Return Data In HTML Pattern From Method / Webmethod?

Jul 19, 2010

In my asp.net website I need to return data obtained from DB by adding html tags to it from a server side method,just like a webmethod returns jsonified data. I am having trouble understanding if a webmethod can serve the purpose(i.e., htmlifying the data).If not how do I acheive it?

Can WebMethod Return An XmlDocument As Return Type

Jan 22, 2010

Can my WebMethod return an XmlDocument as return type?

When I try to consume the web service I'm still not getting XML. It appears as though a reference to the method is being returned rather than say a string containing XML.

<WebMethod()> _
Public Function CustomerSearch(ByVal lastName As String, ByVal firstName As String, ByVal companyName As String, ByVal city As String, ByVal state As String, ByVal email As String) As XmlDocument
' Create XML doc
Dim doc As XmlDocument = New XmlDocument()
' some more code
Return doc
End Function

Is It Correct Pattern To Return Different Views From MVC Controller

Jul 9, 2010

I have an application that has an public 'end user' mode and a 'back office' mode. Both 'modes' pretty much share the same controller logic but the user interfaces for these different 'modes' are radically different. Using the out of box default routing that you get when a project is created for the first time I have something like the following:

Controllers
HomeController.cs
Views
BackOffice
Index.aspx
Public
Index.aspx
Shared
BackOfficeSite.Master
PublicSite.Master
In my HomeController.cs I have logic that looks like this:
public ActionResult Index()
{
var devices = DeviceRepository.FindDevicesByCustomer(100);
if(IsBackOffice())
{
return View(@"~/Views/BackOffice/Index.aspx", devices);
}
return View(@"~/Views/Public/Index.aspx", devices);
}

Is this the correct way to be doing this or am I digging myself an anti-pattern hole? I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2.

WebMethod Return Values In JSON Format?

Jan 24, 2010

How to return values from Webmethod to the client in JSON format? There are two static int values that i want to return.Do I need to create new object with those 2 properties and return it?The GetStatus() method is called frequently and i don't like the idea of creating a special object each time just for json formatting...

[WebMethod]
public static int GetStatus()
{
int statusProcess,statusProcessTotal;
Status.Lock.EnterReadLock();
statusProcess=Status.Process; //Static field
statusProcessTotal=Status.ProcessTotal; //Static field
Status.Lock.ExitReadLock();
return ...
}
On client side I catch the return value in :
function OnSucceeded(result, userContext, methodName)
(PageMethods.GetStatus(OnSucceeded, OnFailed);)

AJAX :: Toolkit:AutoCompleteExtender Return From Webmethod ?

May 7, 2010

i have used AjaxToolkit:AutoCompleteExtender, which calls a web method to get string array. Everything was working fine as its populating all the data.But the issue arise when web method is returning value in a string array like

arr[0]=1-12-100

arr[1]=1-10-100

the value im getting in the AutoCompleteExtender is the subtract of the result like

arr[0]=-111

arr[1]=-109

Why is it treating it like numeric and doing calculation when the return type is actual an string. i think its has to do sth with serialize and deserialize thing

JQuery :: Simple Return Value From WebMethod From Ajax Function

Sep 22, 2010

I have an Ajax function called from JQuery that goes to a webservice to return a value. I need a SIMPLE example on how I can do this. I've been going nuts with serializing and every other aspect of this topic. I need to return either an ArrayList with ONE string field or a DataTable of some kind. Either way, I'm populating it into a DropDownList. I'm willing to consider alternatives to this idea. (Background info - I get a value from a textbox and I need to run it through a DB to get an associated value or set of values). I'm being really general so that someone can show a simple example.

AJAX :: Return Json Format From Page's Webmethod?

Jun 7, 2010

I have the following web method , no success on return a correct Json format.

[Code]....

GetAll() return list of type "Company" POCO classes.

The web method complaint type "Company" could not cast to object. However I could not just return the Company type because client side Json only accept its 2 properties -"CompanyName", "ID" and I want to keep it that way.

Of cause, I had tried create a CompanyDTO which only have those two properties, but same error - "Unable to cast object of type..."

