We are using membership provider for LDAP authentication. It is working as it should.

But what all configuration settings I have to do so that
all the future requests to this application run under the security context of the Logged in user account not through the some default user set in IIS.

We need to have this working because all the permissions on the database are based on the logged in user.

We are using form authentication for LDAP authentication. And having impersonation = true in web.config.

Security :: Membership And Form Authentication / Logged In user Can See Content Of Pages They're not Suppose To?

Oct 19, 2010

I am having an issue, with the membership and form authentication. I am having a problem where when an logged in user types a url they can see the content of pages they're not suppose to. When the user tries to click on the screen or any ajax fires they are redirected to the main page. What is going on? I have all the items setup in the webconfig properly just wondering what is happening. Also I don't want to use a redirect solution for each page since that is what I thought webconfig was setup for.

Configuration :: Running Com / Application In Background Without User Logged In?

Aug 3, 2010

I have a web application that initializes a third-party com application to perform few calculations. The website is deployed on a windows 2008 server (standard edition).

The problem I have been facing is that when I am logged in to the server (Remote Desktop Connection only as the server is not local), the com application initializes fine. But when I log-off or just close the remote desktop connection, the application doesn't get initialized. I have searched for a solution and found this:
[URL]

I created the scheduled task as I didn't know how to create the windows service (the description at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/251192 is too confusing), and got the application to run when windows starts before even the user logs-in. But in even in this case, the application doesn't work unless the user is logged in and when I log-in, a second instance is created (with exactly the same user (admin)) and the original instance is never used.

I cannot get the application to run without logging off or atleast having to close the remote desktop connection. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Security :: Create User Account For Web Authentication From Non-web/local Application?

Sep 12, 2010

I have an application which is installed on local pc and is using SQL db. It is a client management system where I want to add capability to register new clients and give them access to my web site which is sharing the same SQL database with local application.

At the moment clients can register on the web site and I have ASP.NET authorisation system set up with aspnetdb_user, aspnetdb_membership and etc tables. But sometimes it happens that I need to register clients on my local application on PC and ideally would like that registration to create online account for the client as well. Then I want to be able to send him user id and password by email and let him know that he has been registered in my database and online account is ready for him as well.

Basically I want to have full synchronization between asp.net membership service and local application through SQL db. As I said both online and local apps are shareing the same SQL database. what would be the best practice to implement it.

Security :: LDAP The Authentication Mechanism Is Unknown?

Mar 4, 2010

I am working on Web application which get the authentication details from the Active direcoty using LDAP

when I am using the function DirectorySearcher.FindOne() it gives this error message (The authentication mechanism is unknown), and I relized that I should put this line in the web.config file ( <identity impersonate="false"/> ), then this problem will be solved.

but at the same time I should put true value to the same attribute to get the correct result when I am calling this function

System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name

otherwise the returened value will be (NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE) not the authenticated user name.

Security :: Access Denied For Logged User (anonymous User Is Fine)

Jan 7, 2011

I deployed a website where a logged user or an anonymous user can select data and download a XML file. The website generate the XML file in the server and then deliver it.

It works fine in my development environment, but after deployment, the anonymous user can download the file, but the logged user receive this error:

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'd:HostsLocalUserheringerwebsiteUpload20110107094051.xml' is denied.

It is weird that as anonymous i can do it.

The website server help states this:

"Grant write, modify, delete access rights on website's folder

Your website executes under unique user account that by default has full control over the website's folder.
So your application can create, open, read, write and delete files and folders inside of your root folder.

There is no need and no way to change this permissions.

If, when running ASP.Net application, you still unable to create file or update it, you have to check your Web.Config file for "<Identity impersonate..." tag and remove it.

The only exception is when the application tries to modify a file or folder in "Application_Start" event of Global.asax file. This is by design that user authenticated only after the Application_Start even. Before the user is authenticated your website runs under an identity of Application Pool which is "Network services". That account doesn't have access to the folder of your website.

To make it work you eather have to move the code that tries to modify files or folders out of the "Application_Start" event of the Global.asax file or inside the event you'll need to impersonate your user by code."

But i am not using impersonate and the tag is not in my web.config.

Security :: User Being Logged Out Straight Away?

Jun 9, 2010

I have been creating a website using the SQLMembershipProvider. I have been using an administration account to create the back-end system for generating the users fine for about 2 weeks. I now have more users created and I can log in fine. However, when I log in as the newly created users, they can get to the page they are after, but if they refresh the page or redirect to another page, they get redirected to the login page. I have checked permissions, iis recycler, session state and security setting in my web.config (posted below) but nothing has fixed it. It cannot be IIS because it does it on my development machine as well as on the actual webserver and it works fine for the admin user.

Security :: How Does Each Page Get The User That Is Logged In

May 21, 2010

I've successfully made a custom membership provider that connects, queries, and updates my custom Oracle database. I found a good sample on MSDN. I also found documentatio on the provider itself. However, I cannot find anywhere example calls you have to make for the different actions within the web pages themselves. Where can I find that?

For example

How do I check if a user is already logged in? What do I do when a user hits the login button? How does each page get the user that is logged in? etc.I am not using the asp login control. I have custom form, custom data, and custom graphics.

Security :: Assuming Identity Of Other Logged In Users In Web Application

Nov 1, 2010

I have a web application with a login form. A user enters a user name and password. If they exist in the database the user is authenticated using these two lines:
[Code]....

The problem is that when a user logs in at first he is logged in as himself. When navigating on the web application for a while the user assumes the identity of another logged in user. This happens all the time. In my web.config the authentication mode looks like this:
[Code]....

The site does not use ASP.NET session variables. Instead each page initializes a Singleton class, which stores itself in a static class variable, always accessing the users data already read from the database. The Singleton implementation is:
[Code]....

Could the problem with assuming another logged in users "session" be related to static classes in my application or a Forms Authentication configuration or a configuration in IIS (e.g. is it possible for users to have their own process?).

Security :: Creating New User Changes Logged In Credentials

Nov 23, 2010

In my application, I have users request accounts, and then an admin goes in to approve or reject the account. When the admin approves the account, the create user wizard is used. After the user is created, I set the new user's role, and update a few other items in my database for user tracking, and send out an email to notify the new user of their account status. Here's the kicker: Once this new user is created, the admin, is now logged in as the new user. How is this happening? And how do I stop it? Here is my CreatedUser code, scrubbed of non-pertinent code.
