How To Create Only App_Code.dll For A Website
Mar 10, 2010
I have an existing website, I want to create unit tetsing for each class in App_Code of my website. I have used Visual Studio create unit testing wizard. It auto create wwwroot_accessor for me so that I can access the class. However, When I try to pass interface object, I got error like value of type "fakeClient_accessor" cannot be converted to
'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.PrivateObject ".
So I am think maybe I make an assembly of the App_Code.dll, add it as reference to my unit tetsing page, so I directly access the class instead of using accessor. Is my thinking correct to do unit testing? How do I create the App_Code.dll by using build?

I am using visual studio 2008 professional. I created a unit test project for my current website (project). This unit testing project is mainly testing code in App-Code folder. In order to be able to access classes from App_Class I need to add App_Code.dll reference to my unit testing project. Right now, I am doing like: publish website, which produce App_Code.dll. Then I added it to my unit testing project. This is very time consuming process: if I make any changes on under test class, I need to publish website to get App_Code.dll. It takes at lest 4 minutes to publish and get App-code.dll. If I have add the new App-code to my unit testing project, it takes about 1 to 2 minites. Is there an easier way toget App_Code.dll?
I have tried use Accessor that MS Test autogenerated, which deos not need App_Code.dll, however, I cannot get an object instantiated. So that is why I add App_Code.dll to my test project.

While the economy has been in the shitter, I've written possibly the most coolest site EVER for unemployed developers looking to buzzword-ify their resumes. (Don't hate the player, hate the game.)
The only problem is, it needs a scheduled task to run once a day to do some data mining. I spent many, many hours a few months ago researching solutions, but nothing seemed sure-fire.
If I have shared hosting and cannot remote in (e.g. mstsc and create a Schedule Task), how can I create a task that will run once a day on the backend of an ASP.NET website?
After all the research I did, I don't think it's possible. Per my last analysis, someone has to visit the site at least once a day to instantiate an instance of HttpApplication.
Does anyone have any solution to making sure an operation runs automatically, no matter whether anyone visits the site, and without anything but FTP access to the website?
Like I said, I've done A LOT of looking into this in the past, and it didn't seem possible. IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE implementing a solution, contribute your advice! But not postulating or conjecturing needed--it's far more nuanced and difficult than you're surely imagining.

Is there a way to generate offline version of the whole Website?
All my pages are in ASPX and uploaded onto the server. When I run a demo of my site, sometimes there are no Internet availability. So it would be great to actually have the site offline but not running Visual Studio in order to show the site.

i am creating a website in 4 languages. all the labels and buttons should chage as per the users choice. the language details should not be hard coded and it has to come from the databse for each language. Instead of doing it manually(depends upon the language selection fetch the data from the databse and show the labels etc) do we have any inbuild Techno ledge to achieve this in a faster way.

I'm accustomed to writing desktop applications in C#.NET. Where I have a nice little solution folder which is also under version control. So at any time, on any computer I can check out whatever version of my software I want run the compiler and have a working copy of my program.
Now I'm looking into developing websites, where the files and data are a lot more dispersed. I'm using ASP.NET, but really my question is more general and could apply to any website framework.
I'm trying to understand the proper work-flow between developing my website, a version control server, and the actual live website that users will see. Obviously this can vary a lot depending on the type and scale of the website, but I'm only considering a pretty simple site. I'm just getting started with this stuff.
All the source files for the site would be stored on a subversion server, which I would check out onto my local computer. My local computer would have a local database which I would use for development of the site. Next I would publish to a test version on my hosted server, which would point to a separate test database. This test database may periodically be replaced by a copy of the live database.
If all goes well I would then publish to a beta version of the site which points to the live data. Users could then check out the beta version to provide feedback. Finally if there are still no problems the source files for the live site would be updated.
Does this make sense? Does anyone have any comments on how this could be improved? Are there any good books or online tutorials available on developing these kind of workflows?
Also the one thing that I'm really not sure about is how to manage changes to the actual schema of the database. I figure with each version I could generate a SQL script that can be use to update the Test and Live databases on the host. However, I'd also like to be able to easily setup a new database for any version of my site with out having to run every update SQL script for every version up to the desired version. Is the best solution to use an ORM like NHibernate or Subsonic so I could always generate my database schema directly from my code?
