Vb.net - Web Service OneWay Definition Not Working
Apr 22, 2010
When I specify <SoapDocumentMethod(OneWay:=True)> on my webservice it doesn't seem to get called. If I remove that the webservice works properly. Also, everything works fine on the development machine just not on the server.
Here is my web method:
<SoapDocumentMethod(OneWay:=True)> _
<WebMethod()> _
Public Sub Write(ByVal processGroupId As Integer)
xslClass.xslHelper.writeDatabase(processGroupId)
End Sub
Here is my calling code:
Dim svc As New svcWriteFiles.WriteDatabaseService
svc.WriteAsync(e.CommandArgument)

I somehow managed to get the AjaxControlToolkit working from my network drive. I've since tried to add a textbox with auto-complete functionality as per the quick and easy tutorial below. The code works in Firefox and Google Chrome but not in IE8 (Not tried any others yet)
[URL]
I dont get an error or anything just the textbox appears and works as an ordinary textbox instead of one with auto-complete functionality.
what could be stopping this in the IE8 browser?

I've set up a textbox with autocomplete, it works fine when i run is in visual studio, but when I deploy it to iis, the list items just do not appear.I think it has something to do with the fact that I'm using clean routes (with asp.net 4 routing).

Back in the "old days" one would use the <asp:ScriptManager></asp:ScriptManager> and <asp:ServiceReferenc /> to allow for WCF Service integration into javascript on web forms. Example:

Trying to deploy a wcf rest service inside of an asp.net web application. Works wonderfully when deploying to test server in visual studio, however when i deploy to iis 6 I get nothing. It is as if my service is not there at all.
here is my web config under system.service model:
<serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" multipleSiteBindingsEnabled="true" />
and im registering a route in the global.cs
routes.Add(new ServiceRoute("Service", new WebServiceHostFactory3(), typeof(WcfJQueryService)));
my web service class is decorated with:
[AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Required)]
I am using windows authentication if that matters in this case.

I wrote a web service for a co-worker. The web service is in VB.NET, and it works fine for me. When I write a consumer and walk-through it, it returns me the correct data, and when I run the URL in a browser, the methods are exposed to me.
My co-worker wants to call this web service using JSON. He is debugging it in Firefox with Firebug. He gets a pop-up entitled "Authentication Required" and it says Enter username and password for <the URL> of the website (under which the folder of my webservice has been defined as an application in IIS), and there's a textbox for an id and password. Firebug says 401 unauthorized.
I am developer, not a SA, so I don't understand a lot of the hits I am getting when I google this error. I did change one thing in IIS, though. We have another web app on another server where we've employed the exact same model, and that web service works. So I am trying to compare the two. I changed Authentication so that Anonymous Authentication was Enabled and the others were Disabled. I was hopeful this would work, especially because Basic Authentication and Windows Authentication's Response Type were HTTP 401 Challenge, but that did not work, unless I need to restart something (do I?).

I made a simple WCF web-service inside an ASP.net website.
The web-service is hosted by IIS and works fine on localhost, ie when accessing for exemple to
[URL] I get the correct "Hello World" response as expected.
But accessing to it by my computer hostname [URL] gets me an error 404 response. This is particularly confusing as the remaining of the site (mainly aspx pages) is accessible without any problem from both ways.

I am creating an application that uses jQuery to make ajax calls to ASP.NET WCF Web Service. Everything works fine most of the time but eventually (about twice per week) the service stops working with the error below. The only solution is to clear the ASP.NET Temporary Files. The problem seems to start by the time the application pool recycles but not on each recycle. Please help as I'm trying to figure this out for weeks now!

I created a WCF data service and i've set the service config params like;
config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("PROFILEs", EntitySetRights.All);
config.SetEntitySetPageSize("*", 100);
So, in the returned xml feed, the link to goto next page is: <link rel="next" href="http://localhost:4760/oData.svc/PROFILEs?$skiptoken=4105" />
However, if I browse to that url I get an HTTP 404 error "The resource cannot be found."
Also, none of the URI querystrings seem to work.

I have a web service that was running on Server 2003, IIS6. The service required an SSL connection. The service expects 4 parameters; a User ID, Password, Record ID and the "type" of data requested (one of 5 options). The service validates the user then simply performs a select of the record ID from a table determined by the type specified. This service was up and running for a couple of years. I installed a couple of new servers a couple of months ago. The users that makes use of this service just tried it and couldn't get a response. I checked the server and I hadn't copied the service over. The service is located in a virtual directory under the primary web site.
For example, the site is: [URL] Service virtual directory is "GetITSData" The call to the service has been: [URL] param1, param2, param3, param4 and the service would return the appropriate data. I "assumed" that when I copied the actual contents of the directory over, that the service would then begin functioning again (since it was empty). All IIS snap-in manager items for the virtual directory match the previous settings on the old server (I still have that server available in my office). The main site requires SSL and uses forms authentication. When I create a dummy site in VS2008 and try to add a service reference, I get the following: There was an error downloading [URL]. The request failed with HTTP status 403: Forbidden. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: [URL]. The remote server returned an unexpected response: (405) Method Not Allowed. The remote server returned an error: (405) Method Not Allowed. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again.

