Mvc - Manage Urls / Links And Routing Centrally (c# + Js)?
Jan 19, 2011
I keep running into problems with URLs and routing. Couldn't find an answer on SO. I would like to manage all of my urls/links in a single place. This is for my C# MVC code and the js/jquery ajax code. These urls are scattered throughout my application. Moving to a production server needs some fixes and I don't like the fact that I need to look for all of the occurrences in the application. I don't mind fixing this once - but I would like to do it only once. how to manage all of these links/urls as a group

How would you accomplish these in ASP.NET Webforms 4.0 Routing;.aspx pages should not be accesible directly, pages should be accesible only with routes,
Start page should be "/" or "/home" or something else, but not "Default.aspx".

I'm using ASP.NET 4 and the routing engine. In my Global.asax I have something like this.
routes.MapPageRoute(
"Items",
"manager/items",
"~/Manager/Item/Items.aspx"
);
Is writing a link this this acceptable?: <a href="/Manager/Items"></a> Should I be using the <% %> tags and code within to retrieve the route name, "Items" in this case?

Using: .Net 4.0/C#/VS 2010 Express/ASP.NetImplemented the Routing as described here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc668202(VS.90).aspx.Here is my application: I have created a blog, the main page of which is called "default.aspx." Default.aspx contains a series of links to posts, each with a unique link. To get to an individual post, I utilize routing, using this URL format: tp://localhost:55074/WebSite3/2010/9/15/this-is-a-test-post~4. i parse the URL to get the year/month/date of the post, as well as the post title.This works fine.The problem occurs when I go to an individual post.All the links are broken.For example, I have a link at the top that takes you back to default.aspx (in the html, I have the link set up like this: <a href="default.aspx">Home</a>), except that now the link takes me here: http://localhost:55074/WebSite3/2010/9/15/default.aspx.Obviously, there are no 2010, 9, or 15 subdirectories, and default.aspx is in the root directory.Also, when I load an individual post, Request.Url.AbsolutePath returns this: /WebSite3/2010/9/15/this-is-a-test-post~4.

I'm building a website that stores a number of articles. The URL for each articles implements URL routing in the form /Articles/{categoryid}/{articleslug}.
Some articles have links to a graphics file. The link does not specify the full path so I'm storing the graphics file at /Articles/{categoryid}/{articleslug}/graphic.jpg.
This works fine on my desktop. But when I deployed the site to a shared hosting account, the behavior is different.
Now, the link only works if I store the graphics file at /Articles/{categoryid}/graphic.jpg. In other words, on my desktop, the {articleslug} is assumed to be a directory, but on the web it is assumed to be the name of the current page.
Does anyone know why the behavior changes? You can seen an example at http://www.blackbeltcoder.com/Articles/asp/creating-website-thumbnails-in-asp-net. Both the screenshot and download link near the top are broken links.

Here's an odd one.
I have a master page with links to other pages in the site. Those links use tilde paths (like "~/dir1/page2.aspx"). On most of the pages in the site that use this master page, there is no problem. The problem only seems to be on a few pages that use the master page, the links are VERY wrong, it tries to use the ~ as part of the link (so they are[URL]. It's as if it is treating the tilde as a literal under certain

I have some REST services using plain old IHttpHandlers. I'd like to generate cleaner URLs, so that I don't have the .ashx in the path. Is there a way to use ASP.NET routing to create routes that map to ashx handlers? I've seen these types of routes previously:
// Route to an aspx page
RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute("route-name",
"some/path/{arg}",
"~/Pages/SomePage.aspx");
// Route for a WCF service
RouteTable.Routes.Add(new ServiceRoute("Services/SomeService",
new WebServiceHostFactory(),
typeof(SomeService)));
Trying to use RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute() generates an error (that the handler does not derive from Page). System.Web.Routing.RouteBase only seems to have 2 derived classes: ServiceRoute for services, and DynamicDataRoute for MVC. I'm not sure what MapPageRoute() does (Reflector doesn't show the method body, it just shows "Performance critical to inline this type of method across NGen image boundaries"). I see that RouteBase is not sealed, and has a relatively simple interface:
public abstract RouteData GetRouteData(HttpContextBase httpContext);
public abstract VirtualPathData GetVirtualPath(RequestContext requestContext,
RouteValueDictionary values);
So perhaps I can make my own HttpHandlerRoute. I'll give that a shot, but if anyone knows of an existing or built-in way of mapping routes to IHttpHandlers, that would be great.

i have a function that pulls URLs from various web resources. needless to say some are full valid URLS and some are relative as per the HTML of the page. below is my asp.net/ c# logic i derived for examining the URL and then generate a full usable URL from whats pulled from the site...
NOTE:
origianlurl is the full url of the first searched page, and relativeUrl is a url found within the searched page (it can be a full www.site.com or a /contactus.html)

{
if (relativeUrl.StartsWith("http") || relativeUrl.StartsWith("www"))

I am using:
ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 with Web Forms Routing thru Global.asax (System.Web.Routing and RegisterRoutes)IIS 7
Everything is working fine in my local machine, but it gives the following error in my hosting environment:
Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Routing, Version=3.5.0.0, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
I did everything inside my web.config file mentioned in the following link:
[URL]
But I am still getting the above error.
What else am I supposed to do fix the error?

