VS 2010 N-tier Approach - Saving SQL Connection

Sep 29, 2010

What is the most correct way to save your connection string when using the n-tier approach ? Right now I have two windows app and one web app using my DLL library, what I'm currently doing is to create a static
method inside my dal "GLOBALDAL"
inside I'm making this check:

Code:
if (System.Web.HttpContext.Current != null) ...
if httpContext.Current is null
That's mean that one of my windows applications doing the request, if so I get the CN from a file otherwise it's mean its the website knocking on my door so I get the CN from:
Code: System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Application["ConnectionString"]
I am thinking of changing it all and just set properly in my DA layer that expose the CN as a string. But I fear of security issues. So what is the correct way?

Best Approach For Deploying An .Net Website To A Web Form?

Feb 10, 2011

We need to deploy our asp.net web site in web farm which consists of 16 web servers. Whenever we need to roll out a new release it is very time consuming and tedious as we need to deploy it first on the DR environment (16 web servers) and then on to Live environment (16 web servers). Currently we prepare the msi on our build server and copy it on all the front end web servers which involves first FTPing the msi to a common location on hosting network and then copying from the common location to each server.
After thet we backup the existing website and then run the installer one by one on each machine

Resizing Images With .NET And Saving To Database?

Mar 18, 2010

I need to take an uploaded image, resize it, and save it to the database. Simple enough, except I don't have access to save any temp files to the server. I'm taking the image, resizing it as a Bitmap, and need to save it to a database field as the original image type (JPG for example). How can I get the FileBytes() like this, so I can save it to the database?Before I was using ImageUpload.FileBytes() but now that I'm resizing I'm dealing with Images and Bitmaps instead of FileUploads and can't seem find anything that will give me the bytes.

Oct 13, 2010

I have modified a part of code of an existing web application. Once it worked fine on my local machine, I moved it to the common server. But, when different users hit the common server, the web application is behaving differently. I tried stopping and starting the website on the common server and it worked fine for sometime around a day and again it started working differently for different users. Then I tried to restart the IIS on the common server and it worked fine for once and again bounced back.Can anyone please suggest the areas where I can check to resolve the issue.

DataSource Controls :: Saving And Retrieving Images From Sql Server 2005

Jan 5, 2010

I am facing a problem with retrieving an image and showing it on asp.net grid. I migrated MS Access database to sql server. Image are visible in Crystal report when fetched from the same database (migrated sql server database). But same images are not visible in ASP.Net grid view or simple asp.net image control. Following is my code

SqlConnection oConn =
new
SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["csr"].ToString());
oConn.Open();
SqlCommand oraCmd = oConn.CreateCommand();
oraCmd.CommandText = "select top 1 photo from [test] where photo is not null";
SqlDataReader dr =
null;
dr = oraCmd .ExecuteReader ();
if(dr.Read ())
if (dr["photo"] !=
null)
{
Response.ContentType = "image/gif";
Response.BinaryWrite((byte[])dr["photo"]);
}

This function is getting called from another page . "hlopen" is hyper link in the grid. hlopen.NavigateUrl = "GetPhoto.aspx?id=1";

Editing Aspx Website Template With C#?

Jul 2, 2010

I have a template for a website, and I want to edit the aspx files with C#, thats means that I want each of the aspx files have a code behind file, which is .aspx.cs file for each .aspx exist file.

I opened a new ASP.NET AJAX Website Template and copied the .aspx files, the webconfig and the css to the new website I created.

when I add control and double-click on it in order to create a .aspx.cs file for this page,
it brings me to the source code.

I've added this line as the first line of my aspx file in order to create a .aspx.cs file:

<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true"
CodeFile="Login.aspx.cs" Inherits="Login" %>

but still it dont let me create an aspx.cs file.

AJAX :: The Requested Script Resource 'Common.Common.js' Requires Version 'ControlToolkit, Version=4?

