Control's OnInit Called Even When Attaching It During Parent's OnPreRender?

Mar 11, 2010

My original understanding was that the asp.net page lifecycle is run once for all pages and controls under normal circumstances. When I attached a control during a container's OnPreRender, I encountered a situation where the control's OnInit was not called. OK, I considered that a bug in my code and fixed as such, by attaching the control earlier.

But just today, I encountered a situation where OnInit for a control seems to be called after the normal OnInit has been done for everyone else. See stack below. It seems that during the page's PreRender, the control's OnInit is called as it is being dynamically added.

So I just want to confirm exactly what ASP.NET's behavior is? Does it actually keep track of the stage of each control's lifecycle, and upon adding a new control, it will run from the very beginning?

WCF / ASMX :: GetUser() Is Null When WCf In Virtual Directory Is Called In Parent Directory

Nov 10, 2010

I have a WCF service in a virtual directory that is called in the code behind of a page that is in the parent directory, when i debug the code i can see the wcf service is being called, however when the service calls Membership.GetUser() it alway returns null. The user has already logged in to the asp.net site. When i call the service via jquery it does pick up the correct user, but i need to be able to call it via the code behind as well. I am developing in .Net 3.5 how i can make the Wcf pick up the logged in user?

.net - Invalid Viewstate Error - OnPreRender?

Jan 19, 2010

I'm getting 100+ errors per day on my website with System.Web.HttpException: Invalid viewstate. The website is asp.net 3.5 running on iis6 , not running in a web-garden/web-farm , single server.Here are a few sample errors.

Machine: ML Framework Version: 2.0.50727.3603 Assembly Version: 6.5.3664.33889
Source: http://www.domain.com/WebResource.axd?d=z5VmXXoSLLpQHoPictureAlert
Exception: System.Web.HttpException: Invalid viewstate. at System.Web.UI.Page.DecryptStringWithIV(String s, IVType ivType) at

i already tried wraping all inline javascript with //<![CDATA[ //]]>

i already set enableViewStateMac to false.From looking at all the errors guessing out of the "d" paramter it seems to focus on a single usercontrol on my website.in this control i change the visiblity of div's + text in the usercontrol OnPreRender function.

protected override void OnPreRender(EventArgs e)
{
base.OnPreRender(e);
PreparePage();
}
Can the errors be related to the usercontrol behavioral?

Web Forms :: Passing A Button's Click Event To A OnPreRender Method?

Mar 2, 2010

I'm attempting to use a Button's OnCommand method to handle it's click event so that the event is passed on to OnPreRender method as shown below. So basically the OnPreRender method is called upon a button click. I'm need to use the OnCommand method because I have 2 buttons.

//mark up
<asp:DataPager ID="GroupSearchResultPager" runat="server" OnPreRender="groupSearch_PreRender" >
<asp:Button ID="btnSearchUser" runat="server" Text="Search" OnClick="btnSearchUser_Click" CommandName="searchUser" />
//code behind
protected void btnSearchGroup_Click(object sender, CommandEventArgs e)
{
groupSearch_PreRender(this, e); //call groupSearch_PreRender
}
protected void groupSearchView_PreRender(object sender, CommandEventArgs e)
{
if(e.CommandName=="searchUser")
{
do stuff
}
}

However, this results in the following exception:

CS0123: No overload for 'groupSearch_PreRender' matches delegate 'System.EventHandler' So basically groupSearch_PreRender only takes an EventArg. I've tried casting as shown below but it doesn't seem to work. How else can I pass the button click event to the PreRender method?

protected void groupSearchView_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
CommandEventArg entry = (CommandEventArg)e; //casting to CommandEventArg
if(entry.CommandName=="searchUser")
{
do stuff
}
}

AJAX :: Web User Control Loaded Into PlaceHolder Control Causing Full Postback On Parent Page?

Jun 1, 2010

In my default.aspx page I have a PlaceHolder control within an UpdatePanel. In this placeholder control I will dynamically load a web user control, which is just a form with a submit button. On this user control, I have the form within an update panel and I have the "Submit" button's Click Event added to the triggers.

When I submit the form, the UpdatePanel on the web user control nor the update panel on the default.aspx page are capturing the post back, thus causing a full post back which refreshes my page.

how to capture this post so its rendered in Ajax and not a full post back?

C# - Cannot Get Values In OnInit Event

Sep 30, 2010

I understand the order the events occur with page life cycle but it is not helping with my situation. I have a checkboxlist that is populated by a directory filled with forms. When I check a box next to the name of the form I would like it to dynamically create a wizard step and insert the form.

Order of events:
OnInit:
GatherForms() - Checks directory and loads all form names into checkbox
LoadForms() - Checks "Selected" Session and loads forms that were collected
CheckBoxList:SelectedIndexChanged #AutoPost = true#
PopulateForms() - Loops through the checkboxs and adds them to session state

When the user clicks the checkbox it does a postback and hits the OnInit which pulls from the session. The problem is that PopulateForms() was not ran yet so it populated nothing even though it is checked. If I click another item it will postback and appear. I cannot seem to be able to pull any kind of useful information from the checkbox before the refresh which means I cannot see the forms appear immediately. I have also tried looping the checkbox but unfortunately viewstate hasnt posted yet. sigh.

P.S: I cannot use Request.Form[] because I have to get all the selected items out of the checkbox. maybe i can but i cannot find a way :/

Dynamic Adding Controls During OnLoad Or OnInit?

I wonder where I could write the code: inside OnLoad or OnInit method? and why? If I place it inside OnLoad, should I add following line: if (IsPostBack) return; before any initialization code?