I have a Web application where i have added a reference to a RESTful WCF. I got the WCF url Routing to work in my webapplication by adding Inherits="RestService.Global" to the Web applications Global.asax.
<%@ Application Codebehind="Global.asax.cs" Inherits="RestService.Global" Language="C#" %>
But then i tried to create url Routing for the Web application and it does not work with the Inherits="RestService.Global" in the Global.asax. If i take it away it works fine. Is there a correct way to do this.

I'm trying to create my own CMS and I've gotten a little bit stuck at the stage of URL routing.
I want clean URLs without extensions and I'd like to be able to create and modify them in a web based interface without any messing around with IIS or actual files.
I've seen how to create a static route, but for that I need to go into my Global.asax file and manually add it.I would like to have all of these routes stored in a database so that I can easily modify them later.
Does anyone know how this can be achieved?
Just for extra information, I will be attempting to create a feature so that if a path exists, but is later changed, a 301 redirect is created to the new URL, is this also possible? (My first problem is the main issue, but thought I might ask this as well just in case it makes a difference)

How to handle asp.net mvc routing along with asp.net webform routing. I have merged my mvc app into my existing web application. In my web application i have implement routing as below:
routes.Add("View Product Details", new Route("Product/{City}/{Manufacturer}/{Name}/{ProductID}/{*ProductType}"));
Similarly i have implemented routing in mvc as below
routes.MapRoute("Product Details",
"Product/{City}/{Manufacturer}/{Name}/{ProductID}/{ProductType}",
new
{
controller = "Home",
action = "ProductDetails",
City= UrlParameter.Optional,
Manufacturer= UrlParameter.Optional,
Name= UrlParameter.Optional,
ProductID= UrlParameter.Optional,
ProductType= UrlParameter.Optional
});
How to handle both pages, as one is custom web form while other is asp.net mvc view?

Response.RedirectPermanent(Url); can redirect permanently to a url.
However, during my SEO process, I decided to change my routhing rule.
For example,
I change "/tag/{tag}-quotes" routing rule to "quoes-about/{tag}", but I don't want to lose all the traffic to old routing url.
What is the best way to handle this permanent redirection?

I want to rewrite something like this:
www.webaddress.com/article.aspx?date=150211&title=title-of-news-article
to this:
www.webaddress.com/150211/title-of-news-article
Even to achieve the first link above, I need to replace capital letters and non-standard characters like é with e, and replace spaces with hyphens. Is all of this possible using URL Rewrite Module 2.0 or might I be better off coding some ASP? I'm new to .net and may have to do something in classic if I struggle. And I only just get by in ASP...
I've tried some of the tutorials on the official IIS website and have got through a simple rewrite wizard, but replacing characters seems more complicated, and I'm sure some of the tutorials have errors in them...

I have a application which uses intelligencia urlrewriter to rewrite urls into seo friendly urls. Blog engine is integrated in this application under subfolder but shares webconfig with my application. Application runs perfectly on development server, but when i publish it to 2008/IIS7 server urls links don't work. Links similar to following work
<rewrite url="^/Abc" to="~/abc.aspx" processing="stop"/>
<rewrite url="^/Abc_123" to="~/abc-123.aspx" processing="stop"/>
But links like following fail to redirect and i get 404 errors
<rewrite url="^/Abc/(.*/)" to="~/abc.aspx?id=$1" processing="stop"/>
<rewrite url="^/XYZ" to="~/xyz.aspx?cat=school" processing="stop"/>
Anything which has query parameters in aspx url fails. I'm not sure what is causing this error on 2008/IIS 7 server and not on my VS 2008 development server.

I am using asp.net and when I type a bad url manually(in the browser) it gives me: The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. I want a bad url that doesn't exist to be re-directed to the home page. How do I do this?

I know the default routes in MVC include an id param which often maps to the identity of an entity as it's stored in the database. Now, often this is OK, but what about when you don't want someone to be able to manipulate it? Quite frankly, on many business apps this is very common. For example, you don't want someone to change the account number (not the best example, but you get the idea) in the URL for obvious reasons. So, you would need to validate the account number against the logged in user on every request. Obviously, that is not a realistic solution, and in webforms many people would store something like that in session. I am trying to rely on session very little in MVC, but aside from that would I just go old school and use hidden fields

My site was working fine before I starting working on incorporating URL redirection/rewriting. I have tried to preface all the URLs for graphic images and navigate URLs with a tilde and a slash ("~/"). However, now that I'm using rewriting on many of my pages, if the number of folders in the URL is 2 or less (such as MyDomain.com/Title/Author), it finds the graphics files without any problems, like before. When I view page source, I see that the HTML is calling for relative URLs that start with "../../", which is why it works for 2 or less folders in the URL. When there are 3 or more folders (such as MyDomain.com/Title/Author/Category), then it doesn't display the graphics files.
why I'm getting these relative URLs and so the files are not displaying correctly at times?
