Variables - Using Of Module Private Member Instead Of Application Or Cache Object In Project
Sep 1, 2010
In an ASP.NET web app written in VB.NET, I need to load and store a large read-only hash table that is frequently accessed by the application. It only needs to be loaded once on application start, is never updated and can be accessed by any session at any time.
If I load the hash table into a private member in a (global) module, a lookup to it takes one 20th of the time compared to storing the hash table in the Application or Cache object. Is there any reason why I should not do this, or should Application or Cache always be used to store in-memory objects in an ASP.NET web application?

How do I store a variable or object application wide in ASP.net MVC. In regular ASP, you had the Application object, and in ASP.net too apparently.

In page behind classes I am using a private and shared object (list<client> or just client) to temporary hold data coming from database or class library. This object is used temporarily to catch data and than to return, pass to some function or binding acontrol. 1st: Can this approach harm any way ? I couldnt analyse it but a thought was using such shared variables may replace data in it ?2nd: Please comment also on using such variables in BLL (to hold data coming from database) where new object of BLL class will be made everytime.

We are using HttpRuntime.Cache API in an ASP.NET to cache data retrieved from a database.
For this particular application, our database queries feature a LOT of parameters, so our cache keys look something like this:
table=table1;param1=somevalue1;param2=somevalue2;param3=somevalue3;param4=somevalue4;param5=somevalue5;param6=somevalue6... etc...
we have so many parameters that the cache key is several hundred characters long. is there a limit to the length of these cache keys? Internally, it is using a dictionary, so theoretically the lookup time should be constant. However, I wonder if we have potential to run into some performance/memory problem.

We are writing a portal and like every portal we store html data in Db fro Modules. So I thought that I can cache each module in files. I use OnLoad event to check if there is a cache file for this Module, use that and else create cache file:
if (!IsPostBack)
{
string Path = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory + "CacheModules" + ModuleId + ".dat";
if (File.Exists(Path))
{
Controls.Clear();........

I hope I am posting into the right area... I want to know if you can access a session variable from a HTTP Module in IIS 7. Here is the scenario, I want to access the session values (i.e. User Object) from a HTTP Module. I have read oodles and tried many things but to no avail. I guess the application uses Forms authentication to authorize a logon to the site. I want to monitor the url that is submitted... RAWUrl property and if they are going to a certain page I want to grab their user object from THEIR session and validate them for access to that page. I want to use a httpmodule for this. The long and short of this is "Can I get access to session variables from the request from the httpmodule code behind? If I can, could you beso kind as to show me a working sample... I have tried many permutations on this using httpapplication, context and so forth and I can't seem to get access to session variables that would belong to the users request. it this possible?

I need to enable caching in my asp.net application, but I do not want to use the webserver's memory for holding cache objects. If I add the page directive for output caching will the page be stored in the asp.net cache object?

Im building a image gallery which reads file from disk, create thumbnails on the fly and present them to the user. This works good, except the processing takes a bit time.
I then decided to cache the processed images using the ASP .NET Application Cache. When a image is processed I add the byte[] stream to the cache. As far as I know this is beeing saved into the system memory. And this is working perfect, the loading of the page is much faster.
My question is if there are thousands of images which gets cached in the Application Cache, will that affect the server performance in any way?

Given an instance of a control SomeControl that is in a some file (could be a usercontrol/ascx, or an aspx) how can I get a reference to the class to which it belongs?
In a usercontrol, SomeControl.NamingContainer seems to be reliable.
In a page that inherits from a MasterPage, this will return a reference to the ContentPlaceHolder, not the actual class that defines the aspx. What I would want in that case is SomeControl.Page
Parent will return the parent control in the heirarchy so isn't much use.
Is there any method for getting this directly regardless of what kind of thing it is?

Be built an MVC application. Some of the pages require being under SSL encryption. Means the whole site need to be broken down to sections (http and https)The immediate solution that comes to my mind is creating two IIS sites (port 80 and 443) and break the application to two sites (public-http and private-https). Since the site is complex, breaking it into two applications will be huge work.What is the easiest way of doing this?Is there any link or article that explains the best practices doing this?