I have a SqlMembershipProvider store with Roles enabled. This is configured and has the user "devtest" in the roles "xxUser" and "xxAdmin".
I also have a WCF service, which I want to authenticate and authorize against. My problem is that:
the authorisation is not happening, code just executes despite the policy attribute I don't get any identity or security context so do not know who is calling the service I need: to know which user is calling the
method some degree of rejecting users if permissions don't match (ideally this should be performed
within the RoleProvider/MembershipProvider/WCF but can do it myself if I have to) SSL in transport
I have my service contract set up thus:
[ServiceContract]
public interface ISupportService
{
[OperationContract]
[PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Role = "ThisRoleDoesNotExist")]
List<BaseInterestRate> GetAllBaseInterestRates();
}
the code is simple enough:
public class SupportService : ISupportService
{
public List<BaseInterestRate> GetAllBaseInterestRates()
{
OperationContext operationContext = OperationContext.Current;
ServiceSecurityContext serviceSecurityContext = ServiceSecurityContext.Current; // is always null
using (xxxEntities entities = new xxxEntities())
{
return new List<BaseInterestRate>(entities.BaseInterestRates);
}
}}
My service configuration is thus:
-->
<behaviors>
<serviceBehaviors>
<behavior name="SupportServiceBehavior">
<serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="false" httpsGetEnabled="true" />
<serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="false" />
<serviceAuthorization principalPermissionMode="UseAspNetRoles" roleProviderName="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" />
<serviceCredentials>
<userNameAuthentication userNamePasswordValidationMode="MembershipProvider"
membershipProviderName="SqlMembershipProvider" />
</serviceCredentials>
</behavior>
<behavior>
<serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true"/>
<serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="false"/>
</behavior>
</serviceBehaviors>
</behaviors>
<serviceHostingEnvironment multipleSiteBindingsEnabled="true" />
Having already configured the MembershipProvider:
<membership defaultProvider="SqlMembershipProvider" >
<providers>
<clear/>
<add name="SqlMembershipProvider"
connectionStringName="SqlMembershipProvider"
applicationName="xxx"
type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" />
</providers>
</membership>
<roleManager enabled="true">
<providers>
<clear />
<add connectionStringName="SqlMembershipProvider" applicationName="xxx"
name="AspNetSqlRoleProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider" />
<add applicationName="xxx" name="AspNetWindowsTokenRoleProvider
type="System.Web.Security.WindowsTokenRoleProvider" />
</providers>
</roleManager>
I have followed the instructions at these pages to the letter:
How to: Use the SQL Server Role Provider with Windows Authentication in WCF Calling from Windows Forms (MSDN)
How to: Create and Install Temporary Client Certificates in WCF During Development (MSDN)
How to: Use wsHttpBinding with Username Authentication and TransportWithMessageCredentials in WCF Calling from Windows Forms (MSDN)
Also quite useful found via SO: Use Asp.Net Membership provider with a WCF .svc service (Alkampfer's Place)
I would at lest expect an issue with certificates/transport/etc. to fail with exceptions, but I can debug right in and over the WCF call. I have no security context/ user context available to me and when I use a user not in the two mentioned roles (which I do in the code example above), I don't get "kicked out".
My client app is currently a Web App, but will ultimately also serve a Windows Forms app and Test suite. I'm currently using the ASP.NET WebDev server and am running .NET 4.0.
Am I missing something?

I have an ASMX Web Service set up to use the HTTP GET method. Simple methods which take basic String and Int parameters are working ok, and I can call MyService.asmx/MethodName?Param=Value and get a response back in XML.
However, when I have a method which has a nullable Int (i.e. int?), I get this error:
< Method Name > Web Service method name is not valid.
The error message is confusing, as the method does exist, just not in the GET scope. I presume this is because a nullable type is too complex to be passed via the URL, but I can't find any documentation or SO posts on this.
I appreciate that complex types like Lists or custom classes etc will not work using GET, but I would have assumed that a simple nullable int or nullable datetime could be handled natively, simply by detecting whether it was omitted from the URL. Guess it's not that simple!

I have a simple web service that isn't working with a standard jQuery call. The code is below. The jQuery will execute and succeed, but on debugging, the service argument is always null. I've had it separated as 4 string params in a json string and that didn't work either. I must be missing something on the config side, but I can tell what it is.

I have a fileupload control in the repeater control on my page. This page is almost six months old and the system was working fine. Suddenly, I started getting the error message : " 'FileUpload' does not contain a definition for 'HasFile' and no extension method 'HasFile' accepting a first argument of type 'FileUpload' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) " when i tried to access the page. While in debug mode, the page works fine but when I access directly , it throws the error above.

I'm having an irritating issue with Visual Studio's Go to Definition command in VS2005. I am developing web sites using vb in VS2005. My issue is that when I right-click on the name of a sub or function and then click on "Go to Definition" to see the actual source code of the Sub of Function, half of the time it takes me to the Sub/Function source code which is what I want it to do, and the other half of the time it takes me to the object browser instead which doesn't help me much.
It seems to work the way I want it to if the Sub/Function definition is in one of the App_Code modules. It seems to go to the Object Browser when the Sub/Function definition is in the *.aspx.vb pages MasterPage.Master.vb file. How can I change this so that it always goes directly to the Sub/Function source code? If I can't get this to work o.k., is there a way to see the source code from the Object Browser?
