Pass A String To A Web Service Using JQuery / JSON / AJAX?
Oct 29, 2010
As it is now I create a JavaScript object and then stringify it, put it in a hidden textbox and my code behind can read this string. I then use JSON.NET to parse the string which works fine. I now try to use ajax to post it to my web service but have some issues with how to send the string. I have tried many ways but gets the common errors like
Invalid JSON primitive: myString.
So I checked this out [URL] and it works with hard coded values but I want to use a variable.
JavaScsript to create the object:
for (var i = 0; i < results.rows.length; i++) {
var row = results.rows.item(i);
var customer = new Object();
customer.id = row['id']
customer.name = row['name']
var customerString = JSON.stringify(customer);
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "synchronise.asmx/synchroniseCustomers",
data: "synchroniseCustomers: " + customerString,
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType: "json",
error: function (xhr, status) {
alert("An error occurred: " + status);
},
success: function (msg) {
alert("success");
}
});
}
WebMethod:
public void synchroniseCustomers(string customerString)
{
JObject o = JObject.Parse(customerString);
string id = (string)o["id"];
string name = (string)o["name"];
If I use data: '{ FirstName: "Dave", LastName: "Ward" }'
in the example above it works but I wish to pass on a string instead.

Iīm using jQuery to make the ajax calls to web services. Iīm not using json, I want the information in XML. If I donīt pass parameters and I make the WS parameter less it works but if I want to pass a value as parameter (I tried int and string) it doesnīt work. Here is my code:
jQuery: [Code]....
The web service
[Code]....
The error that I get from firebug is an exception System.InvalidOperationException and it says that the parameter region_id is missing.It canīt be very difficult because it works without parameters but all the information I find in internet

I'm using ASP.NET and attempting to call a method with a signature of
[WebMethod]
public static string GetInfo(string id){...}
using the following javascript:
var elementValue = $("#element").attr('id');
[code]...
And this is not working.If instead I set elementValue = 2; it works fine. If I try to hardcode in a string value for testing purposes e.g. elementValue = "nameToLookUp"; It fails.Why is this happening, and how do I resolve it?On a side not, why is type: required to be POST instead of a GET? In the end I just want to pass a string value I want to look up in a DB and retrieving some json data.

how to pass this via Json.Tried doing something like
var data = { Item1: "test", Item2: 5 };
var JSONdata = $.toJSON(data);
However that did not work. Although simply changing wcf to expect an object with two properties such as Item1 and Item2 will work. Here is example I'm using... I'll trim it a bit to make it easier to read:
function Post(data, url)
{
$.ajax({
type: 'POST',[code].....

I've got code like this in a download page
Code:
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Partial Class _Download
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
[Code] .....
That is called like this:
Code:
function excelGrid(strId, blnDoReader) {
var wesPC = $("#" + strId);
var objWebParam = {};
var arrGrid = [];
[Code] ....
I am modifying this now - passing in the variable strWebParam which is the "stringified" version of a JSON array. And then in the function below I am trying to get the JSON-string into the POST. I tried the INPUT/TYPE=HIDDEN method you see below - but that did not work (cut off the string - it's got quotes in it)
Code:
$.downloadExcel = function(url, data, source, method, callback) {
var inputs = '';
var iframeX;
var downloadInterval;
if (url && data) {
[Code] ....
When I do a regular AJAX post for something I use the "data" element of the $.ajax method like this
Code:
var strWebParam = $.toJSON(objWebParam);
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "WebService.asmx/BootPage",
dataType: "json",
[Code] .....
How is that DATA: STRWEBPARAM getting passed back to IIS??

I need to perform asp.net web-service function call via jQuery and pass asp.net application path to it. That's the way I'm trying to do it (code is located within asp.net page, e.g. aspx file):
[code]...
Function call works well, but applicationPath parameter doesn't passed correctly. When I debug it I see that backslashes are removed, function gets "C:ProjectsSamplesmytestwebsite" instead of "'C:ProjectsSamplesmytestwebsite'".

I have an containing a list of divs that jQuery turns into progress bars. On .ready, I build a list of all of these progress bars and for each one, call a webservice that gets a value indicating how full the progress bar should be. In order to do this, I need to pass the ID of the div to the web service.
Because the divs are inside a ListView, I manually set the id to be id="completionbar_<%# Eval("MilestoneID") %>"
However, when I pass this id into my web service, it comes up as "undefined" every time. When I view the source, it looks like it's set correctly.
Here's the jQuery that calls my web service:
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$(".MilestoneCompletion").progressbar({ value: 0 });
$.each($(".MilestoneCompletion"), function(index, barDiv) {
[Code].....
I'm thinking maybe the script is executing before the DIV id is set by the ListView databind?

