Iis7 - Serving Static Content From A Subdomain Using URL Rewrite

Feb 24, 2011

I have a domain which is receiving quite a few hits per day and have been asked if I can serve the static content from a subdomain. As the site is quite extensive and already written, I was wondering if there is any way I can use URL rewriting to change:

www.example.com/image.gif
to
static.example.com/image.gif

I have a solution which works using 301 redirects but from what I understand, this is counter productive as 2 requests will have to be made per image. I don't really want to go through all the aspx pages and css to hard code the new url as it will cause problems further down the line - some parts of the site are still being developed and static content could change at any time. I tried using rewrite (as opposed to redirect) to change the url but it came out something like:

http://www.example.com/http://static.example.com/image.gif

How would you achieve this? I have full access to dns and the server (win 2008r2 / IIS 7.5) so can make any changes if url rewriting is not the answer.

Serving Up Multiple Content Items?

Feb 4, 2010

got a Asset Management tool which stores (in a folder("node")) an index.htm and a bunch of other asset files such as .js, .css, flv, etcHere's the problem...if I access the index.htm I get ti via it's nodeID http://site/NODEGUID/index.htm , and all compound files try and download via that GUID as well so essientially I just get index.htm content served into each request file, thus giving me an epic fail :)Is there some way in asp.net to intercept that request so I can do a lookup on the DAM and get the proper file reference and send that down instead?

URL Rewrite Outbound Rules IIS7?

Sep 15, 2010

Experimenting with URL rewrites using this module, however I'm getting the following error when attempting to hit the URL. Looked online for answers, but not sure what the best way to get around this is...

HTTP Error 500.52 - URL Rewrite Module Error. Outbound rewrite rules cannot be applied when the content of
the HTTP response is encoded ("gzip"). IIS received the request; however, an internal error occurred during the processing of the request. The root cause of this error depends on which module handles the request and what was happening in the worker process when this error occurred. IIS was not able to access the web.config file for the Web site or application. This can occur if the NTFS permissions are set incorrectly. IIS was not able to process configuration for the Web site or application. The authenticated user does not have permission to use this DLL. The request is mapped to a managed handler but the .NET Extensibility Feature is not installed.

Content Type When Serving A File In A Generic Handler?

Dec 10, 2010

I'm busy writing a handler to serve various documents for download or presentation in web forms pages. The documents range from various image formats, to PDF, to MS Office documents, to generic binaries. My basic draft of the download process is as below:

[code]....

However, I have some misgivings about lumping all documents together as application/octet-stream, and I would prefer, if feasible, to use a more specific content type per document type. I have a DB table for document types where I could store this. Am I going in the right direction, and if so, where can I find a suitable starting list of content types for document types?

IIS7 Rewrite - Strip HTTP Header?

Apr 1, 2010

Is it at all possible to use IIS7's rewrite capability in web.config to strip a particular HTTP header from a client request?We have an application that makes an HTTP POST to our website, and apparently the request contains the HTTP Expect header. Previously this was not a problem, but we've switched hosts and now the site is returning HTTP error 417 Expectation failed. So the real solution is to fix the software so it doesn't send the Expect header, but that can't happen soon enough for the folks in charge, who'd like to come up with an immediate web-based fix.I've used ISAPI_Rewrite before and I've read that it can strip a header, and the new host claimed they had ISAPI installed... but that seems to have been a lie, as I cannot get it to work, and support's only response on the subject is "use IIS7 Rewrite instead."

Iis7 Url Rewrite - Optional Querystring Parameters?

Mar 9, 2010

I'm using the iis7 URL Rewrite module and it's working fine, except for two things. Being new to this, I might be missing something obvious.

1) My URL gets converted from www.mysite.com/search.aspx?fName=John&sName=Smith to www.mysite.com/John/Smith. This works fine, but if I add a trailing / , a few images on the site disappear, wheras a few don't. (They're all in the same location). However, the search results are fine.

2) Is it possible to make cerain querystrings optional? Server side, this is implemented (i.e. if nothing is entered, then assume a default value). But how would this work with the URL rewrite module? e.g. www.mysite.com/John would search for John and use a default value for the sName parameter.

IIS7 Rewrite Changing Default Button?

Apr 23, 2010

I've run into a strange problem regarding default buttons in master pages and IIS7 rewrite module. All my content pages have default buttons set in the code-behind (on prerender), or they are in panels on the aspx page. This works fine on my local machine and on the production server. However, when I enable IIS7 URL Rewrite, the default button is always to the one in the master page.

protected void LoginButton_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Button btnDefault = sender as Button;
this.Page.Form.DefaultButton = btnDefault.UniqueID;
}

That's how I set my default button in the code-behind. I'm not sure what the rewrite module could be doing.

Configuration :: Default Page Not Working On IIS7 With URL Rewrite Http Module

Jan 18, 2010

I have the following setting in my web.config to redirect to a default page:

<defaultDocument>
<files>
<clear/>
<add value="default.aspx"/>
</files>
</defaultDocument>

For example when a user enters www.homeforhire.com they should be redirected to default.aspx (for operational reasons the user is then redirected to
www.homeforhire.com/home.aspx).

Instead an error is caught in the Rewrite module (which should not be activated). I am using an http module to perform URL rewriting.

It appears as if the default document setup is not working correctly, and the requested page ~/ is being sent to the Rewrite module, causing an error (which is then caught by my error handler and the user is redirected to the home page).

Entering www.homeforhire.com/default.aspx works correctly.

Can anyone tell me why the default document settings in the web.config do not appear to be working?

Forcing Https And Avoid Duplicate Urls Using IIS7 Url Rewrite Module

Feb 16, 2011

I need to force every request to https://www.mysite.com (always with https and www)

The site is hosted in GoDaddy and I need to do it via IIS7 URL Rewrite Module.