Aug 11, 2010

I have a solution I'm working on in VS2010 Professional, using ASP.NET 4.0 with the AJAX Toolkit.This has been working fine, but when I started it up today, I got the runtime exception shown above. This exception occurs on any page with a control from the toolkit.Sometimes when I load a page, I get an exception "Could not load file or assembly 'System.Windows, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, ublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." If I then reload the page (without making any changes), I then get the exception shown in the subject line.I tried dragging an AJAX Toolkit control from the toolbox onto a page, and then deleting it, and that worked - once. The next time I tried the page (or any other), I got the exception again. Dragging a control out didn't help this time.

Avoid Loading A LINQ To SQL Object Twice When Editing It On A Website

Apr 9, 2010

I know you are all tired of this Linq-to-Sql questions, but I'm barely starting to use it (never used an ORM before) and I've already find some "ugly" things. I'm pretty used to ASP.NET Webforms old school developing, but I want to leave that behind and learn the new stuff (I've just started to read a ASP.NET MVC book and a .NET 3.5/4.0 one). So here's is one thing I didn't like and I couldn't find a good alternative to it.

In most examples of editing a LINQ object I've seen the object is loaded (hitting the db) at first to fill the current values on the form page. Then, the user modify some fields and when the "Save" button is clicked, the object is loaded for second time and then updated. Here's a simplified example of ScottGu NerdDinner site.

//
// GET: /Dinners/Edit/5
[Authorize]
public ActionResult Edit(int id) {
Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id);
return View(new DinnerFormViewModel(dinner));
}
//
// POST: /Dinners/Edit/5
[AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post), Authorize]
public ActionResult Edit(int id, FormCollection collection) {
Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id);
UpdateModel(dinner);
dinnerRepository.Save();
return RedirectToAction("Details", new { id=dinner.DinnerID });
}

As you can see the dinner object is loaded two times for every modification. Unless I'm missing something about LINQ to SQL caching the last queried objects or something like that I don't like getting it twice when it should be retrieved only one time, modified and then comitted back to the database. So again, am I really missing something? Or is it really hitting the database twice (in the example above it won't harm, but there could be cases that getting an object or set of objects could be heavy stuff).

C# - Saving Files In The Root Website Directory In Apache

Jul 16, 2010

I have an ASP.NET application running on Apache server with mod_mono. If I have a folder called "temp" located in the website's root directory and run the following code

System.IO.TextWriter tw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("temp/test.txt");
tw.WriteLine(DateTime.Now);
tw.Close();

it saves test.txt in C:Program FilesMono-2.6.4in emp on the server. If I add a slash to the directory name like this: System.IO.TextWriter tw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("/temp/test.txt"); It saves it to C:/temp. Both do not do what I want. How do I get the code to save the file to the temp folder inside my website's root directory? Is this a mod_mono issue or something to do with Apache? I have tried adding this line to httpd.conf Alias /temp "C:/Path_to_root_folder/temp" without any luck. I shouldn't have to use alias if the temp folder is within the root directory, correct? In my development environment which uses XSP as the web server everything works as expected. It is only a problem when running on Apache.

Unauthenticated Users Can't See Images In Website?

Nov 7, 2010

When I run my website through debug mode in visual studio everything looks great and all the images on the page show up fine. But once I deploy my website to an IIS7 web server (doubt that other versions would make any difference, but you never know) then users can't see the images on the site until they log in.The website is an asp.net MVC site and I'm new to MVC, though I do have lots of experience with asp.net forms. It seems that only authenticated users are allowed to access the images folder, and there is an authorization section in my web.config saying that only admins can access the site, so how do I make it so that all users, authenticated or otherwise can view the images?

Web Forms :: Showing Images Located Outside The Website?

Dec 22, 2010

I am developing a web app which uses images. Because there are lots of images, I decided to store them in a location out of the web site, maybe they can reside in a different unit (g:Pictures for example, where g: is a drive that belongs to a disk array which is part of the web site infraestructure).

At the beginning, such pictures were saved in a folder within the web site project so it was easy to show them using the asp:image control's ImageURL property but now that they are outside, things get complicated.