I am new to WCF, I was using web service asmx before. I have trouble on making my wcf JSON ajax service work through http like asmx.Could you help me see what wrong in my code?My WCF services are defined in my website application folder. My aim is to call this service in my aspx page java-script code and return complex object back as JSON to my javascript. I have no problem on doing this through classic asmx web service.
When I try to test it through my browser by type this in the URL , URL-http://localhost:3849/WebServices/Account/WCFCompanyService.svc/GetAll. it return "Method not allowed."
But if I type just this URL-http://localhost:3849/WebServices/Account/WCFCompanyService.svc, it return this:
WCFCompanyService Service
You have created a service.To test this service, you will need to create a client and use it to call the service. You can do this using the svcutil.exe tool from the command line with the following syntax:
svcutil.exe URL-http://localhost:3849/WebServices/Account/WCFCompanyService.svc?wsdl
This will generate a configuration file and a code file that contains the client class. Add the two files to your client application and use the generated client class to call the Service. For example:
C#
class Test { static void Main() { HelloClient client = new HelloClient();
[Code]....
This is my Ajax-enabled WCF service code:
[Code]....
This is the web.config service model setting
[Code]....

I have developed a wcf service for asp.net ajax client. It includes the following steps.
(1) Created WCF sevice contract with the operation "DoWork()" which will take string as input and retun string as output.
(2)Implemented the above operation contract(attributed the implementation class with aspnetcompatibility requirement as enabled).
(3)Added the webscriptenabled to endpoint in web.config file.
(4)Hosted the wcf servie.
(5)Downloaded the javascript file from the service.(e.g.,http://localhost/service1.svc/js)
Client
(1)Opend new asp.net webapplication.
(2)Added the downloaded .js file.
(3)Given the scripts path for ajaxscript manager as both .js file and service url.
e.g
<asp:ScriptManager
ID="id1"
runat="server">
<Scripts>
<asp:ScriptReference
Path="http://localhost:3443/Service1.svc/js/"
/>
<asp:ScriptReference
Path="~/js1.js"
/>
</Scripts>
</asp:ScriptManager>
(4)With this I am unable to call service method

I just hit the following issue: I am calling a web service that returns a serialized JSON object let's say: __type, FirstName, LastName (.net object Person with properties FirstName and LastName). __type's value is Test.Person
I have created a JS object using Type.registerNameSpace/registerClass called Demo.Person and it is registered on the page using the ScriptManager. Everything is working fine; I am able to get data from the server on the call back.
Is it possible to make the returned object from the web service be an instance of the declared JavaScript Demo.Person class? The idea would be to call a method like result.getFullName() on the client side without having to copy all the properties. This is just a simple scenario for more complex objects.

this is the web method I'm using to convert my DataTable into JSON string:
[Code]....
But I'm not sure this is as good and as fast as it should be. I am sending to client side a JSON string format, but I think maybe there is a better way of doing this. I know there is JSON.NET
but I didn't see there any converting for DataTables.

I am using JQuery & JSON (POST) to call webmethod. However I can call only webmethod located at aspx file but not in asmx file Below are sample codes
CustomValidate.asmx
Imports System.Web.Services
Imports System.Web.Services.Protocols
Imports System.ComponentModel
Public Class CustomValidate
Inherits System.Web.Services.WebService
'ACCESS VIA JSON
<System.Web.Services.WebMethod()> _
Public Shared Function AJAX_Test(ByVal date1) As Boolean...
Return True
End Function
End Class
Javascript: JQuery JSON
function isDates(source, arguments) {
var isValidDate;
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
url: "CustomValidate.asmx/AJAX_Test",
data: '{date1: "' + arguments.Value + '"}',
dataType: "json",
async: false,
success: function(result) {
isValidDate = result;
},
error: function(httpRequest, textStatus, errorThrown) {
alert("status=" + textStatus + ",error=" + errorThrown);
}
});
arguments.IsValid = isValidDate;
}
It always return javascript undefined error. But if I put the AJAX_Test webmethod in aspx page and replace the url: "CustomValidate.asmx/AJAX_Test" to "mypage.aspx/AJAX_Test". It works fine.

I am using .Net Framework 3.5 on an ASP.net web project using jquery.ajax to make web service calls. My web service returns objects serialized as JSON by specifying the content type of my POST as "application/json". I would like just one of my many properties to return a non quoted javascript function name instead of a quoted string. Serialized as such:
{"dataInit": functionName, "id": "myID"}
instead of
{"dataInit": "functionName", "id":"myID"}