I've been able to do the HTTPS redirect with the following code:

<system.webServer>
<rewrite>
<rules>
<rule name="Canonical Host Name" stopProcessing="true">
<match url="(.*)" />
<conditions>
<add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^mysite.com$" />
</conditions>
<action type="Redirect" url="https://www.mysite.com/{R:1}" redirectType="Permanent" />
</rule>
</rules>
</rewrite>
</system.webServer>

Test cases

http://mysite.com -> https://www.mysite.com OK
http://www.mysite.com -> https://www.mysite.com NOT WORKING

I guess the condition is not being satisfied when I enter www.mysite.com in the browser, so there's no redirect and the page serves as HTTP instead of HTTPS.

I think I just need to modify the condition pattern, but I have almost nothing regex knowledge and I need this asap.

C# - Serving An Exe To Firefox From An Aspx. Firefox Downloads It As "Content". Incorrect Filename And No Extension?

Mar 28, 2011

I'm trying to server an exe to Firefox from an aspx page. The aspx page handles the headers and the page is launched by our Flex GUI. Flex correctly launches the link for all browsers (including Firefox) so I'm certain that's not the issue.

The problem I'm having is when I try to download the file from within Firefox, FF downloads the file fine but it names it "Content". It has no extension and the file name is incorrect. All the other browsers download it with the file name I specified in the aspx page and they all have the .exe extension. I should note that if I rename the "Content" file to "Content.exe" it runs correctly.Below is the code I'm using in my aspx page -

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) {
string fileName = Request.QueryString["file"];
System.IO.FileInfo fileInfo = new System.IO.FileInfo(Server.MapPath(fileName));

MVC :: Static Content Returns A 500 Error?

Nov 16, 2010

I think I might be missing something obvious but I'm not sure. The other day I was trying to run throught the windows live ID domain verification process on my asp.net mvc site. Part of the process requires you to download a text file and put it in the root of your site which your domain points to. When I would click the verify button in the windows live app verification process it would fail. In a browser, I could hit the request the text file and get a 200, which puzzle me. I then used this site http://www.internetofficer.com/seo-tool/redirect-check/ to check for any redirection issues. Suprisingly when I enter in the url to check, in my case http://www.whatitcoststobeme.com/741KXPjf42zgZRnV6O1LsO92.txt, it returns a 500 error. I ran this same test against a non-MVC site and the verificaton process passed plus the redirection checker return a 200 ("direct link" on their site). The environment this was tested in was IIS7.

why this is happening with static content on a ASP.NET MVC site? I want to say it's something to do with the url routing handlers.

MVC :: Put View-specific Static Content (img/js)?

May 26, 2010

so I see these opinions/tutorials about serving static content to support views, from files that co-reside in directories with those views:http://forums.asp.net/p/1258895/2347379.aspx#2347379http://haacked.com/archive/2008/06/25/aspnetmvc-block-view-access.aspxIn the second article, Phil says view-adjacent static content was default-enabled at the time (over a year ago). Unfortunately, though, I reference:

[Code]....

and by default ASP.NET is trying to find it adjacent to my view, which (voila!) is disabled by default. Grr. :)What is the out-of-box IDE-assisted way to reference view-specific static content that doesn't require hardcoding directory tree structures into my path, and also doesn't require ALL of my assets to be in a single folder?Or, if I do it the "unpure" way like I'll probably do if I don't get other ideas (by modifying /Views/Web.Config HttpFileNotFoundHandler), should I block anything unsafe besides .ASCX, .ASPX, and .MASTER that is likely to show up in my views folder?

Redirect Subdomain To Subfolder Of Another Subdomain?

Nov 15, 2010

What I want to do is take traffic that is going to shop.mywebsite.com and redirect or rewrite (I'm not sure of the terminology) the domain to be www.mywebsite.com/shop. Both shop.* and www.* are separate web applications (nopCommerce and Umbraco respectively) that don't seem to cooperate when I've tried to nest them. Both applications are in a Server 2008 R2/IIS 7.5 environment.

I've searched around stackoverflow and what I've found is a lot of answers to mapping the other direction (ie subfolder to a subdomain) but that's not what I'm looking for as far as I understand the problem.

The end goal is to combine the SEO reputation of the shop subdomain into the www subdomain. I readily admit that I might have this all backwards and am willing to try any suggestions I'm offered.

Subdomain Cookie (parent And One Subdomain)

Jan 31, 2010

I have an app with multiple subdomains, subone.parent.com, subtwo.parent.com.

I have a logon page at parent.com/login. When a user logs in I redirect them to the proper domain based on which one they are a member of. This works fine.

FormsAuthenticationTicket ticket = new FormsAuth...
string encTicket = FormsAuthentication.Encrypt(ticket);
var cookie = new HttpCookie(FormsAuthentication.FormsCookieName, encTicket);
cookie.Domain = subone.parent.com
Repsonse.Cookies.Add(cookie)

This properly authenticates the user for subone.parent.com and not subtwo.parent.com. However I would like to do the following.

If the user goes back to parent.com, I would like to know that they are logged in and redirect them back to subone.parent.com.

Is there a best practice for accomplishing this? Or do I have to set another cookie for parent.com?

I'm working in asp.net mvc if it matters.

Avoiding Cookies While Requesting Static Content?

Serve static content from a cookieless domain (5)!

Here is my screen shot [URL] as well. I would like to know is it possible to avoid cookies for these kind of requests. I see that there is no cookie requests for javascript files as well. I it possible to avoid cookies in the header for these files as well? and why didn't the browser attach cookies for javascript files and attach for CSS and image?