1.) Administrator

From the toolbox in Visual Studio 2008, I have dragged and dropped the create user wizard into the stage. I aim that a guest can register itself and automatically join the "member" role. Not the role "administrator". How can I do that?

I am writing an asp.net HTTP module which needs to read configuration data once from a local file (say config.xml stored in application root directory) and then based on configuration perform some processing on incoming requests.
Since there is no Application_Start/Application_init hooking available in Asp.NET modules, what would be the best way to handle the scenario. I am trying to avoid reading configuration file each time a request comes. Ideally, I want to read the config file when application starts.
I need to code this in http module only and do not want to use Global.asax

Can I synclock effectively on an object stored in the cache?Like:
SyncLock System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Cache("Some Object")
'do some stuff that is threadsafe on this cached object'
End SyncLock
Will this stop another thread from modifying that cached object?

I have a search page which generates a GridView of results based on the search terms entered by the user. One of the columns in GridView is called a DOI (Document Object Itentifier). This DOI is used to find academic papers through [URL] when a user enters a DOI string. What I would like to do is redirect the user to the relevant webpage when they have selected the DOI in the GridView, however, the url for this page is always different. In the page, I have formatted the form tag like so: [URL] and in my GridView, I have formatted the row that I wish to have hyperlinked like so:
<asp:ButtonField DataTextField="DOI" HeaderText="DOI" CommandName="d"/>
Then, in my C# codebehind, I have the following event which aims to redirect the user to the required page, based on the tag they have selected:
switch (e.CommandName)
{
case "d":
searchResult.Attributes.Add("onchange", "window.open [URL]
break;
}
I don't think this code above makes any difference though as the form tag is already specifying the redirected url, nor do I think this task can be done with a html <table> object, as it only accepts static data, rather than a result set generated from a database, which is what I'm doing. I have also looked at the following post as a guide to this type of problem but, taking account of what it said didn't allow me to solve this problem completely. GridView with DDL and selected value

I have following model class:
public class WebModel
{
public List<ArticleModel> Articles { get; set; }
}
public class ArticleModel
{
public int ID { get; set; }
public double ValueParam { get; set; }
}
Then I have the controller with the two actions:
[Authorize]
public ActionResult Index()
{
WebModel model = new WebModel();
ModelConverter.ConvertToModel(model, controller);
return View(model);
}
[Authorize]
[HttpPost]
[ValidateInput(false)]
public ActionResult Index(WebModel model, string saveButton)
{
ModelValidation.ValidateWebModel(model, ModelState);
if (ModelState.IsValid)
{
return RedirectToAction("Create", "Article");
}
ModelConverter.ConvertToModel(model, controller);
return View(model);
}
And this is my view:
<%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<Web.Models.WebModel>" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server">
<%var controller = Session["controller"] as Web.Code.SessionController; %>
<%Html.BeginForm(); %>
<div>
<table width="100%">
<%foreach (var article in Model.Articles)
{%>
<tr style="text-align: right">
<td>
<%:Html.DropDownListFor(m=>m.Articles.FirstOrDefault(f=>f.ID == article.ID).ID, new SelectList(controller.CurrentProdukt.Articles.AsEnumerable(), "ID", "Name", article.ID)) %>
</td>
<td>
<%:Html.TextBoxFor(m => m.Articles.FirstOrDefault(f => f.ID == article.ID).ValueParam)%>
</td>
</tr>
<%} %>
</table>
</div>
<table style="width: 100%">
<tr>
<td>
<input type="submit" name="saveButton" value="Save" />
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<%Html.EndForm(); %>
</asp:Content>
If I press the submit button, I get to the second action method in the controller (the one with the HttpPost attribute). In this action, the object model itself is not null, but the "Articles" list inside is null.

I'm trying create unit testing for an existing website project (not web application project). I cannot access my under test classes unless I use accessor. However, if I use accessor, I have problem to initiate an object with passing arguments. I only want to create unit tetsing for App_Code. After searching web, and I found that I'd better to create a web application project using my current existing website project. From solution explorer, add new project ->using existing website. My questions is: what impact will have for my current website to create the new project? Should I just convert my current website to web application? If do that, will it cuase problems on my website? I am new on asp.net, still learning..
