I have an SQL Server database.I am using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express to develop my application. What I seem to be lacking is the ability to create reports. Is there any report generation software that will work with 2008 Express?

Using SqlDataSource, when I try to configure a data source, I'm able to input a server name: (local)sqlexpress and the "Test Connection" button shows that it was successful. However, if I type in a new database table name and VWD 2008 asks if I would like to create it, I keep getting the message: "OBJECT REFERENCE NOT SET TO AN INSTANCE OF AN OBJECT." No idea what that means or how to fix it. I can't open theDatabase Explorer View.
View 2 RepliesI am having trouble using the "copy web" feature to copy a subweb I created in my development enviornment to my live web siteThe subweb does not currently exist on the live web site.When I launch the copy web application, I get an "open web site" dialog and I point it to my live site. It prompts me to "create new web site" but when I try I am prompted to authenticate but it will not accept my credentials.What is the proper procedure to create a new subweb on an existing website from Web Express 2008?

View 2 RepliesI just read the MSDN Magazines article on Dynamic Data and it got me wandering, could I use this in MVC3? Then with a little research the answer is yes, but you have to copy all these assemblies, modify the global.asax file etc. The same if one wanted to use web forms and MVC3. Wouldn't it just be easier to be able to choose a blend option when creating a new application in VS? My suggestion would be if one wanted to create a hybrid application that blended two different application styles, one could just choose multiple apps at the start, such as MVC3 and Dynamic data; and VS would just add or modify the necessary references so one could use the two development styles in a single application.
I realize that some would say this would probably defeat the purpose of the different styles, but if developers are gong to do it anyway, why not be supportive. What did Emerson say? "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds".
I been trying to attach a database in sql 2008 express created in VS 2008 Professional. I have been getting error message and codes which there is no support for once you click the link in the message whats up with that? to my most recent memory it had something to do with permissions... but I was logged in as adminstrator so that confuses me.

is there any difference between sql express and sql client. Actually I have been told to install a sql client using which i will connect to the sql server installed remotely. The goal, from internal department (user) perspective:A department wants to "upload" an excel spreadsheet of data (product, term, rate, etc) to SQL (this will be from the internal network). The data is then saved to a webpage location for that department to view and approve. Once "approved," this data is displayed on the live web servers (public-facing website which is two load balancing servers).
Bonus:
The .NET application/SQL Server can send an email to the department reminding them to upload the latest rates (each weekday morning, then each Thursday afternoon) if rates have not yet been "approved."
From the development perspective, this is my general idea, but I may be wrong.There are three spreadsheets, each with one tab. The first spreadsheet is uploaded, and the .NET application puts it in a SQL table. I then need to display this table of data on a .aspx page for the department to approve before the .aspx page is pushed to the live web servers.
First, I need an interface for this department to upload Excel files. I need this application to save the data to SQL and display it in a .aspx page so that the department can look it over and approve it. The department needs a way to "approve" the page, and this action will push the data to the live web servers. Will this involve SQL data transformation services?
After I installed Visual Studio 2008 Standard edition, then I upgrade "SQL Server Express 2005" to "SQL Server Express 2008 SP2". Process upgrading SQL Server Express 2008 was going succesfully (none of the process was fail).
But when I create a New Website I could not add a new item "SQL Server Database" into my website file. Because Visual Studio always rejected any new "SQL Server Database" by giving message below (underline):
This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported.
I started working on a website using 2010 Express. However, the hosting company that I am using hasn't fully implemented .NET 4.0. I'm wondering if there is a way that I can save my website for compatability with 2008 express. Then I can finish and publis using 2008 Express.

I created a gridview that is made up of 4 gridviews and using a stored procedure to populate it. I create columns at runtime because the number of columns changes all the time.To make the grids editable I am adding template fields at runtime as I create the columns, this is to ensure that a user is able to edit the cells and some foot values update. Reason why I have four grids is to freeze rows and columns like in excel using javascript. The problem is that performance is very bad especially in IE, the grids take a long time to load. I am not sure if this is caused by the data load or the creation of text boxes. see some of the code below for my _aspx page:

Iam working on a banking web application developed in asp.net 3.5 and MS SQL Server 2008.My problem is to create reports including some pre-formatted reports,summary reports and some detail reports.I want to know what is the best technique to create these reports.I don't want to use third party reporting tools as they have to be configured on the web server and some times they takes lot of time in generating reports due to their complex structure.Since its a web application having large recordsets so i need a consistent solution keeping in mind the performance and complex nature of the reports which might be demanded by the banks.Can anyone help me please in this regard?

I just ported the website to my local computer, and build the site using VS 2008, that comes with Crystal R. Basic.I haven't tested all the functionality of the site, so I'm not sure since all the pages that use C. Reports work ok.My main concern is about publishing the site I compiled to the server. Will things work, if I have Crystal R. Basic and the server has Crystal R. for .net 2.0.
