Use HttpHandler To Create Canonical URLs For Classic ASP Pages?
Jul 19, 2010
I have a website that's in Classic ASP on a hosted server. I'd like to be able to create some "virtual" pages so I can specify google-friendly URLs that translate to ASPs [URL] this_is_the_help_page instead of [URL]admin/helpsubsystem/help.aspx?current_user etc As the server also supports ASP.NET - could I use an HTTP Handler to intercept these calls and do any necessary translations?

I've tried to implement two different solutions that use either and HttpModule or and HttpHandler to do URLRewriting for me. These work great on IIS 7 within my local development environment in Integrated and Classic modes. Currently the production server is running IIS 6.0 on a shared hosting environment. It appears that the request at least hits both the Module and Handler as the URL above redirect to the particular friendly url, but it doesn't redirect and hit hte Module or Handler again. Instead I get a 404 error for the friendly URL.

some automated tools to help in migrating classic ASP to ASP.NET I tried to install "ASP to ASP.NET 1.x Migration Assistant" from the link below but it encountered a problem during installation. Has anyone used it? Any other better tools? I know everything cannot be automated but I would imagine there are some tools out there. [URL]

We have a site and a logged in section of the site that all was written in classic asp. We are starting to convert the site pages to asp.net 3.5. We are starting with the easiest pages (text mainly) first then we will rewrite the web application part of the site.
My question is - Is it possible to run the new asp.net 3.5 pages with classic asp pages? Or will we need to rewrite everything before deploying?

I am trying to convert existing classic ASP webpages to ASP.NET. I dont have a lot of knowledge in the area. This is what i currently have. I use a Microsoft Access to pass data to tables in a Oracle Database. I then have .asp pages that pull data from the oracle tables. I just recently installed Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and i want to start converting my .asp pages to .aspx. I have never used Visual Studio before so I am stuck at the beginning of this process. Do i start by creating a new ASP.NET Web application? I know there are things i need to add to the Webconfig file too but i dont know exactly what.

I am making MSSQL stored procedure CLR calls from ASP pages. When an exception occurs, it is logged and then rethrown. In this scenario I need to be able to handle the exception (if possible) in the ASP page. Note that I cannot move away from classic ASP in this instance; I am stuck within a legacy system for this project. let me know if you know of a way to handle the exceptions in classic ASP.

In my VS2005 Standalone application, it is a tool kit to retrieve all the url from a particular website.
Ex:
http://www.mywebsite.com
and i want the all the url including querystring url's
like
1. http://www.mywebsite.com/search.aspx?id=10
2. http://www.mywebsite.com/itemsearch.aspx?id=10
so i know only the main url only and i would like to know all the url's name.
using c# code.

We've had a requirement from a client to move a site that is running on it's own domain to a subfolder of another app.
I've acheived this using ISAPI rewrite proxying.
However, there is one form that does a post back in the site. The generated url for the action from ASP.NET is "/sign-up.aspx?". This sends the postback to the root of the site.
I want to change this to "sign-up.aspx?" (no leading slash). This would be fine if I wasn't using Master pages as I could get a reference to the form and change it's action (this is .NET 3.5 SP1). I've tried to use the following code in my control to get a reference to the form but it doesn't seem to do anything. It finds the form but the action is not set to the value.
HtmlForm form = ControlLocator.FindControl<HtmlForm>(Page.Master.Master, "form1");
form.Action = "sign-up.aspx?";
This is in Page_Load and ControlLocator.FindControl is a port of this http://www.west-wind.com/Weblog/posts/5127.aspx

We have recently migrated one of our legacy websites (classic ASP) to ASP.Net 4.0. I have already created a RegisterRoutes() in Global.asax (as per [URL]). I am concerned about SEO rankings and link breakages with external sites linking to old site.
Ideally, I will like to: Load all the routes from an XML file within RegisterRoutes() --> As there are 100's of pages with no naming convention followed. We have already created mappings within an excel spread sheet which can easily be exported to XML.Action Permanent redirects from within RegisterRoutes() --> to avoid having landing page(s) performing Redirects like Response.RedirectPermanent() and Response.RedirectToRoutePermanent. Has anyone run into a similar situation? Is there a better way of handling this situation?

I have ASHX HTTPHandler which implements IRequiresSessionState. When I call this handler, and call aspx page of same application in another window, aspx page does not start processing until ashx page finishes processing. Even call to same ashx page from two different windows show that page which gets called first executes and then the next one.When I do not implement IRequiresSessionState, pages load asynchronously without waiting for other page to complete.

I have an MVC2 application, and HttpHandler Library. The library, to simplify, serves an image. The problem is that if I invoke this handler from the root page ( http://whatever/ ), everything works fine. If, however, I change the Global.asax, so the same page now has the address of http://whatever/controller/action - it doesn't work (ALT text comes out instead of image).I didn't write the handler library, but I have the code; so I put a breakpoint in ProcessRequest function of IHttpHandler implementation. For good situation the breakpoint gets triggered, but for bad case it isn't. So, I assume that the handler isn't invoked for non-root pages.