How should I modify in my web method to make it able to return a list of partial "Company" type in Json format?

Passing JQuery Object And WebMethod Return Value To OnSuccess Function

Mar 31, 2010

I am calling a WebMethod from this code:

if($(this).attr("checked")) {
..
MyWebMethod(variable1, variable2, onSuccessFunction);
}

The MyWebMethod returns an integer, and I want to set $(this).attr("id") of the jQuery object above to the returned integer. Basically, I'm trying to do the equivalent of an MVC Ajax.ActionLink...AjaxOptions {UpdateTargetID =...} However, I can't figure out how to get both a reference to $(this) as well as the returned value. For example, if I do:

MyWebMethod(variable1, variable2, onSuccessFunction($(this)));

I can succesfully manipulate the jQuery object, but obviously it doesn't have the return value from the MyWebMethod. Alternatively, the first code block with a method signature of onSuccessFunction(returnValue) has the correct return value from MyWebMethod, but no concept of the jQuery object I'm looking for. Am I going about this all wrong?

WCF / ASMX :: Write Some XML Data After Web Method Return?

Jul 19, 2010

I am coding a classic .asmx web service. The method get data (as a string) from a server, then assign data to an object, then return that object. But I want to cache that object to a XML file for other request. It's because the data from server is not frequently change. Thus, after some minutes, I have to refresh the XML file. When I refresh XML file, I could write object to XML first, then return that object, but that approach maybe slowly.

How can I return the object for client first, then write this to XML file?

C# - Calling Method On Master Page From WebMethod

Aug 4, 2010

, imagine a Master page that implements IFooMaster with a method

ShowFancyMessagePopupTheBusinessCantLiveWithout(string message);

I am in a page that inherits this master page. Upon a checkbox being unchecekd, I want to show a message to the user that if they save it, they can't re-check the checkbox without some admin action.

I've been given feedback that I can't just use an alert('message'); in javascript because they want the consistent look of these messages.

Next, I tried to make an ajax call via PageMethods (as that's what everything else in this codebase uses) to show a message. My problem lies in this method being static.

[WebMethod]
public static void ShowSuperImportantMessage()
{
if(!checkboxICareAbout.Checked)
((IFooMaster)Master).ShowFancyMessagePopupTheBusinessCantLiveWithout("If you uncheck that thing, you can't recheck it.");
}

Since ShowSuperImportantMessage() is static, I can't access Master from within. The method on the master page looks more or less like this:

public void ShowFancyMessagePopupTheBusinessCantLiveWithout(string message)
{
lblGenericMessage.Text = message;
btnGenericMessageOK.Focus();
upGenericMessage.Update();
mpeGenericMessage.Show();
}
mpeGenericMessage is an ajaxtoolkit:ModalPopupExtender.

upGenericMessage is an update panel.The other 2 are obvious.

Can I do some jQuery kung-fu to show that stuff? I tried, but the solution complained that the controls I tried to refer to by ClientID didn't resolve since they were on the Master page.

quick edit: Before anyone tells me the architecture is a problem, or I shouldn't have put such a thing on a master page, or w/e...

I know the situation is not ideal, but I this is inherited code, and I can't drop it all and rewrite half of their web stack.

AJAX :: Write A Wrapper Method Around The WebMethod When Using PageMethods?

Jan 19, 2011

I am using ASP.net with WebMethods to show data to the customer and save data entered by the customer.

My current framework uses javascript to create an xml with all of the values of all the html elements in de "div" (or other element). This xml is converted to a string and send to the webserver using PageMethods.

When I receive this xml (as a string), I parse it with my own XmlDataParser which does some security checks.

I need to parse the xml to an XmlDataParser in every PageMethod I use, and I also need to catch different exceptions (like exceptions that are thrown when data is validated) to show them to the user (=> The reason why is explained in one of my previous posts: [URL]

I wonder if it is possible to write a wrapper around the WebMethod, so I can parse the xml to the XmlDataParser in this wrapper, and pass it on to the code behind, and process exceptions that occur in the code behind?
