Way To Determine If User Can Access Database Generated Page
Jan 11, 2010
I have Membership, Profile and Role providers setup for my .NET MVC website. I would like to say: this Role has access to that Page. How do I 'inject' this code to the RoleProvider? Or do I have to override it somehow? Any leads?(Roles are stored in the default ASP.NET SqlRoleProvider, Pages are stored in a seperate SQL database).

I need to check if an authenticated user is authorized to access a directory. I have done this before with a base class library method, I just cannot remember what class it's part of or what it's name was. I think the method was a static method and the class may have had the word Utility in it's name, but I just can't remember or find it on the net. BUT I KNOW I HAVE USED IT! The method definition was something like:
bool SomeTypeWithTheWordUtilityInTheNamePossibly.VerifyUserIsAuthorized(Principal user, string virtualPath)
I'm not using a roles provider in this application and I'm not planning to.

In ASP.NET, when you give a tag an ID it generates a unique HTML id for the element based on the control hierachy, ie.
<asp:Panel ID="test" runat="server">
...
</asp:Panel>
<!-- Becomes... -->
<div id="plc_lt_zoneContent_PagePlaceholder_PagePlaceholder_lt_test_test">
...
</div>
Is there some way of determining the generated id in the codebehind file? I need to generate some Javascript that uses the id.

I'm trying to implement my own Membership provider. I don't want to dig in very details but only high level logic. And first I don't understand is how can I use the class User generated from database in my CustomMembershipProvider project?
I thought I shouldn't generate class User in my project which uses my custom provider because it just don't need any users. It's only for login/logout functionality which implements Membership provider, not project that uses it.
Then I thought that I should pass Connection String to my Membership provider in order to make UserEntity somehow and use it inside Membership provider. I have two separate project for Membership provider and for any else project using Membership.
How could I create and use ADO.NET Entity in CustomMembershipProvider project for User table which located in database in other project?

<asp:HyperLink
ID="hyper1"
runat="server"
NavigateUrl='<%#string.Format("~/PLayer.aspx?ID={0}&Type={1}",Eval("arrange_by_id"),Eval("value"))%>'><%# Eval("value")%></asp:HyperLink>
I've implemented this string format in my NavigateUrl to pass a dynamic querystring depending on the clicked item!
but you see the first part in the string format where it says "~/PLayer.aspx" i want the user control to automatically change this part according to where it's placed!

Im working on a website where users can log into a members area, inside this area they will be able to communicate with other members.
In order to keep an accurate list of who is online and who is not, I would need to update a IsOnline field in my database when they log on and when they exit my website..
The login part is easy, but how can I determine if someone is leaving my website to go to another, or closing the browser.

I have inherited a database that is throwing me for a loop. Each user in this database has a "Password" and a "HashedPassword". I changed my password to "Testing" and discovered that the database stores the password like the following:
Original: "Testing"
Password Field: 211216058087052117197079019018007020147229039085161161
Hashed Password: 16e118ce2fd9e0cebda251af3a24fd6c5b6578ab
I was able to reverse engineer it to discover that the "Hashed Password" is generated using SHA1 encryption. My problem is, I can't figure out what is used for just the "Password Field". Can anyone give me any ideas of how to determine how the "Password Field" is generated? Can anyone look at this and tell me?

Often, out of sheer desperation I will end up enabling "Everyone" access on a folder that a web app is accessing (perhaps for file creation, reading, etc) because I can't figure which user account to enable access on.
Obviously, this is a very bad thing to do. Is there a way to determine what account IIS is using at that exact moment to access folders (and perhaps other resources like SQL Server, etc)?
Are there logs I can look at that will tell me? Or perhaps some other way? I usually use Windows Auth without impersonation. Not sure if that information is relevant.

I have implemented Forms authentication in an ASP.NET MVC 2 website
By using <%: Page.User.Identity.Name %> on the Site.Master page I can display the userid of the logged in user.
I would like to use this value and display other information about the user that is stored in a User table in a MsSQL database, like:
<%: GetFirstname(Page.User.Identity.Name) %>

I'm trying to access an SQL Server Express database out of an ASP.NET HTTP request handler. The handler is run under ASPNET account and uses "integrated security" in the SQL connection string and so I get an error message saying that login for ASPNET account failed and so I can't access the database. This seems to be a very common problem and most answers say "grant access to you database to user ASPNET".
I only have Visual Studio 2008 and I can't find how to change access permisssions for a database. Specifically I use Tools->Server Explorer and I can see all the tables in the database but can't find how to change access permissions. How do I change access permissions to my database using tools shipped within Visual Studio 2008?

I am trying to insert a record into a MySQL Table. I thought that the Insert methods returned the number of records that were successfully inserted. But that is not what I found. My code:
Code:
dim n as integer
n = taProject.InsertProject(pname, descr, idManager, startdate, tenddate, client, disable)
I get n = 0 even though the record is installed. How can I determine if the insert was successful or not?

In my asp page when press a button, a gridview will be populated with data from db, but beside the columns from database i need a new dynamic column in gridview, to contain only dropdownlist with items number from 0-n.
This far i managed to do it, with some research on internet (i used an intemerdiet datatable to apply ItemTemplate from GridViewTemplate class, and than merged it to datatable containg the result from query, so the gridview's datasource si the merge of this 2 datatables).
The issue is that i don't now how can i access the values selected by user in the dinamically dropdownlists, 'cause i have to save them in DB.
Attach is my GridViewTemplate class code, and .cs and .aspx code.