I'm working on a website with legacy Classic ASP pages (being converted to ASP.NET on an as needed basis) and new ASP.NET pages. Use of IIS 7 Integrated Pipeline has been very helpful with our configuration. For example, we were able to get forms authentication working auto-magically with the classic ASP pages simply by configuring the appropriate sections of the web.config file (i.e. no changes were required to the Classic ASP pages, for more info see this).
A colleague of mine believes that custom error pages, as specified in the web.config <customErrors> section, should also be auto-magically applied to the classic ASP pages, but for our website it only works for the ASP.NET pages. Nor have I been able to find any information describing the capability of applying custom error pages to Classic ASP with the IIS 7 integrated pipeline. Is it possible to apply custom error pages to Classic ASP pages per a web.config for an website running under IIS7 with integrated pipeline? If so, how?

I created a HttpHandler for downloading files from the server. It seems it is not handling anything...I put a breakpoint in the ProcessRequest, it never goes there.
public class DownloadHandler : IHttpHandler
{
public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context)
{
//download stuff and break point
}
}
It never stops there, as mentioned. I also registered it in the web.config.
<add verb="*" path="????" type="DownloadHandler" />
I am not sure about the path part of that entry. What do I have to enter there? I am downloading txt files, but the URL does not contain the filename, I somehow have to pass it to the handler. How would I do this? Session maybe?

i have a function that pulls URLs from various web resources. needless to say some are full valid URLS and some are relative as per the HTML of the page. below is my asp.net/ c# logic i derived for examining the URL and then generate a full usable URL from whats pulled from the site...
NOTE:
origianlurl is the full url of the first searched page, and relativeUrl is a url found within the searched page (it can be a full www.site.com or a /contactus.html)
private string ResolveRelativePaths(string relativeUrl, string originatingUrl)
{
if (relativeUrl.StartsWith("http") || relativeUrl.StartsWith("www"))
return relativeUrl;
if (relativeUrl.StartsWith("/"))
{
//get main url something.com
[code]...

Is it possible with ASP.NET Master Pages to create content pages dynamically?That is, I know we can create content dynamically, but the content pages themselves,can those be created programmatically? I want to give my users the ability to define new content pages (i.e. Categories: Sofas, Tables, Lamps, and add/delete as they see fit) through a management panel. The resulting content pages should have proper URL naming, so that they index properly.An example: http://www.example.com/products/Lamps/contentpage.aspx.Is there a demonstration of this somewhere I can view?

i recently installed IIS SEO toolkit on my Windows 7 desktop and tried to run a SEO report for my web site [URL], based on a multi-lingual (greek, english) implementation of asp.net mvc 1. One of the violations reported, has to do with the fact that in my global.asax file, i have the default values "el-GR", "Home" and "Index" for the locale code, controller and action route parameters correspondingly. This way, the [URL] and the [URL] are reported to be acceced from the same url from the SEO toolkit, like shown below:
The page with URL [URL] can also be accessed by using URL [URL].

I have create following rule on my local server to check canonical url
<rewrite>
<rules>
<rule name="Enforce canonical hostname" stopProcessing="true">
<match url="(.*)"/>
[Code]....
Its working but i have default.aspx page on which i have taken one link button and written event like this

I want to use canonical url's in my website. I read a few things about it on the internet, but i'm looking for a solution which will automatically generate the canonical for me runtime and add it in the html-code returned to the browser. I've already found an example on the internet using an attribute, but this is not what i'm looking for. Using an attribute i'm still deciding which page should get an canonical or not myself, I want every page to have one generated automatically. I take it there should be (existing) solutions? I'm struggling finding an good example to work on,

I was wondering it is possible to turn off the canonical hostname URL Rewrite rule from the URL Rewrite 2.0 IIS 7.5 Module.
I'm locally developing on a IIS 7.5. The setting of this URL Rewrite rule is set in the web.config.
This is how I deploy: I'm using Webdeploy to publish my web application. The new web.config transforms, which was introduced with VS 2010, is no option for me, because it is bugged:
[URL] and will not be fixed until the release of VS2010 SP1. I'm also not using web deployment projects anymore, because Webdeploy does not seem working with web deployment projects. As a result, I manually switch on the rewrite rule in the web.config before deploying.
If I now want to locally debug something, I manually need to turn off the rule.
Is there a solution like this pseudo-code?
if(Properties.Settings.TurnOffCanonicalHostNameWithLocalHost)
{
URLRewriteModule["CanonicalHostName"].Enabled = false;
}

When I tested web site on SEO Tools in IIS7 I get this SEO Error: The page contains multiple canonical formats. The page with URL "[URL]" can also be accessed by using URL "[URL]".Search engines identify unique pages by using URLs. When a single page can be accessed by using any one of multiple URLs, a search engine assumes that there are multiple unique pages. Use a single URL to reference a page to prevent dilution of page relevance. You can prevent dilution by following a standard URL format.
Recommended action: Pick a canonical URL format for your site and then ensure that all the links in your site follow that format. (For example, always use lowercase letters.) If an external link that points to your site does not use the canonical URL format, use permanent HTTP redirection to redirect site visitors and search engines to a canonical equivalent of that URL.
I tried to solve this by redirect page to a default.aspx. The problem is that HttpContext.Current.Request.Url.ToString(), always shows [URL] So I can't detect if url typed in browser is only [URL] or [URL] I know that that can be solved in IIS7, but I can't access it to do that in hosting server. Is any solution in ASP.NET to redirect to default page any time when in browser is typed only domain name?
